There have been cultures where the first-born son has had more value than the average woman in a family with assets, as he was chosen to keep the family line alive and got all the land and wealth of that family. But at the same time - all the sons born after the first were sent to war, to pillage, to explore or became monks, their life didn't matter, they were disposable.

For that to happen though, it needs some sort of stability and government structure, some sort of empire with borders, peasants would need to have surnames to begin with. In the end, with the amount of children people had, it still was a 80:20 kind of distribution, probably worse to be born the first son to inherit everything.

How does it imply value? Even in medieval times a name has only value in the moment it provides something, it's not valued by default; it's valued because you've provided something by your name.

I’ve seen it argued here that women have value for just existing while men are only valued for what they produce.

This is simply not true by any conceivable metric whatsoever.

As for your female infanticide, this is less universal across time and space than male objectification.

Besides, why kill a baby boy, when you can use him as a slave for decades, then kill him? That's nearly the entirety the the male experience across all cultures for most most of recorded human history.

Civilization and Governance need protection and enforce to uphold order and defense, and who's more likely to be put into that position? Men. Men are mostly valued for what they can do or willing to sacrifice for others.

What you're described in OP is an extremely old relic from a bygone era in human history, most people today especially in the west don't care about the gender of their future baby.

A boy is valued in the way a beast of burden is valued on a farm. A man's value to society is thus what he produces, and NOT what he is. Otherwise, sickly, crippled, unskilled, or handicapped boys wouldn't have had such high death rates across all of history.

Even today, the most ostracized, vilified, and berated demographic is boys and young men who are deemed "useless." Boys and young men are constantly berated and scolded on the media, politics, and culturally across the board for not doing anything other than playing video games all day and "contributing nothing to society." This same society that tells men and boys that we only exist as disposable utilities, that we only exist to serve, to work, and then die without complaining.

And then this same society clutches it's pearls in indignation when men collectively decide "Fuck That!" and then start checking out of this fucking system which throws us under the fucking bus as a matter of course.

And who do you think committed the vast majority of this female infanticide? It was China! And it was usually the mothers! This is because the male babies only worth was that of chattel, as the ones that will provide for the mother when she is older and cannot take care of herself, and in the meantime, they would be serving as labor mules for the state. Some "value" huh? The girls were the lucky ones in that deal. Exist only to work (and nothing more) or don't exist at all. Which do you think is the better fate?

There is no equivalent widespread male infanticide because men are perceived as more valuable.

The entire education system was rebuilt by women, for women and has resulted in women being more successful in school than they were when school focused on individual learning.

There are more scholarships available to women to attend college and due to this more women attend college.

The majority of the social safety net is geared towards women.

Women aren't sent to prison for the same amount of time as men. They are less likely to be convicted.

Women lobby through efforts like the #MeToo to not need to offer evidence in court, but to just be believed.

Women are granted rights to make someone a parent that men are not.

We put an incredible amount of effort into propping up women.

Who cares if a man can choose the last name? In a lot of societies that is changing anyway. Women are biologically more valuable than men, nature will always find a way to rectify that.

The question is what do you mean by "Valued?" Broadly speaking - Men are Utilities, Women are Objects. We know this because Men are valued less when they are not useful, and women are valued less because they are no longer fertile.

There aren't enough intact families for family legacy to be taken seriously anymore. Plenty of men either die destitute or on the street so I don't buy the legacy argument at all.

As for Female infanticide......you must be speaking from outside the US because girl infants have better survival statistics than boy infants.

This is not the case in modern Western countries. Carrying on the name has little meaning or value. Gendered infanticide is not practiced. Men and women have roughly equal earning potential.

this isnt true in the west, im sorry that the place you live at is like that, but men have absolutely no privilege over women in the west just for being men, and before any chronically online redditard feminincel brings up CEOS and Billionares and some Taylor's Swift song, those positions happen due to wealth and being part of an influential family, not because of the God given grace of being a man. Thats a rich privilege, not a man privilege, 99% of men absolutely have no privilege that women dont have, and certainly parents arent murdering their female babies in the west for some sort of legacy, not only that wouldnt be socially acceptable, it would lead to severe legal consequences, wherever you re getting that notion from, it is evident that is not from the west
