A few years ago a study came out (I can't find it right now but I may link it later if I can find it) that showed that the only way to arrive at the conclusion that there is a shortage of marriageable men is to compare ALL women to SOME men. It's fairly common to see huge swaths of men simply declared unfit because they have some trait, or lack some trait, while no such filter is applied to women. In cases where a filter is applied (a college degree is the most common) the data ignores that college is so tilted toward women that the ratio is around three-women-for-every-two-men... and women have outnumbered men in college since the 1980s. A fairly large percentage of women preemptively screen out most men based on height alone, even though screening for height makes about as much sense as screening for eye color.

But when we apply realistic criteria to women it quickly becomes clear that most women are not marriageable: bastard children, unsecured debt, high n-count, feminist worldviews, lack of domestic skills, lack of femininity, substance abuse, etc..

Men risk far more in marriage than women do, so women who want good husbands need to prove that they are going to be good wives, and past performance is the best way to predict future performance, and we have enough data to know what to look for in a single woman that indicates what she's likely to be like as a married woman.
