Nope. I still play games and (when i was single) picked up chicks...just have to learn what makes you happy.

Some people were filling a hole in their personal happiness with obsessions not hobbies. Those are the people you will find who stop doing what they use to do once they figure themselves out and start doing what the really want to do.

I'm a bit at opposite end, I normally have 0 or 1 free nights a week, and when I do I usually fill them with practicing hobbies and whatnot.

I haven't unboxed my TV in like a year and barely get any time playing video games (SC2 here), when I do find time it is really fun.

One of the biggest realizations I had that helped me get over my severe social anxiety was that much of my time spent on the computer/playing games wasn't actually enjoyable; I was doing it because of a lack of anything else to do (or rather, a fear of doing anything else). It was routine, it was comfortable, I didnt have to face rejection, I didn't have to face what I was really doing to myself. When I finally realized that, I unplugged my computer for a week.

That first time was eye opening. I realized how much of my time on the computer is spent in absolute boredom, or doing self destructive things (I've never REALLY needed to jerk off that fifth time). I had more free time that I knew what to do with, which absolutely helped me finally realize I had to come out of my shell, I had to spend time doing things I enjoyed rather than shitting around killing time for the sake of killing time.

I still get enjoyment from gaming, but I spend much less time playing because I don't let myself get bored and continue to play. I'm willing to stop.

I enjoy playing multiplayer games, like lol and SC2, but single player games have mostly lost their appeal to me. I still enjoy some games now and again, but for the most part my 900 euro pc is just standing there and playing music now. 900 euro music and reddit machine, with some games thrown in now and again? Totally worth it.

The thing is that video games are physically addicting. Not just "addicting" like people throw around a lot when describing television shows or their favorite foods. Leveling in WoW stimulates a huge dump of neurotransmitters. Basically you feel awesome. An intense and challenging fight in a FPS rocks your nerves with waves of adrenaline. Hell yeah it's addicting. Once you break the cycle, it's not as rewarding to play. It has to get it's hooks back in you. And I wonder, how many people blizzard has who have studied substance abuse and psychology because that's pretty much the goal of MMORPGs; to get their hooks into you.

Worse, I'd assume, like all things, a tolerance develops. I've done stints of non-stop, 14 hour days of gaming for weeks. By the end, I'm barely enjoying myself, I actually am playing worse than when I first started, and I walk around in a daze all the time. Maybe I just have addicting personality though.

Yeah. Video games are a huge part of my life, but honestly I have newer, better hobbies now. Oh yeah, and girls :D

HOLY FUCK YES!

I used to be a hardcore gamer. Played wow like 6 hours a day (3 years ago), got to gladiator status, bought a ridiculously expensive/powerful gaming machine, played tons of games.

Now since I've started going out and socializing more, I don't even really feel the need to play games that often. Like it's a fun thing to do for a bit if you're bored or tired, but I would always much rather go out and do stuff.

My gaming computer broke recently, and I didn't even give the slightest shit. If that was me 3 years ago, I would be huddled in a corner in fetal position, delirious from withdrawal.

I lost 9 years of my life to Final Fantasy XI. That's right, 9 years. I learned Japanese, SELF TAUGHT, to be able to play this game.

I discovered seddit at the start of summer-- dropped 75 lbs (Started this in March), and haven't looked back since.

Video games were the substitute for the exciting life I wished I had at the time.

I'm not really involved in seddit, but I have totally changed as a person in the since mid-2009 and loss of interest in video games has totally been one of many symptoms. I rarely watch TV for that matter either. I'd rather be doing something that yields some sort of good feeling about myself.

As a matter of fact right now I'm in Poland travelling (been here in Eastern Europe the last month) and it's my second to last night here. I'm going go out solo in about 20 minutes and try to meet one of the many banging-hot girls here. Wish me luck. :)

Exactly the same mate, I was playing the shit out of my pc for 5 years playing all the games all day everyday and just a month ago thinking how I will no-life DotA2 and how I will play it for the rest of my life and all that shit. Now, just a month later, whenever I think of games that are coming out or playing any pc games whatsoever I just wouldn't want to play them anymore and I don't even think I will purchase DotA2 (for which I had been waiting for like 2 years, being a huge DotA fan and all). Even though I have lots of spare time, it's not that I'm afraid that I will get hooked on a game or something, I just see things completely different and don't even want to play, I'd rather watch an inspiring movie or read a book. I don't know what got into me, I'm thinking of it as maturity maybe. I also discovered seddit about a month ago. Can this be it? I sincerely don't know... But I'm glad the way things turned out. Fuck, I even unsubscribed from /r/gaming, can you believe that shit?

Yep. The only time I really enjoy videogames now is if I'm playing with friends, or if I'm stoned. My two main computers broke down this year, and I didn't feel sad at all.

Now when I play videogames and I know that I could (and should) be doing something more productive, I get a feeling of self-loathing since I know I should be making good use of my time.

YES. I used to game a whole load. Now I just don't have the time, between Uni, keeping fit and going out with friends I'm just busy as hell. But I love it this way. (Though I still have occasional days where I disappear off the grid to nerd out. I still need them)

It's the big season of new releases and I haven't bought a single game, maybe I'll get Dark Souls, otherwise I'm waiting for Mass Effect 3.

I still enjoy a game or two. This year I played: Bioshock 2 Portal 2 Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

I didn't really pick up girls, and I wasn't that much of a gamer though. I'd rather get my dick wet than run around a virtual world anyday.

Not only do i find them boring now, i have completely lost taste for games at all, sold my xbox, sold all the games. It's pretty crazy. I used to be a huge online gamer.

I like plots so I don't do multi-player; I do however get sucked into the single player campaigns of various blockbuster games, pouring a lot of time into it until it's complete (1-2 weeks). So, it doesn't distract from normal life for long.

That hasn't changed; I finished Dragon Age 1+2 earlier in the year and got sucked in just as much as when I was younger. But, I'm in a long-term relationship now.

Back when I was just starting; sure we didn't do anything EXCEPT go out. We'd go to work/school, read about new techniques, meet up after dinner to go out until 1am, go home, write up field reports, go to bed, and start the whole thing over on end. We did that for a few years.

Then (if you're going for a quality girlfriend, anyway) that's over, and begins a huge depressive cycle. You've trained yourself to go out night after night and live on the excitement of meeting new girls and thinking on your feet. Now you're sitting at home with someone and she's looking bored and needs something to do.

And so most guys will dump the girl (or wait for the relationship to die naturally, helping it along a little) and begin the cycle again. That's a very dangerous, addictive cycle IMHO. It took me a long time to break out of it, at least.

Now I play less games, though it's likely because I have a lower tolerance for shit games as I grow older. I don't really feel the need to see through the 20 hours for a game I've bought where the first few hours have been shit.

The other part of the equation is that I was on the lookout for a hobby that could include my girlfriend. It started with a Wii, but it gets tiring fast. Then we started cooking together but began putting on a lot of weight; and even then it wasn't a complete solution for friends as I'm not so much the "having friends over for dinner" type as "going out to dinner with friends" type.

We also watch TV less; not that I have watched TV in the past decade or so but we do follow some shows when they come out on DVD/BR like Stargate, Lost, BSG, etc.

The other direction I've branched into is board games (NOT Monopoly). More social than a video game, less fatty than cooking, and can easily be brought out for just the two of us, or friends/family coming to visit. Some take different times to get going from short to long; Survive Atlantis, Castle Ravenloft, Arkham Horror. Meanwile you grab a bottle of beer or two each and a great time is had by all.

I use video games to keep myself busy, because whenever i get text from a girl, i always say I'll text that girl.... after this 30 min match or something. Someone also suggested when you're having women troubles, and you need your space, video games is a good way to relax and kill steam. Pretty sure its good for break ups too.

I still play, but less. Success with women is one reason, but just in general I have more constructive things to do and interests than I did back when I played a lot. I cancelled my TV service (couple hours of hulu a week is enough for me).

Nope. Just got back from 6 months in Europe a little while ago. Went out 5 nights a week and slept with a handful of women.

Started to miss gaming toward the end of my stay. I'm so glad to be back playing tf2. Turning into kind of a hermit. I sorta hate my friends here though which might have something to do with it.

I'm 22 btw.

I know what you mean- I went through the first thing my first semester of college. I was in a single and was having trouble meeting people, so I basically holed up and played BF2 whenever I wasn't in class... and by the start of second sememster, I realized I was unhappy, lonely, and fat. I made the decision to join the crew team, lost what I gained and then some, and now I'm out and about a lot more. Personally, I learned the most important thing in my life were other people, and substituting something else for them just seemed hollow. I realized that video games aren't real, and when that happened they quickly lost their allure.

I used to be addicted to video games. Now I hardly ever play. I have a Wii and a PS3 that I never turn on . l play World of Tanks every once in a while, but only for 15-30 minutes at a time and only when I'm having trouble falling asleep or whatever. I spend the majority of my free time salsa dancing now.

Yeah I was a long time gamer starting with the PS1 when I was a kid and now with 360/PC. But since a mate of mine started taking me out drinking I have pretty much knocked gaming on the head I'm just not that interested anymore. I have started talking to girls again in some capacity (Striking out like a champ) getting myself dressed and smelling like the god I am just got to lose a few pounds around the gamer belly. I am thinking about salsa lessons starting next week as I have some time off work.

I think so. I was pretty huge gamer in college and right after, but I stopped once I had a steady group of friends where I live now, and I hang out and go out with them a couple of times a week. Very occasionally, we play video games.

I don't miss it too much, but I still pick them up a couple of times a week. I'd say I used to game around 20 hours each week, and now I'm down to around 2-3 hours.

Not a long time gamer, but I did dabble in it. I agree, going out and meeting girls provides rewarding challenges, and is social. I did notice that I would get bored quickly after trying to play any game for any length of time. Also, going to the gym helps. It's like leveling up in real life.
