The stuttering as her brain short circuited made this all the more sweeter…

[–]dukunt 134 points135 points136 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"Th-Th-The, Th-Th-The, Th-Th... That's all, folks!"

[–]0xk1ng 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ha ha ha that's what I thought the judge was going to do.

[–]d_nijmegen 820 points821 points822 points 4 years ago (116 children) | Copy Link

2500 is a ridiculous amount of money, no middle class child costs that much. But since that's what is expected of men, I can only support equality in this case.

Pay up bitch

[–]AMonkeyAndALavaLamp 190 points191 points192 points 4 years ago (52 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, they mention children, but never the number, so at least it's two kids the judge is ruling on.

[–]d_nijmegen 142 points143 points144 points 4 years ago (51 children) | Copy Link

2500 is monthly wage for a lot of people.

[–]AMonkeyAndALavaLamp 181 points182 points183 points 4 years ago (41 children) | Copy Link

Maybe, but she claims she makes over 100k per year flipping houses.

[–]PilotProgramme 108 points109 points110 points 4 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

This is not a real courtroom or there would be Tax returns, and not so much sass and interruption. This has to be pure TV with actors.

[–]Jdsnut 48 points49 points50 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Ya but the actors have gotten better, the judge is a real judge.

[–]pursuitofleisure 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She's not a real judge, she's an attorney who plays a judge on YouTube. All her videos end in a long disclaimer stating that the people are actors and that the videos are for entertainment purposes.

[–]negroiso 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think most people who got called up for these types of shows got paid either way the case went. Like that was your appearance fee so long as you ham it up for the camera. Not sure on a child support case, but from what I’ve read, the proceedings aren’t too iron clad so if you wanted another trial or judge to take a loook I think you’d be able to with them help of any decent lawyer.

I could be totally wrong but, I only know from one single irl thread on here, and that’s nothing you should take as gospel because I’ve gotten a shit ton of things wrong on here.

[–]PilotProgramme 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’ve been in this exact situation and it’s nothing like this.

[–]AMonkeyAndALavaLamp 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You mean like the one with the short haired lady judge with all the memes? Jackie? Jenny?

[–]whatsupskip 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Juicy. Judge Juicy.

[–]frmrstrpperbgtpper 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Judge Judy? She was a family court judge.

[–]AMonkeyAndALavaLamp 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes, I googled it and it's her! I'm not from the US, so I didn't know the name, only seen the memes around here.

[–]frmrstrpperbgtpper 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She was a real NYC judge and a holy terror then. I heard about her BEFORE she became a TV star.

[–]bwick29 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I like her style though. Judges aren't supposed to make concessions and pander. The law is usually quite cut and dry and the judge's job is to interpret and apply that law to the case to make a judgement, nothing more. Judy did that with a tenacity little others have shown and THEN they picked her up for TV.

[–]bjj33 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Or it's just a mediator

[–]PilotProgramme 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, mediators don’t pretend to be the judge restrained by law.

[–]TorquoiseNoise 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

These shows are always mediations; they’re essentially a courtroom in that all parties sign waivers that prevent them from going to court and commits them to the mediator’s ruling.

Usually the producers end up paying the rulings, though. Like when Judge Judy says you owe $5,000 for recking a vehicle, the $5,000 is paid from the show’s budget.

[–]mwalker85 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

$150,000, to be exact.

[+]putin_vor -14 points-13 points-12 points 4 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

$100K after taxes is what, $70K, depending on the state.

$2500/mo is $30K/year. So almost half of her earnings would go towards child support. That's ridiculous. I have two children, they don't cost anywhere near that.

These laws are stupid.

[–]LinuxPenguin28 37 points38 points39 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Men have been getting hijacked like this for decades, welcome to the dance ladies aaaahahaha !

[–]putin_vor 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't laugh, as men still represent the majority of the rape by alimony / child support cases.

It's not about men vs women, it's about stupid laws. As long as the laws are stupid, people will abuse them.

[–]LinuxPenguin28 19 points20 points21 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Oh but thats where you're wrong my man, you see for decades it's been shut the fuck up and pay up on your responsibilities regardless if it leaves a man homeless, in poverty, and living in his car, because men are disposable in this society, but now that women are feeling the sting watch how quick the laws change, and when it does let's see if your "It's not about men vs. women" theory holds water.

[–]i_vonne_gut_wit_u 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It's true there's been a lopsided alimony allocation in favour of women but we can't forget the contextual factors that caused them.

Divorce falls under state jurisdiction and the first state to allow for no-fault divorces was California in the 70s. This isn't that far removed from a time where women weren't as active in the workforce so the settlements tended to be favorable to the wives because the husband was usually the sole breadwinner while the women became career housewives.

As more states adopted no-fault divorces and it became socially acceptable to be a divorcee, the legal precedents had already been set for large alimonies or settlements to the wives. Obviously some women and their lawyers are opportunists who will use it to their advantage, but cases like this, although anecdotal, confirm that we are moving towards a greater balance and equality.

Shit doesn't happen in a vacuum, and we do ourselves a disservice as a society when we talk about it as gendered behaviour when it's more about shitty people acting shitty and exploiting any advantage, including gender, for their benefit.... just because they're shitty people.

[–]LinuxPenguin28 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'll say it one more time, men have been treated as disposable for decades, by women, by divorce court, by any law enforcement agency and the military. I have absolutely no problem with women chewing on some of the dirt we've had thrown in our face for years. You say this not about gender when it is absolutely 100% about gender. I for one am tickled pink men are finally waking up from the brainwashing we've been programmed since birth to accept.

[–]mwalker85 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She told the judge she makes approximately $150,000, which is fair.

[–]shadowwolf151 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You say that, but up until a few weeks ago my roomate was paying $750 a month for 1 child because they were in the military when the ex wife decided to claim that they weren't paying any child support (they were actually paying $1k a month voluntarily when this was claimed) because she wanted to file for gov assistance, and the state she was in (Utah I think) took child support payments into consideration when determining what assistance would be given, so she claimed that my roommate didn't pay any child support. The state did their think and decided that $750 a month would be automatically deducted from my roommates pay (because military), a few years later when they left the military, and moved to a much lower paying job ($16 a hour), they were still required to pay the $750 a month in child support because the state wouldn't re-evaluate their earnings unless they paid like $5k to hire an attorney and pay a bunch of fees for the re-evaluation. And working 30-40 hrs a week at $16 an hour, that $750 was almost half of their monthly wages after taxes, add their rent at that time (they temporal were not my roommate for a few years) was $700 a month for their 1 bedroom apartment, that left them with less than $500 a month for all of their other expenses (thankfully their car was paid off). Furthermore, they ex kept moving around with their daughter, so they never get to see her, and now the ex has convinced the daughter that my roommate has abandoned her (because they decided to move across the country and live with me again so rent and stuff would be cheaper and they could afford the child support) so now the daughter refuses to speak with them and has asked for my roommate to give up their parental rights so the new boyfriend can adopt her.

Well that ended up being way longer than I originally thought. Sorry for the wall of txt. This whole situation kinda bothers me.

[–]sdp1981 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Child support is almost always half of the income of whoever's paying it. It's extremely unfair.

[–]doc1127 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You didn’t even watch the video but you’re outraged.

She told the judge $150,000.

[–]putin_vor -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I was addressing the comment that said $100K, I didn't make that up.

[–]doc1127 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So you didn’t watch the clip and made an ignorant comment based on a comment by someone else?

[–]putin_vor 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You didn't read the comment thread and made an ignorant comment based on a small part of it. That's the issue.

[–]doc1127 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You’re not smart enough to participate in grown up conversations.

And you’re definitely not worth interacting with. Go run along and find something else to make ignorant, ill informed comments on.

[+]PilotProgramme -7 points-6 points-5 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

If a person was making 100 K annual flipping houses, they would definitely be a lot better at hiding that income and keeping it off their tax return so they don’t have to pay support on it.

This lady does not flip houses, look at her nails and hair.

[–]Poster-001 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Or maybe she has a company that flips houses. Therfore she has workers that do the manual work.

[–]PilotProgramme -5 points-4 points-3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, If she had that, she would have closer to a million in income and know how to hide it. She would just hire a lawyer to do this so she is not revealed to all as a fool.

[–]istubbedallmymytoes 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So it's not at all possible she could have just treated herself for this appearance or another event lined up? Or can she not be a successful woman for other reasons...

[–]PilotProgramme -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Have you ever met a person who flips houses for a living? Ever met a female who’s in construction? They wear boots, overalls, no big hoop earrings.

This woman in real life is a welfare thot who just made a few hundred dollars to play a fool on the internet.

[–]istubbedallmymytoes 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well since it's already established that this is a skit with paid actors that are playing it up for the camera, you've only shown your character. Good job kid.

[–]Allbadhabitsarebad 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Did..... did you see that obese frog? She's not flipping anything but mattresses

[–]tibearius1123 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Depends where you’re at. When my wife and I had kids we went from a tiny $1600 apt to a $3000 apt. Now that we have a third we pay $3500.

Kids are extremely expensive because you can’t really properly care for the kids and be cheap. Like if it were just me I’d totally be down to go van life and live off as little as possible. Not possible to do that with kids.

[–]TheLousyZoot 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

this so much, absolutely, people without kids dont understand at all

[–]d_nijmegen 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I have a kid. But I'm European, I pay more tax but have more disposable income. Because I pay for less, a lot of kid stuff is state subsidized.

I pay around 700 dollars for a house that can comfortably give 3 adults a living space. That's 2 floors and a attic.

[–]TheLousyZoot 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes, but where do you live? What are living prices there? What are normal wages? Being european also doesnt say shit as different countries in europe have different taxes/rent/food price and more.

[–]d_nijmegen 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The Netherlands, I make a very average wage. I'm lucky to have bought a house at the lowest price after the crash. I pay less than most people on rent. All my living expenses are covered together with my wife. I pay about a third to half of my income on costs of living. That's from food, energy to Healthcare. I do fun stuff and investing with the rest.

I drive trucks. So hardly a millionaire. Life is good.

[–]TheLousyZoot 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like the Netherlands has their shit together! Props to you building a good life!

[–]MAROMODS 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Should’ve thought of that before having kids she can’t afford to take care of, womp womp.

[–]haydenfowler812 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah but obviously not her she said she makes 150k a year

[–]Getmetothebaboon 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More than.

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (37 children) | Copy Link

Yea, child support is such crap in this country. WHat the hell can that be spent on?

[–]whysobad123 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link

Doesn’t matter once its paid

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

It should be significantly reduced and receipts shown for everything bought for the child... and anything not spent carried over.

[–]whysobad123 24 points25 points26 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I don’t disagree with you, I’ve been on the paying end watching it get blown on bullshit, but The court only cares that you pay it. I also cover health insurance.

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Dude, that sucks so much.

Tell me, when they said they were going to put me on child support, you had to sign something, right? Did you refuse? It is a contract with a third party, right?

We should not be getting robbed like that.

[–]whysobad123 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Had to sign court docs, but some people sign their rights away "i did not". Also if you miss a single payment they can open a case with DCSE who then stay up in your shit to the elbow till you can get caught up or the kid turns 18 and support ends which ever comes first.

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Did you have a chance to sign rights away and avoid support? I know it's not a choice everywhere.

[–]whysobad123 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Signing rights away doesn't avoid support (at least in my state VA). Also support and custody are generally 2 different cases in the court system. This prevents people from holding visitation rights over someone's head if they can't or don't pay.

[–]PolukranosWordEater 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Lol in the "books" it says that, but in real life I've had obstacles trying to see my daughter and the court wholly endorsing punishing the father by ignoring certain issues

[–]DCver3[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In the states you absolutely can get an invoice on what the parent receiving the child support spends it on. My buddy in HS was tired of his Mom spending his fathers money on bullshit and he actually took his mom to court over it. After that the checks came straight to him and she had to pay him back for the money she spent frivolously.

Edit: this was in Michigan... laws may be different in other states.

[–]whysobad123 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fair enough, Virginia doesn’t care lol.

[–]PilotProgramme 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No it's based on income. And it's crazy that there are no tax returns being looked at. Makes me think this is all staged.

[–]Maxedout629 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Nah fuck that all these bitches out here getting way more

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Yea it's bullshit. I wouldn't pay unless I knew where it was all going.

[–]whysobad123 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Ya, doesn’t work that way as much as I would like to tell you it does. It’s totally skewed against men at the moment, the few women who get rekt on it want to cry foul and cry about it, but more than likely only because everyone around them was telling them don’t worry women always win….which obviously isn’t true, they are just babies about losing.

[–]PilotProgramme 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No, it’s all based on claimed income. Judges run those through a formula to calculate monthly support. It’s not skewed and it’s not complicated.

[–]whysobad123 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ya, until they quit their job then take you through the whole process while their income is 0 and you are working.

[–]terryducks 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

or vs versa ...

Dave Foley getting fucked by child support being based on his tv salary when he was working and not being adjusted when he doesn't have the tv show anymore.

[–]PilotProgramme 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Then you would lose your drivers license and other such penalties.

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

It would be illegal for them to do so. I'd file a lawsuit.

[–]PilotProgramme 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You’d file a lawsuit…. Against the state????

Good luck. 😂

As your attorney I advise you to get a vasectomy.

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Sexual mutilation is not a reproductive right, buddy.

And yes, you would have to do it against the state.

[–]whysobad123 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

nope thats where you're wrong, DCSE is who would do that, good luck fighting them....I'm not trying to shoot you down, just trying to give you perspective

[–]luminenkettu 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

this is awful, i'm in a low income family as an autistic person and the money i get from the govt is FAR more restricted.

[–]AreaCode312- 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Do you have children? Average daycare in my town is 1200 a month per child.

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

yea so half that is 600

[–]PilotProgramme 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Daycare, a house with enough rooms so kids are not strangling each other, braces, summer camp (thousands per week) and on and on.

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Daycare

Half needed

a house with enough rooms

Not something someone else should have to pay anything for. If a parent can't afford this, they shouldn't have the kids.

braces

Half

summer camp

Not necessary. Luxury.

and on and on.

Only necessary stuff, and only for the kid.

[–]PilotProgramme 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I’m getting the sense that you have no experience in family law. Do your best to stay out of family court. You will get eaten alive lol.

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know. :)

[–][deleted] 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Daycare? Needed.

Right, only half needs to be paid by each. That's what I said.

Summer camp? Kids need to socialize and have friends/learn new skills/hobbies

Summer camp is definitely a luxury.

Yes people shouldn't have kids they can't afford but accidents happen and abortion isn't always an option.

If abortion isn't always an option, the woman should be ready to make other decisions, otherwise why is she having sex?

Condoms and birth control fail as well.

Yup.. which is why she needs a better plan, and why the man isn't always willing to pay for something he didn't want.

[–]DeclutteringNewbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"summer camp"

Not necessary. Luxury.

The problem with summer is that kids are not in school.

And given that some summer camps are subsidized by government entities, non-profits, or evangelicals (depending on your location). For someone who works all the time, it's probably easier and cheaper to just send their kid to Jesus camp than paying for childcare and driving them from location to location every day.

But it’s highly inaccurate and not helping people understand how support payments calculations are made.

She is right that she’s only doing what the law allows her to do, but not being candid about the formula she is using and tax returns etc.

The Mother seems to have some mental problems and is lying about her income. Needs to hire a lawyer.

2500 is a ridiculous amount of money, no middle class child costs that much.

Not really. If you make $100k per year $2500 per month is $30k per year, which is less than 1/3 of your income and is tax deductible in some jurisdictions. If the other parent has to pay for daycare, that alone can cost over $1200 per month, not to mention food and clothing. Its no unreasonable at all.

[–]rapscallionx8 points 4 years ago* [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

i know a half dozen guys paying 2200 at least while making 60k. it is ridiculous. you know damn well these manipulators aren't paying for child care. they've got their mom or grandma watching the kids and they eat over there every day. "omg like not all of them". they all got some health care scam they're running, they stop working, have some other fucked up wigger dude move in with her and the kids. child support is a career and it's gullible shit stains like you that enable it. hopefully the system fucks you, would be sweet karma.

[–]DCver3[🍰] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well... let me tell you the other side bucko. Try living with your mom while your father doesn’t pay shit.

I didn’t get to see my Mom growing up because she had three jobs. I watched her struggle as my father partied and fucked around and refused to help his kids at all.

There are two sides you sniveling little bitch. Maybe fucking remember that before you make a blanket statement about something you obvious know nothing about.

women can - not fuck

women can - not fuck losers

women can - not fuck losers without a condom

women can - not fuck losers without birth control

women can - use plan B after fucking losers without a condom

women can - abort their loser babies

women can - give their loser babies up for adoption

women can - manipulate the courts into siphoning insane amounts of cash out of the pockets of the unfortunate men they trap

hell, women can even sometimes kill the newborn baby with their bare hands and face zero criminal charges.

here is a list of things, just off hand, that women can easily do to not end up in those situations. What can men do? Never have sex. The rest is completely out of their control. Your mom had untold resources, like all other single parasites... i mean moms. I'm sure if anyone had given your father options things would have been different.

[–]PuddingRnbowExtreme 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Which country are you in?

[–]MarcoASN2002 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

México, on average my family spends $650-700 mxn per day (around 35 dollars) plus $3000-$3500 mxn ($150-175 US) every month for other services and expenses ( that would be $1200-1400 US dollars a month). And we're not "poor", we're more like... mid-class. Unless there is an emergency or a "big buy" we never spend more than $1500 dollars a month. Oh and just to clarify I didn't mean life is cheaper here (its more like we earn less we pay less), I just wanted to point out the difference in the avg spendings of different places.

[–]mwalker85 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]a_different_piano 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that it costs between $500,000 and $1,500,000 to raise a child in a middle class lifestyle from birth to 18 years old, given that context, $2500 a month comes out to $540,000 after 18yrs.

In short $2500 a month seems reasonable because kids are fucking expensive.

[–]d_nijmegen 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's maybe true in the US. But children are as expensive as your pockets are deep.

We used to live in tents hunting and gathering. Not saying that's better. But it was good enough for us for thousands of years.

So why would you have to spend so much? If you mind your spending, education will be the most expensive. But again, the US is ridiculously expensive.

[–]a_different_piano 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

With a higher quality of living comes a higher cost of living, that's just part of the deal.

Problem is that wages in the US have been stagnant for a long time and the cost of living has roughly tripled since the 1970s so at some point the minimum wage needs to be raised or interest rates need to rise along side a reduction in stimulus. If things continue the way they are headed then at some point the entire US economy collapses under inflation and the longer it takes to get to that point the worse it will be when it finally does.

[–]2shack 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

A child costs an average of 20k a year until they are 18. Which is about 4K a month for that time.

[–]2shack 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Children

[–]Legal-Software 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure what you base that on, given that there is exactly zero information about their cost of living and average monthly outgoings on children (or even the number of children). If you happen to live in an expensive city, it's not uncommon to have a monthly rent of ~3000, school fees of ~1200 per child, half of that again for food + incidentals, and again for extracurricular activities. With that in mind, 2500 wouldn't even cover half of the expenses with 2-3 kids, provided they're maintaining a comparable quality of life, and that's definitely still well within the middle class.

I'd be a lot more on board with the idea of child support if every transaction was approved by the state as a necessary item for the child. Let's not forget that every woman will turn to their child and say "what has your father bought you" just to make him look bad in their eyes, even though he has literally bought them nearly everything. Or the mother will come at the father for all the little things like school activities, braces, Dr apt....bitch, that's what child support is for!!!

[–]cootslayers 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is this a real courtroom? It looks fake.

[–]SH0wMeUrTiTz 36 points37 points38 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

My children’s mom pays me child support. I have three kids with her and it gets garnished from her checks every month, some months are less than others but it’s getting paid.

Before I got divorced I was pretty one sided when it came to child support thinking that resources get wasted on the mother or just on bullshit in general. My view on that matter is differed greatly since. A lot of people, even irresponsible parents, don’t know the true cost of raising children. You may think it’s the absolute necessity food, clothing, shelter but it’s much more than that.

Now I don’t have a book or Jesus whispering on my ear on how to raise my three kids to be the most respectable, honest, hard working citizens of their communities but I do know that by providing them with experiences such as sports, play dates, educational activities/toys, even social events like plays, theaters, daycare, bday parties, they can get a head start on life becoming a decent person. It’s my belief that experiences shape you into who you are. The more positive experiences I can give my children while they are in their young learning stages they better off I will sleep and every cent of that child support money I get goes to everything I just mentioned. Ya it seems unnecessary but I do well for myself so my children don’t need necessities that most people would think about when it comes to the child support money so it goes to fulfilling their experiences. Alright thanks for listening.

I’m amazed at the cost of summer camp that’s not associated with a charity or church etc. Where I am it’s about $3000 per week, my sister pays $5000+ per week.

[–]otterlyclueless 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Changes every month?

It's typically a set amount set by income in the US.

If it was a percentage with some verifiable proof it was spent on the kids, I would have no issue with it.

It's only supposed to help pay for the kids, not completely pay for everything for them.

Edit: I understand the paying for experiences and other things like that. No issues with those (I agree with your assessment). I just want some record to show it is meant for something for the kid. Which is hard to enforce or prove in practice

[–]umquhilespecter 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are some concerns I have regarding child support in general, such as ultimate decision.

However, I will say that I am 100% for alternative ways to pay child support such as buying the food, clothes, and other necessities for them as a payment rather than raw cash. I definitely think that should be an appealable way to pay since I hear so many stories about children being neglected and the receiver of child support never actually uses any of it for the child's sake and it's heart breaking.

Granted, I know there is a ton of stuff that would need to be worked out to make it real if it were even able to be done but I definitely think there should at least be some way you can ensure the kid is actually receiving the support that you are trying to provide

[–]trolltaskforce 31 points32 points33 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don’t know about in general, but the system we have right now is trash. These huge child support payments are the cherry on top of the ridiculous sundae.

If it's a guy they'd take his entire paycheck. Why should women be any different.

Equality!

[–]Fluke_Thighwalker 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Both. Child support is a exorbitant amount in most cases and in a lot of cases it doesn't go towards child care. I'd be interested to see it shift to like a good stamp card deal where the money could only be spent on certain items.

[–]CazRaX 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Just make it so receipts need to be shown every few months. Some bookkeeping alone would help alone but I think both ideas would be better, a card usable only on certain things for kids and receipts to show they are actually using it all.

[–]doc1127 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you, the system is broken and needs to be fixed but receipts and financial audits are going to screw over the payer not the payee. In AZ child support payments are taken out of the payers pay check by the employer and paid to a third party company. That third party company then pays the payee. There is a monthly cost for this and it’s the payer not the payee who pays all fees. Hell the payer has to pay taxes on the money used as child support, the payee does not and doesn’t even include that money as income.

Showing receipts and having monthly financial audits would be extremely expensive and the payer is going to be stuck financing it.

I wish I had a solution.

[–]MrZimothy 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In some states it is literally just a form you fill out and formula based on the actual disparity of income (if any). No arguing. No bullshitting the judge or crocodile tears. It just gets filed.

[–]trolltaskforce 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Child support is based on the father’s/mother’s income difference. If the non-custodial parent makes millions of dollars a year, he has to pay hundreds of thousands. There’s no kid that needs that much for raising it.

[+]twjohnston -19 points-18 points-17 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Okay, so your position is actually “some child support is a scam”.

See how easy it is to not be obtuse?

[–]trolltaskforce 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

The child support law is a scam because it is the same law that applies to everyone. There’s also many other huge issues with it, such as no accountability to make sure the money is being used on the child, being used to pay for non biologically related kids, and many other issues.

[+]twjohnston -9 points-8 points-7 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

By that logic all laws are a scam.

So, because someone receives child support payments, they deserve no financial privacy? That’s a bit overreaching, don’t you think?

[–]trolltaskforce 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You right to financial privacy is against the best interest of the child. No, not every law is a scam, that’s a strawman.

[–]twjohnston -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

“The child support law is a scam because it is the same law that applies to everyone.”

All laws (theoretically) apply to everyone, therefore, by your logic, all laws are a scam. Correct me if I’ve missed something there.

It’s against the best interest of the child because…? You said so?

[–]goawayion 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I was unemployed after being overseas, ex wife got a massive promotion (about $65k yr bump) and my child support went up. She got a promotion and I owed her more money.

[–]twjohnston -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Okay, I’m sorry that happened to you. Sounds really shitty, and like you probably landed a sexist judge.

My mom was able to keep a roof over our heads because of child support my father paid. She made minimum wage, and worked as much overtime as her job would let her. It was still barely enough for basic needs before those payments.

[–]goawayion 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not the judge it’s the way child support is calculated. Most places I’ve lived the support owed is a percentage of each parent combined.

[–]twjohnston 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]PolukranosWordEater 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"The best interest" doctrine is such a crock of shit. It benefits no one that we even approach this issue in adversarial terms through a court system, and it's wrong to present it as a zero sum game, where for the kid to win we have to screw over the father. What's good for the child can also be good for the father by taking into the formula his feelings and circumstances, and not just favoring that of the mother. Having resentful bitter dads ran over by the system won't help him be in his kids life.

Rant over no one cares.

[–]Hi_Im_Ken_Adams 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If she is a realtor, then her income is not set. She may have made 150k last year, but that's no guarantee that she'll make the same this year or the next.

Also, those sales don't come at regular intervals. She may go several months without a sale and thus have no income coming in during that period.

However, the judge can only go by her past earnings so there's that. The woman didn't do a very good job of articulating her position.

[–]Legal-Software 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Many people who do non-salaried work face this issue, also with regards to pro rata tax rates and statutory withholdings. Typically this just means looking at what was declared for the previous tax year and projecting this for the next. That can be unfortunate if you had a really good year one year and a terrible one the next, particularly as you'd still have to wait until the end of the next before you can make any adjustments and get anything back. Remaining cashflow positive can be a real problem in these sorts of cases.

In this case, whatever the woman says is immaterial, she'd still be required to submit her previous tax filings in order for the court to calculate an amount. The fact a judge is randomly making a ruling with an amount derived from what the woman arbitrarily blurted out suggests that this isn't a real court and is probably just some stupid TV thing. In real life, these records would have been requested weeks to months in advance of an actual hearing.
