Women rarely go to bars alone. You're not going to find some lone chick just sitting there, hands folded, staring at a wall dormantly waiting for you to talk to her. You're going to have to learn to open groups. Plus, if you only go after women who are alone, people around you might think you have predatory motives and are trying to pick off somebody "vulnerable."

Talk to women just for practicing. No intent to take their number. Or set up date. Just get comfortable to talk with them. Make friends. Talk to guys too

You need to learn how to approach groups. The fact that you are ugly is not so important. As long as you keep yourself in a good shape/haircut/style/body you should be ok. Moreover, I met ugly guys dressed like a construction workers who were able to pull girls at parties just by being charismatic and funny. Appearance is irreverent as long as you do not care about it.

What you need to do: 1. Be social. It is very suspicious for a man to be in a bar alone. When I go by myself, I receive those strange questions, why you are alone? Approach people in the club, say hi to everyone, nice to meet you, how you are doing, assume you know everyone even if you don’t! It creates social credibility. People see you are popular and are drown to you. 2. Have fun by yourself, dance, party, engage with other people. You first goal is to have fun, approach is the background task. You are messing around with people. Your mission is to have fun! Women is your dessert! 3. When approaching groups talk to everyone in the group! Group needs to accept you first before you hit on the girl in a group you like. Address her friends first. For example, when threatened with a police just smirk and say something like:”you should come with a warning label”wink wink, transfer it into a joke. Actually, calling the police is a good conversation starter, you can build on that a whole story, it is spiky and emotional. Always keep group engaged, but address sexual conversation and flirting to you target. You can flirt with everyone still, just make sure you game the girl you like. Remember, goal is find the girl you like, not be a clown a several hours for the whole group (done this mistake in the past.) 4. Once you are accepted within a group, you can use this leverage to approach other groups and merge/mix them, giving you access to more girls. When you become proficient with groups, you will notice, that in a big groups there are structures. Usually the girl you like will be a close friends only with 2-3 other women. So you do not need to game the whole bunch of people, just those 3. You can proceed to dancing, flirting, escalating with a girl you like eventually, getting her home, whatever you want. Remember, it is your job to make the group feel safe about giving you their friend. It is your job to provide any logistics. Use situational wingmans, use guys and girls from other groups.

I recommend you to study Mystery Method about group theory, MM was created for the group approach.

About signs of interest, just assume you have them. Do not bother to decode behavior. It is enough to have eye contact and approach.

I don't go to bars as much as I used to, but I did meet single women occasionally at the bar (I almost always went there with friends and chatted with strangers when the mood hit me). Women don't always want to meet up with a group and they don't always necessarily go there intending to be picked up. Sometimes they go there just to get out of the house, like a normal person.

If I see a cute girl and I try to hit on her, I sometimes strike out. Sometimes go further. You can't generalize every woman to act a certain way. I generally had more success by just chatting them up and being friendly, not necessarily having a goal to hit on them. As time went by and she got visibly more comfortable, I could escalate. This is harder when she's with a group, but in those cases you can also make friends with her group so that they are more comfortable with your talking to her.

If you aren't happy with your appearance, try working on yourself. Clean up a bit. Work out. Shave. Etc. Go out without the intention of picking up women. Talk to everyone at the bar, guys included. Make friends with the bartenders. Get some social proof and show that you aren't just there alone, but you're a generally friendly person who enjoys being out at the bar.

People can sense thirst when you try to pick up women, so work on how you present yourself/talk/etc.

This is a numbers game - and requires skill building, self-esteem building, exposure therapy. Yes maybe will have to endeavor or go through 100 or 500 rejections to get a girl to have food with you - hang out, but if can learn to approach them in a socially optimised way - with a solid strategy (will need strategy to give self confidence due to lack of experience) - that's a date you've been on.

For inner-self I'd recommend stoicism and focusing on what can vs can't control.

Remember that for it to work, a girl should be open to random pickup, which can be pretty rare, especially if you are not super-good looking male.

Don't get into hopeless seduction, listen to your emotions and make your approaches more casual and comfortable for you. You should not feel obliged at all to make the girl fall for you. Women can spot any negative emotion really quick.
