To treat someone differently (either better or worse) on the basis of their sex – is sexism.

No. There is no ‘positive discrimination’, so stop your awkward somersaulting, and mental gymnastics, you look silly.

Character, ideas, talent, hard work, experience – these are the things that dictate competency; not gender, race, sexuality, or any other immutable characteristic.

Of course the basics of discrimination are all common sense, and widely accepted truth, when it’s comes to women and minorities.

Just not men.

When studies show that a female professor is twice as likely to be tenured as an equally qualified male professor, we shouldn’t woop, hi-five and pop the champagne– we should instead hunt down discrimination with the same rigour and resolve as always.

Or if there are nearly twice as many young women going to university as young men, perhaps we should start to wind down the women only scholarships, and consider introducing more for young men?

And if removing the name and gender from job applications leads to more men being hired, then so be it.

We cannot pick and choose what kinds of discrimination are acceptable, or types of sexism tolerated, for surely such a thing cuts both ways, and remains equally reprehensible.

So who will stay true to their belief in merit, equality and fairness?

Who will talk of to the men and boys being discriminated against?

Who really cares about equality, and who’s just pretending?

Well said. Also, Title IX applies both ways. Girls Who Code, etc. are discriminating against boys. It's also illegal (with Title IX) for schools to host such events.

Back in my day, we called this "benevolent sexism," and it was bad. But thanks to ~~denial~~ living in age where we're trying to equate having a vagina with having paraplegia, it's a good thing! Absolutely we should windup the things put in place to boost women in university. The reluctance to do so proves that they’re not truthful when they say that they’re just about equality. It also proves to me that discrimination in hiring will not end no matter what levels women reach in these positions.

I work in mining, if a woman applies she is guaranteed to be hired over all male applicants regardless of qualifications. The company does it because so few apply and they are so worried about getting sued for discrimination. Our work force is 99%male.

Out of 150employees in production we currently employ 2 women. Both women are related and both applied because they were uneducated single mothers and it pays $30 - $40 an hour.

I hate being in conversations where management talks about blatant favoritism of women in the hiring process.

This will have more traction if posted in some women/feminist-centric subs rather than here. Posting it here is preaching to the choir.

There we might see more arguments/justifications/mental gymnastics against this; and who knows, could also lead to some reasonable discussions.
