You might wanna try to be more indirect in mall approaches, and if the vibe is good then switch in the middle of the conversation to being more direct. That will get you more under the radar and this won’t happen again.

No, I’d say don’t stop approaching. You might get lucky one day and meet the girl of your dreams (organically vs online dating & sliding into ppl’s dms). Just be more cautious. A friendly smile and “hi, how are you?” should do the trick. If she responds and continues talking, she may be interested. If the response is a quick “hi” and back to what she’s doing, that’s a cue to end the conversation. Ppl approach me at the grocery store, malls, airports, work, & public a lot. I briefly respond & I’ll simply let the person know I’m not interested, but I thank them as well for the effort (bc it’s hard as hell to put yourself out there & I get it). Just learn to read cues & be mindful. Good luck to you 🙂

You definitely shouldn’t let this fear stop you, however you should work on your calibration and maybe go for higher quality, not quantity of approaches. A lot of times negative reactions like this (although the one you described is extremely rare — which makes one, again, think something in the approach could have caused it) happened because of subtle stuff, like not making enough pauses, or talking too fast, or maybe not adding some polite pre-opener. When you don’t rush, do everything smart and on point, stuff like this shouldn’t happen — or if it does you should sense it a mile away and react very fast with some kind of apology to diffuse it. So you should view situations like this as lost lives in a video game, which make stakes higher and as a result must make you more skillful and less sloppy.
