If someone attacks you physically, it's your right to defend yourself with physical force. It's not your job to modulate the force of your response when said response is a single punch. I'd agree that it was over the top of he had knocked her down and then got on top of her and punched her face in some more. But no - this was a single punch, and was most probably reflexive. I would love to know which parents would advocate for their children to lash out violently because they cannot do damage. The reason we tell our kids not to hit others is because we don't want them to use violence as a means to solve their problems. It is dangerous and they can get hurt, especially if they attack someone bigger and stronger who retaliates.

Now, if we can teach our kids that common sense, and we do make judgements based on someone's strength about whether it's worth it to fight them, perhaps we should not excuse women when they attack people who are bigger and stronger.
