Bro are you living behind the moon? This some years old and the dangers are even bigger than you think. The debate was mostly about presidents geting faked, for example a fake declaration of war, which would be devasting if it would work.

There are already youtubers making videos using AI to imitate real people's voices. I watched a 1 5 hours video about Starfield where the content creator recreated Todd Hiward's and Elias Toufexis' voices (nad some others) for commentary.

The video was hilarious, but yeah it can open some frightening cans of worms.

The very thought that someone could do this and create "Fake" evidence is very frightening to say the least. All it would take is you falling out with someone and they could create this "Fake" evidence and take you to court over it and get a possible false conviction over it.

There is already research going on and I think there are already methods which could help with this. Basically the idea is to have a kind of signature that can be used to confirm the origin of the data. Obviously it's more complicated than that regarding Internet privacy and such but we are not completely doomed yet

In theory that's why evidence needs to have a paper trail. Evidence can be thrown out of court if it lacks

the proper chain of custody (e.g. proof of who owned it and stored it at what times)
the proper attribution (e.g. something else that verifies the person who took it and the time it was taken).

Now... the legal theory around sexual assault is that these things are hard to come by so many judges loosen the rules a bit... which is a problem because of deep fakes.

The creators need to imbed some kind of marker In the video or audio that can be found if you search for it kind of like they do with explosives if some one makes one the can take samples and see the markers which tells them where it's made and the lot number for tracing back to where its from and sold . It actually wouldn't be hard to do at all but then hackers could probably. Change it but if it's im did into a video how easy it would be to alter

AI voices are already happening. YouTube videos of celebrities voices used for AI. There's videos with Cristiano Ronaldo's voice and it's already duped people.

probably. If AI voices become extremely good, people would question a lot of these accusations or video evidence. But maybe there will be technology out there one day that can detect whether a video or recording is AI or not.

The technology has been out there a while. I don't know how good 'digital forensics' actually is, determining what is real or fake, but it's a job people already have. I do think though as the technology becomes more accessible, society is going to have to take better steps on handling it. The way western society is set up now, an ai fake 'confession' will be enough to get a man a life sentence/death where as a woman caught on tape admitting an accusation is false either won't be admissible in court/not enough evidence because it 'could be fake' even if forensic experts agree it's genuine.

I’m a web developer and already use this type of functionality. ElevenLabs has incredibly well-done voice cloning. I took a 12 second clip of my own voice and now it can say whatever I tell it to in my voice. Terrifying, honestly but incredible potential for good as well.

They're "only" evidence, not proof. And careful (and sometimes even casual) forensic examination can typically tell them apart ... not to mention other evidence may also be involved. Doesn't mean it doesn't complicate things, but always been the case that some evidence can be faked - or planted. In any case, still just "some evidence" - does not itself constitute proof, but something(s) also to be considered ... and carefully evaluated.

E.g. AI generated nude videos? Yeah, if that AI doesn't have actual nude photos/video of the person involved, it will get some details incorrect. AI can't guess the particular details of any given person's body that accurately without the actual data. E.g. birth marks, tattoos, scars, imperfections, wrinkles/creases, veins, asymmetries, variations in coloration, tone, other distinguishing marks, etc. E.g. why do you think questions such as, "So, circumcised, or uncircumcised?" are often put to accusers?. Not to mention digital telltale signs and evidence. Again, doesn't mean it'll always be trivial to separate out the Real McCoy from fabrication, but in all cases, just more evidence, not proof, and careful examination of the evidence - and other evidence, etc., will generally point towards the truth. Truth will be consistent and the pieces will all add up. Fabrications, lies, etc., generally start falling apart under close scrutiny and examination, or will tend to at least have major holes and significant/substantial mismatches ... a.k.a. reasonable doubt ... if not way beyond that.

Likewise for audio ... to the human ear may sound quite the same. But detailed forensic examination will often paint quite a different picture regarding how the recording came about and/or whether or not it's actual speaking voice of the person, or something assembled of their voice via AI or the like. Basic simplistic voice recognition may not be able to tell them apart, but there's much more that can be examined far beyond that.
