I think the world is moving to gender stereotypes being more fluid and I'm all for it.

It's not that gender stereotypes are wrong, the problem is when you make them mandatory. People should be able to chose however they please.

Not to trigger people but the world is going to become more and more gender fluid. Helpless princesses are going to go away deeper and deeper into the past, and it's up to an individual to to make themselves marketable because from this point on the interest in a traditional masculine/feminine archetype is only going to go down. Conservatives are trying to revive it but it will only last until a new break through - an artificial uterus, for example.

Gender roles are, at the end of the day, a generalization - they generally just happen to describe the majority of people.

Now, I do think there is a level of natural gender roles that most people engage in (or at least, want to engage in), but I find that the modern world faces the opposite problem of times before.

Historically, this concept of natural gender strengths/weaknesses was so heavily enforced that there was no space left for autonomy or any of the grey-ness in the middle, nowadays it feels like we’re trying to ditch the concept to the point where it frankly does become unnatural (one of many reasons why so many people are depressed nowadays - women are told to be more masculine and men are told to be more feminine, to where it all evens out in this grey boring middle)

I understand the trauma based response of wanting to ditch tradition all together, but some of it makes sense and some of it is built on what’s generally best for everyone - and i do believe if entirely left to their own devices, most people will do what feels best for them; which normally is what fits their mental, physical and emotional strengths - and we all know men and women do have a different set of strengths (ie. gender roles)

I think moving forward, we shouldn’t really try to enforce or propagate any kind of social or societal role, just the idea of being productive to the community around you - that way, most people will indeed naturally stumble upon their strengths, for most it will look like a gender role, but for some it will look very different - and both are fine long as we are working for the good of each other.

Also note; i’m not saying “gender roles” as in working a job, making money and taking control vs housecare, childcare, etc - i’m moreso referring to differences in characteristics; ie. generally, men are external action oriented; ergo competitive, assertive, stronger and more physically present - women are generally more internal thought oriented; empathetic, mentally and emotionally driven (which… we need both) and able to see the little intricacies.

The amount of people who stick to strict gender roles are probably the minority. Even for those of us who follow traditional dynamics, both partners tend to work/pay for things and do house stuff even if it skews one direction or the other.

Here’s my opinion on gender roles:

Most men are biologically prone to certain gender roles. For example testosterone means men take more risks, they’re stronger than women, they aren’t as calm and still as us and they crave adventure. This will predispose the majority of men to physical, dangerous lines of work or alternatively, work where a lot of stuff is at stake (for example Wall Street broker).

Most women are more biologically prone to certain gender roles. Oestrogen means that women are more caring and nurturing, that they’re not as physically strong, more cooperative, not willing to take a risk but to work in a team. This will predispose the majority of women to industries such as nursing, government, teaching.

Some people are outliers, and these won’t describe them even if they are men or women.

We need to therefore not exclude people from doing things outside of their gender’s normal role, even if most people do it that way. They deserve equal opportunities to shine and do what they would rather do, so we should provide equality under the law. Even if most people choose to do some things that match their gender’s biological role, there is no reason to restrict them from going outside it should they wish. It’s their right as long as it isn’t hurting anybody.

Generalities are not universal truths.

One related area I see this a lot is with hypergamy, men bring providers, women wanting to marry up, etc.

Just because this is an overall goal or trend in our society, doesn’t mean every woman marries up and conversely, the fact some women earn more than their husbands doesn’t prove society isn’t hypergamous.

I suspect many people appear to not understand this aren’t really nice, I think many are simply being disingenuous.

The roles themselves can be fluid, but if you don't fit the traditional masculine archetype you will be unsuccessful in dating. You be a stay at home Dad, but only if you're strong, confident and ambitious, otherwise women won't respect you. Otherwise you are just a beta buxx provider, women's sexual attraction isn't fluid it's based on their genetics.

Roles should ideally be based on knowledge, skill and ability. Ones gender shouldn't be an impediment to achieving a desired role.
