This is so twisted. Poor guy. My dad used to get suspicious looks all the time when I was a kid and we’d stay in hotels and B&Bs when we went to gigs, he had to constantly reassure people that I was his daughter

Given the number of female teachers raping underage students, its hard to see this as anything else than sexist pigs, expressing the prejudices. It has nothing to do with good intentions, any more than calling the police on people of color, people with a disability or people of Islam.

Thanks to Travel Lodge for seeing every father as a child abuser! We already know the police are sexist pigs, and that's incurable.

This one conflicted me slightly, as I understand being proactive to combat sex crimes.

BUT, this line got me:

I’m in my 50s and have a 16 year old daughter. We were at a restaurant and she was in a mood because I wasn’t going to take her shopping after lunch. A female cop was eating at the table across from us. She questioned me then took my daughter to the other side of the restaurant and questioned her. She said it looked suspicious and I was too old to have a kid that age.

Honestly yeah this is one of my biggest fears when I'm asked to babysit underage family or friends alone. A man in this society is always harassed, always under suspicion. You can see by the stupid little insidious questions getting thrown your way of people trying to figure out if you're some predator, just because you're a man escorting a child on a trip or to a playground.

I reject any request for babysitting or traveling or sharing a hotel room underage people with now. I literally cannot travel alone with my own underage family members because people think I'm a predator for doing so.

It's systemic misandry. Like how is it that if we harass a black man on account of his race, it's illegal racial profiling, but harassing a man on account of his gender is not sex based profiling ?

The message for men is clear: Don't marry, don't have kids. We're hearing you. No marriage or kids. Let that population inverted pyramid come. We'll blame it on women's education and contraceptives or porn or something stupid like that. I'm just an evil man predator, what do i know.

Yes, I remember this, happened about five and a half years ago, I was working for Travelodge at the time, so am familiar with their safeguarding training and policies surrounding vulnerable adults, sex workers, children etc. I also read the internal memo that was sent round following this incident. A single man checking into a double room with a young girl falls within grounds for concern, obviously.

Evidently the front desk got it wrong, but acted within their training. Most Travelodge rooms are doubles, some have pull-out beds, some don't. It's not evident to the receptionist who booked or chose the room type, so obviously it may have been deliberate, in this case it appears that's all that was available.

The police were wrong to say that the man was suspected of being a paedophile, and the father was careless when he stated “One minute I was brushing my teeth, the next I was being told I was a paedophile.”

He wasn't told he was a paedophile, the front desk had their suspicion aroused and were obliged to exercise their duty of care. I actually did the same on a number of occasions, differing circumstances.

Two thoughts.

First, terrible as this was, it was five years ago. It's not a new story.

Second, they booked a double room, because it's all that was available. That is a bit weird. I wonder if the same thing would have happened if they'd got one with two beds in it. I suspect it probably would have, but honestly, I'm about that guy's age, and I wouldn't want to top-to-tail it with my hypothetical fourteen year old daughter. Presumably they were in a tight spot as regards finding somewhere to stay.

As a father of girls that experience happened to me too in a Las Vegas casino. Explained it to my 12 year old daughter and we all felt safer for protection being in place. Police was very professional. Better some discomfort than giving free range to pedos.
