Was vaguely suicidal earlier this year (for some good goddamn reasons). Reached out to my doc. She referred me to a therapist. Out of 10 sessions, all but 2 were cancelled on me the day of. They knew I was in a dangerous place as I had told them in those words. Yah... Reach out. Fuuuuuuuuuck off

I think there is a male mental health crisis.

You think? How is this is shocking? We've spent half a decade labeling all men as violent, idiotic predators and now we're shocked that a large number of them are depressed? I understand that this woman is trying to help but she comes off as incredibly naive here.

I appreciate her immensely for speaking out but if we're ever going to fix this male mental health crisis, we have to address why it exists in the first place and the misandry ever-present in our society is a big part of it.

I lost my career due to being falsely accused by a woman who wanted my job and saw an easy path to it. I lost my identity and my dreams. Spiraled into depression. Was called weak by other women when I finally spoke about it. Suicidal thoughts ensued for a long time. I'm still there tbh

A big part of this problem is that men are raised now in an education system run and staffed by nearly all women. They are maintained by a health care system that is run and staffed by nearly all women. And their mental health is supposed to be an issue for psychologists that are nearly all women.

And these systems don't treat men as men. They treat men as aggressors, they treat men as misogynists, they treat men as defective women be default. THIS is the core of the issue at this point. You can't help a man's mental health by expecting him to respond like a woman...it just isn't going to work. We need to look at getting at least 50% male representation in these fields if we're going make any progress.

Many American male's in that age group have been circumcised against their will as tiny newborns. Go from there. It's a lifelong injury and many don't understand why they hurt inside. One of their first experiences in life caused them to dissociate and not trust their caregivers to protect them.

Suicide rates for men have been many times the rates for women for most of the last century, and men's mental health has been acknowledged in the public and academic literature to be inadequately addressed and in crisis for decades. How could any respectable unbiased professional be unaware of this until recently?

This woman sounds like she has been happily ignoring the mental health of men for most of her career (unfathomable given her profession), and has only become aware when she wants a man in her life and suddenly realises so many are emotionally damaged (although her language suggests she believes men to be emotionally incapable). Then, she expects these same men to trust that the same professionals who have been ignoring and miscontruing men's mental health?

Not happening. And not because men aren't seeking help. But because the help being offered is as incompetent and ignorant of men's experiences as this woman.

Let's teach an entire generation of little boys that they are born defective, that they carry a stain of original sin call Toxic Masculinity, and that they should feel collective shame for how any other man behaves.

Then lets express surprise when we see they grow up depressed, directionless, hopeless, and suicidal. We can all act like we have no fucking idea why they are killing themselves in record numbers.

I find it hard to believe many men said that. But it does very conveniently play into the feminist hate idea that men are broken women and can be fixed by becoming more like women.

The good thing is I am seeing a positive trend in professional women noticing and giving a shit about men’s mental health. We’re here, I promise. I’m trying to introduce it in my corporate environment because we have an entire branch of our company that is 98% men. I’m seeing that the guys that work for me really try to hold it together when we’re in stressful situations because they grew up in the “be a man about it” era. I want to change the view so everyone recognizes we’re all humans with valid feelings and emotions. I have both genders fighting me a bit on it. It’s frustrating.

Maybe I’m in a minority but I think this is bollocks. Men don’t need to talk about their emotions. I hate doing it, always have done and always will. You know what men need? To feel useful, to feel like they are contributing to society in some way.

Having a family and being the breadwinner was the way it was done for years, now that basically doesn’t exist, cost of living is so expensive you now need both parents to work, or men either come home to empty house with no family or their child being raised by another man.

If men have nothing to work for or don’t feel like they are useful or needed, then what’s the point?

As a pre-transitioning FtM, person, I am socially try to transition to be regonised as a guy, so since I started to act more masculine, I started to follow a rule that men can't cry, any empathy I try to push it down to become a "real man" I am a very emotional person myself, and I physically, and mentally tend to show my feelings, any person who would see me could understand how I feel right off the bat, without any explanation so since I try to start to show less feelings, friends around me started to think I got depression even though I try to mask it down. I just started to act more masculine, I think around women it's regonised as a depression or depressive episode. Which is sad because men go through it everyday.

Society definitely needs to to shift so that men are more comfortable seeking help and discussing their emotions. I too struggle to discuss aspects of my life with people and it is difficult to keep things locked up like that.

We still live in a society that pushes men to be stoic to the point of hurting themselves because society teaches men its more important for men to be tough than mentally healthy.

Stoicism is good in doses and an important part of masculinity. But when stoicism is pushed to extremes, that amazing masculine trait can become harmful. Or toxic.
