I'm a new college student and I've noticed women are either scared of men or completely ignore them.

I was talking to a female friend and a student approached, she completely avoided making any social contact with me, not even a look, and despite me being closer to her, she asked my female friend for directions, completely ignoring me. This was odd, but then I started noticing a lot of social circles just showed absolutely no interest in befriend a male. To make a conversation is a pain, you break your back trying to carry a conversation and they show no interest the other way. If they have any question, they'd ask another girl on the other side of the table than ask any of the guys sitting beside her.

It just looks so surreal.

[–]dchq 41 points42 points43 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

maybe as a result of being taught in various contexts that men have nothing to offer in general except physical strength and that in all areas they are not to be trusted.

[+]PatriarchysConcubine -33 points-32 points-31 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

More likely it's the constant issue women encounter where even the most basic of interactions are misinterpreted and then they won't leave us alone.

[–]bottleblank 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Maybe if you were a little clearer about your intentions, we wouldn't have to just guess and take every little potential hint as an opportunity to try and make something out of any interaction.

The more you push men away, the more desperate and frustrated they will become, the more likely they are to just try anything, anywhere, anywhen, because they never get social satisfaction. The more men will lack social grace because they're never had the opportunity to learn how to properly interact with women because they've been blocked out from doing so. The more men will act out to get your attention, because you're not giving them any.

You're perpetuating this. You'll tell me I'm wrong, that it's men's fault, that you're sick of being approached, that you're scared every man is a violent attacker, but this could've all been solved if your (gender's) role in the dating game hadn't been "act in ways even an international spy would find 'a bit subtle' and make men do all the chasing". We're not and never have been mind-readers, we will never be mind-readers. All you had to do was play a slightly more active role in establishing potential relationships. That's all. Just say something, or do something, you didn't even have to walk up to random strangers and try your hand. You just had to say "Hey, I really enjoy being with you, could we be more together?".

[+]PatriarchysConcubine -15 points-14 points-13 points 3 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm absolutely not perpetuating this. I've always been clear about my intentions.

But it would also be bizarre if I pretended men were violent attackers. And I call out when other women do that.

In short, you're way off base here champ.

I can't control other women. You can't control other men. I was just offering insight as to why women may be reluctant to engage socially with men.

[–]bottleblank 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I was offering insight from the other side. We're even.

You seem to be aware that this is a problem, it doesn't matter if you don't personally do it, it's the environment we're forced to deal with as men. I don't expect you to "fix" other women, but you (women, generally) do need to understand the dynamics which reinforce this behaviour in men, which is ultimately going to affect your experiences too, even if you're not the one reinforcing it.

I see all too many comments saying "men just won't leave us alone" or "how do we know he's not violent", and judging us by the standards of the very worst humanity has to offer. If women were clearer in their intentions, that would be less of a problem, because men who might otherwise be forced to just guess at women who might be receptive, they might already be in relationships with women who were up-front about what they wanted.

Fewer lost men, more men with positive experiences less inclined to believe the worst about women, fewer men needing to throw themselves at you any opportunity they get, and you (hopefully) get the men you want because you chose them. That's a win for everyone.

[–]PatriarchysConcubine -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't disagree. Thank you for the explanation. I don't seem to have been reading you correctly the first time.

On that note it also bothers me when women pretend that in public a man must have express permission to smile at them or say hello. That is not the same as harassment. We live in a society and that is how people meet other people.

[–]bottleblank 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

On that note it also bothers me when women pretend that in public a man must have express permission to smile at them or say hello. That is not the same as harassment. We live in a society and that is how people meet other people.

I quite agree, and I would like to think that most women aren't that strict in their definitions of "harassment". It's difficult to get a handle on that when this stuff is mostly discussed online, because people tend to very quickly overreact or back up each others' insane off the charts views on things.

But, you're right, we do live in a society, and we can't just shut everyone else out because a few women think that approaching them for a conversation (or even an offer of a date) is offensive. It's not. It's offensive if they become offensive and/or abusive whilst doing so, but it's not offensive generally, as long as they're being polite and respectful. Until they show legitimately unpleasant behaviour, treat them with the same respect you'd treat a woman asking if you have the time.

[–]delocalelectron 29 points30 points31 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Don't be too hard on yourself, or them. The pressures are subtle. Having friends, especially those from childhood, threatens the female mission - leaves the door ajar to an alternative world where having a family wasn't necessarily the zenith of your ambitions.

[–]qemist 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Deep friendship bad, quid pro quo networking good.

The degree depends on her level of (in)security. Ironically the better "catch" she see you as the more she will want to isolate you.

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points73 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It asks why this got worse in the last couple of decades, and the answers include "socialization of young boys", "men share their feeling less than women", "traditional gender norms"

Are they claiming that modern men suffer more from traditional gender norms than they did in the '90s ?

[–]elebrin 36 points37 points38 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If anything, not conforming is more acceptable now than ever before. The trend is to be ever more wild and individualistic.

Personally, I find great comfort in the gender norm and in male archetypes. It's useful to me to see what strategies have been successful for men who lived long and successful lives in the past, and emulate those. What are the right things for me to do? Well, taking responsibility for my own life and that of my family, focusing on ensuring they have what they need through my labor, that sort of thing.

One thing they very much get wrong is their misunderstanding of stoicism. Stoicism isn't about not feeling emotions, it's about analyzing why you are feeling what you are feeling, and learning to control your responses to how you feel.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Stoicism isn't about not feeling emotions, it's about analyzing why you are feeling what you are feeling, and learning to control your responses to how you feel.

Yep. Spock takes it a bit to the extreme and ends up coming across as cold, but the storilines did a pretty good job showing it's not that he doesn't feel, but that he has mastery over his feelings.

As a boy, I saw men like this and didn't understand, so ended up stuffing things. Kinda worked at the surface, but when pushed too far, then I would explode since I hadn't ever really processed or had mastery over emotions. I wish we could find better ways to teach this to boys. That reminds me, I should talk to my boy about this again since it's been a while since the last time I explained it.

[–]somethingneet 38 points39 points40 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's insane to me that people can't realize that breaking gender norms is what's causing these issues. Gender norms for thee, but not for me.

[–][deleted] 81 points82 points83 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

They quite literally took all our spaces for bonding away. Any place that we had to be together away from the pressures of women has been systematically targeted and been either removed or forced to become ‘inclusive’.

This being Vox, I’m only surprised they didn’t make the article all about the negative effects of this on women. Also PMSL, they’re obsessed with this ‘socialisation’ bollocks aren’t they? They simply can’t accept that we may be different because then the floodgates open - if we’re inherently different they are then forced to concede that might be part of the difference in choices/outcomes.

It’s like talking to religious people. There’s no real point arguing - there are simply articles of faith.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It IS a religion to them

[–]hectorgarabit 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

While these articles are vaguely better than the average anti-male rant, there is still a core issue with them (I have see plenty lately, in mainstream media). Male psychology is always assessed from a women's point of view. It doesn't occur to these "scientists" that male don't show affection to their friends by other mean than saying "I love you"?

I agree with you when you said it would be opening the floodgate that gender differences are real. I think it is also deeper. People who write these articles are all women, a male feminists in academia (nearly women at this point). They have no idea how to relate with or understand men. And I don't think they really want to.

[–]Suddenly_Sisyphus42 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Never seems like it's about understanding, always seems to be about control.

Men's friendships where destroyed on purpose. To make us all good compliant money makers who won't organize or cause no problems.

[–]thepogopogo 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The rightists just want compliant feminised wage slaves, not free thinking masculine men in an equal and functioning society.

[–]Pantsyr 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I suspect the Left wants that also - compliant workers are a boon to both sides politically and serve established interests at the expense of innovation happiness and any prospect of advancing the species.

[–]ARedditorCalledQuest 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah. This isn't really a left v right thing so much as it is a class thing. The people with more money than god benefit from the rest of us fighting against each other so we end up being divided along gender lines, racial lines, political lines, anything other than economic lines because that would put most of us on the same side.

[–]crz8956 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Ah, Vox, that left-fem outlet? Let me guess, men are somehow blamed on having less friends, and it hurts women in some way, yes?

But, Vox aside, there is something going on with it. I am not ages old, but I can see that people spend far more time online than socializing. I think three major factors evolved.

Economics - more inflation, less money you effectively get -you need to work more -you have less free time.

Covid -self-explanatory. Isolation is always a trial to friendship like any "geographical" separation.

And, probably fear mongering, (not always unbased, alas), that lead to escapism - a desire to curl up in your personal safe space - wich leads to overuse of social networks, wich also robs you from real life interactions.

I sometimes envy old ladies of my house, that get to play cards every Friday on a bench in the yard. Old hags have a lot of time, and look quite happy just chilling out, gossiping and talking to each other. Because they do not need to work anymore.

[–]NutsLikeMelons 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s simpler than that. Everything boys want to do they are told no. They can’t even run in the playground any more. From the time they are children we are crippling the ability of our boys to grow and flourish.

[–]crz8956 -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

OP, if you want to understand where this article is coming from:

TL/DR: The left is strategicly regrouping for the midterms, because they fear loosing too much of the young male vote. See this study by the SPLC (ugh) which was the precursor for the above mentioned strategic shift:

https://web.archive.org/web/20220531182334/https://www.splcenter.org/news/2022/06/01/poll-finds-support-great-replacement-hard-right-ideas

[–]Huffers1010 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

One argument I have with that piece is the repeated claim - well, not even claim, statement - that the characteristics of men which make them lonely are entirely created by society. I suspect they are, to at least some extent, much as the stereotypical characteristics of women are also probably created by society to at least some extent, but that's certainly far from the whole story.

Another concern is that some of the things which make people (particularly men) lonely are discussed solely in a negative context. Self-reliance and stoicism is not intrinsically bad; everyone (men and women) needs some amount of it, and society as a whole needs some amount of it too. I've met a few people who could do with a bit more of both stoicism and self-reliance, particularly the more outspoken variety of hardline feminist who often seem very keen to blame the world for everything they don't like, and very reluctant to take any responsibility for their own lot in life.

Possibly what's causing this is the tendency, which is quite frankly a straightforward gender prejudice, to see stereotypically masculine, but not necessarily negative things, only in their negative light. There is no attempt, for instance, to examine the world's reaction to men's tendency to stoicism and independence separately from that man's own experience of it.

In short, it's begging the question in the formal sense: the article doesn't so much ask questions but repeatedly claim that masculine behaviour is bad because of the badness of masculine behaviour, with no attempt to caveat or understand the underlying realities. It's spectacularly lazy writing.

Man can bond through hobbies, fitness, passion and purpose.

Woman can only bond because they are the same altogether. Man are more individuals that's why less friends but less friends also means true friends and lifelong bonds.

Friendship of woman are often very fragile and don't last as long as male friendships.

[–]modernmanadvicecom 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is true. We, as human beings, are social creatures by nature. We need a community, a family, and a tribe to belong to. We are not wolves. Although some of us do genuinely enjoy our solitude and walk the Earth mostly alone, human connection is highly beneficial to our mental health.

Isolation can be detrimental and harmful to one's mental health. And unfortunately, men over their 30s are finding it harder and harder to create and maintain social groups.

However, this is generally true for people in general. We live in a highly individualistic society so genuine, unconditional, and deep human connection is rare.

If you look at the manifestos of most, if not all, mass shooters, they have completely isolated themselves to a point of disgust for humanity. The problem isn't gun control, it is mental health. And we, as a society, are poorly addressing it.

There us a lot of complaining about women in this thread but we also need to own our interactions with other men.

What are we doing to improve the friendships with other men in our lives?

Are we making an effort to call old friends or text a friend?

Are we creating an environment where it’s ok to befriend other men and be open about things?

It down to us to fix this!

Cartoon strip claims masculine norms are to blame for fewer friendships and worse health outcomes, also shows how male friendships have been declining over the past three decades...at the same time masculinity has been rejected by society so feminist capitalism can sell us more shit we don't need.

Men have fewer friends than ever, and it’s harming their health

Let's call The Mansophere out for its role in all of this. Entirely too many of us have been retreating into fantasy worlds of video games and YouTube videos, then when reading headlines like the ones in The OP and screeching "Look!!! This is another example of how feminism/Gynocentrism/Cultural Marxism has done us in!!! The fact that we ourselves aren't getting out from behind our keyboards, and spending more time meeting up in person out in reality isn't at least 50% responsible for the fact that we're have fewer friends than ever"

I'd believe it. I've had like 2-3 "best" friends at any given time in my life. Recently lost one to religion, too. :(

I used to have a small, but loyal friend group. We’d get together to play board-games, D&D eat junk food, drink beer and have a good time.

But.. that was years ago now. These days I drink alone and work to pass the time..

I'm a 40s male digital nomad, and I don't really have time just for my basics of work, gym, and personal study. I don't want or need any new friends, but am facing the nightmare of repeatedly ending up with what I don't know how else to describe but male stalkers. So sick and tired of it and don't understand how I need to change my body language to make it clear I will tolerate a 5 min chat but don't want to take things further. Fuck

Just wanted to mention this completely different angle to see if anyone can relate or extrapolate something from the data point
