Lately, I've been watching media and documentaries about AI and virtual reality. The San Junipero episode of Black Mirror, had me thinking. I had this thought experiment about how realistic or convincing can AI possibly become in terms of a sentient romantic relationship. I'm not talking about sex dolls, but a fulfilled and immersive relationship where it doesn't feel like you're talking to a bunch of 1s and 0s. Are there any philosophical journals or ideas, on the possibility of speaking to an AI or virtual person who's convincing enough to feel human, or the best it could possibly be is some kind of uncanny valley nightmare? I'm curious. Cause I only see two possibilities:

  1. The AI or Virtual partner would be so agreeable and share too much in common that you'll get bored and see through the algorithm. Friction and difference in perception is what makes relationships healthy and interesting.
  2. The AI or Virtual partner would so good at reading your thoughts that it can psychologically access your subconscious, give you exactly what you want and need at any given situation, never breaking immersion by giving you an illusion of agency from it's thorough deep-learning mechanics of your entire personality and conscience disposition. Very similar to the end result of tech and social media companies implementing machine-learning algorithms to keep your attention.

I'm asking this because that could be the best solution to the intimacy problem so many people are facing. Like if you're a man struggling to find a relationship, here's this AI machine that can transport you into a simulated Ready, Set, Player One Wall-E-queue world where you can speak to NPCs who know EXACTLY the right things to say to you due to its deep-learning capabilities by giving you the convincing artificial rewards and friction that you can overcome OR you can talk to other users. It can keep undesirable men from becoming potential dangers to the world and also keep them relatively happy/fulfilled. Or is it an unreachable whacky sci-fi pipedream? Lol

What's are your thoughts on AI partners and simulated reality, from the perspective of both genders?
