It's a common notion here and in other circles that women have higher standards because they always go for the top 20-30% of men. And dating apps and social media made it far more easier for them to do so. But the reason usually posited is that those men are simply more attractive.

I don't think this is the case. It's not that they can seek out more attractive men. It's that women now think they're more attractive than they are. Back in the day, although online avenues weren't available, women could still take the risk of being with an attractive man. Or a higher status man. Or a more powerful man. But many would not get constant ego boosts. If you were ugly, you were ugly. If you were mid, you didn't feel like you were enough for those kinds of men. Because there wouldn't be millions of simps hording up her DMs boosting her ego in the 70s, she would simply think she wasn't attractive enough. The greatest risk for a woman in dating is rejection. It's having your ego bruised. But when you now have your ego getting boosted every day by men not even in your same country, you start to think you're not just at but now above every guy's league, even many of the attractive ones!

A 5/10 is getting so much attention now that even an attractive man may not be enough. She not only wants him to be attractive but wants him to be powerful, have money, etc etc. as well. When she gets even pickier, men get even more desperate, and start boosting her ego even more. This snowball effect is honestly only going to get worse and unless there was some sort of massive social trend that shames men with real consequences for overhyping women all the time, this isn't going to stop any time soon.
