Considering how little women think of most men, I am positive that a society ruled by women would be more brutal and warlike than most ruled by men.

It's easier to send people you don't empathize with to their deaths.

I'm sorry but this doesn't 'prove' anything. All it proves is that of the little we have found in the archaeological record of these people, there seems to be a trend in giving women sophisticated burial rights.

There is a MASSIVE trend over the past few years in something called 'feminist' archaeology, where there are concerted efforts made by mostly feminist scholars to attempt to find women in the archaeological record.

The article gives no real academic references to show why these people were ruled by women at all, just they were buried while their male counterparts were not. We have no idea what happened to the males at all, we cannot presume to know their rituals, or men's place in society.

You should all read this very sceptically.

Well , to be honest , there's very little information there about much of anything.

It certainly seems very presumptive to suggest it was any sort of matriarchy for one thing.

Come to think of it , pretty much every example of "matriarchy" that's held up turns out to be more of a propaganda piece than an accurate reflection of the truth.

The fact that no tombs have been unearthed that contained men is not proof that this was a matriarchy. It could well be that they had an entirely different ritual for men that has yet to be discovered.

All I'm saying is that before anybody gloats , we should maybe hold out for some definitive evidence.

Doubtful. Wiki page says nothing about rule by women. Are there any actual examples of matriarchies? I wouldn't jump to conclusions based on what one guy says in this article.

I find it comforting and a little humorous to watch discoveries like this be interpreted by feminism. It is a core of feminist belief that societies have always been ruled and dominated by men and women had no power. Then whenever a discovery like this is made that shows the power women did carry in past civilizations, it is championed by feminism and women showing the strength and agency of women. It is shown in a light that uses them as unique, rare cases that are inspiring and supportive of the idea of female capability while also pointing out the patriarchy(exceptions proving the rule).

But each discovery is another chip in the patriarchy theory, the more of them there are, the more it shows just how much power men actually didn't have. At some point, it will hit a tipping point and patriarchy will be impossible to justify.
