as a male medical student, this actually doesn't bother me. women are certainly within their rights and comfort asking for a female gynecologist. first and foremost, patient care is about the concerns of the patient, and if a patient is not comfortable, medical care is significantly hindered.

on the other hand, i resent the idea that male medical students view gynecological exams less professionally than their female counterparts. trust me... the exam room is a far cry from the bedroom, and some of the things you see you wouldn't want to encounter recreationally anyway.

Funny. When female reporters want to enter male athletes' locker rooms, even if those athletes are uncomfortable with it, the clinching argument is that banning female reporters would deny women "equal employment opportunities". But when female patients are uncomfortable with male gynecologists, denying male gynecologists equal opportunity is irrelevant - female patients' comfort is all that matters. Heads women win, tails men lose.

I doubt that most male gynos went into it so they could have a peep show for a job...don't forget, a lot of their patients are people who have icky problems, and most of them probably don't look like super models and porn stars. The environment is clinical and professional rather than soft and romantic. It's just not that kind of a job!

I wouldn't want a male gyno, but for me, it's mostly because I'm not comfortable with letting a man other than my husband see my body. I doubt he'd be ogling or anything...it's just not something I want to do. Fortunately I have a female gyno and she's great.

I would like to thank the men that admit the OP is being oversensitive. These cases (for mens rights AND feminists) usually get blind agreement from their respected sexes, which weakens cases that really should be considered. Seriously, thank you for those that are fair when judging men and women's rights instead of jumping into defensiveness (applies to both).

I'm all for taking issue with assumptions about men like this, but...I don't think this is something to be worked up about. It seems reasonable. She wasn't claiming he was going to do or try something. Personally, I just can't believe someone can be entirely medical in a situation like that. As in, I don't want to believe it. It seems inhuman to the point of it being unsettling to me, though I'm not quite sure why.

Isn't there a common perception that a man insisting on a male doctor for that sort of thing is a mark of insecurity? That is the only thing about this whole topic which really bothers me, that I feel like a standard response to a man saying he only wanted a male doctor would be for him to be told to 'grow up' or that 'female doctors are just as capable as males'.

Why would you hate it? Some men and women have a definite preference about the gender of their doctor. No, logically it shouldn't matter, but it does, so what are you going to do. It is an accepted part of the profession.

It might make the patient comfortable in the short run to kick male doctors and nurses out of an examination, but in the long run it's going to make the patient UNcomfortable, because they're never going to get over their 'jitters' about having a male health care professional take care of them. And what happens in the future if there is an emergency and the only care provider is a member of the opposite sex?

People who come to a hospital - especially a teaching hospital - and tell the care staff they only want a female care provider should be told to get over themselves. That health care professional IS a professional, they are there to help the patient, and they should be told the same in no uncertain terms.

'Oh! I'm not comfortable, the nurse is a man!' What MERRY BULLSHIT. That person has made a career and lifelong committment to helping people, and putting up with all kinds of stink, grossness and issues gawd knows I wouldn't want to deal with. Get over yourselves.

This is fucking stupid. I kind of hope she gets cervical cancer and then the only doctor available is a man and he says he doesn't know how to treat her because he was evicted from the room when they were supposed to be learning about this stuff.
