Can bigoted beliefs lead to being a predator?

My ex was pretty awful, and it took me a while to realize it. Looking back it seems more obvious. He was controlling, tracked my location, got angry if I talked to other guys, etc. A lot of that stuff is pretty normalizes though so I didn't realize it was fucked up.

I also slowly saw him turn into a bigot when he wasn't at first. There was definitely a correlation between his opinions getting shittier and him becoming more controlling in the relationship.

An acquaintance of mine recently got convicted for touching a 2 year old. That's the only predator I personally know. He was an outspoken feminist and LGBT rights activist. I would imagine people capable of being predators must also have some fucked up beliefs, but they often keep those hidden. I have noticed that people that go out of their way to virtue signal often turn out to be terrible, selfish people.

Belief systems that lead to dehumanization can logically lead to treating others as less than human. But no particular ideology is necessary to sexual predators since they can come from all different backgrounds. Without statistical analysis this is a very anecdotal discussion, and even if we had the stats in front of us correlation =/= causation.

For example, say (controlling for gender) we found men with bigoted beliefs against X were 50% more likely to be rapists. There’s a chicken/egg problem here. Did the beliefs lead them to predatory behavior or did something else (low empathy or other personality traits) cause both the behavior and the beliefs?

Absolutely. It’s dark, but just look at genocides. Dehumanization is the whole thing.

It’s a lot easier to do harm when you view someone as less-than or even sub-human.

I lived with a woman who worked in forensic psychology focussing on sex offenders for about 3-4 years. One thing that I learned was that the population is VERY diverse when it came to demographics. Some more common modes:

People who'd grown up with abuse. This leads to trauma, fixation, obsession. Controlling the sexual violence often gives them a sense of personal safety/gratification. This can be instilled pretty late in life. Hazing can affect this, for instance.

People with developmental disorders or neurological damage. This can commonly cause an inability to understand appropriate behaviour or impulse control issues, and also a whole gamut of more esoteric psych issues that have to do with sex.

People who use sex as violence. This group probably is the most of what you're talking about. People DO rape and sexually abuse those that they view as inhuman. Rape and sexual humiliation has been a part of war since prehistory. Hate-groups and bigots DO sexually abuse the groups they target. Sometimes that group is simply women/girls, or a class of women. Or a class of men/boys.

And these groups overlap in a ton of complicated ways, as you'd imagine. Another important factor is opportunity. Someone might have sexually-violent tendencies or predispositions like the ones above and never act on them because they aren't in a position to. Others will actively seek positions of power in order to commit sexual violence.

I hope this was a little helpful. It's a ridiculously complicated subject.

While I’m sure that those beliefs may trend with those behaviors, I don’t think they are determinative or even necessary for someone to commit those crimes, so I disagree with you.

A grapist probably doesn’t really care about the other person’s humanity or autonomy. Even though they may see the person as an autonomous human, they can still choose to harm them.

Pedophilia is definitely still worse because the person involved is still in developmental stages, thus harm done to them has extremely high leverage over their development. In other words, hurting a child hurts them more than hurting an adult, this is obvious

No it's usually a psychiatric disorder like pedophilia (which is the primary attraction to preprubescent children) or antisocial personality traits (psychopathic personality traits).

Pathological personality traits (ie dark triad) make it more likely that they will breach others rights and assault or rape people.

People do rape and murder for a few reasons but they usually have psychopathic traits. Sometimes the motive is for money and life insurance claima, sometimes for the thrill of killing, sometimes it is in the heat of the moment ie anger, sometimes for sadism, sometimes for paraphilic reasons (ie necrophilia, vorephilia). Dismembering the body and disposal of the body definitely requires a lot of psychopathy. High levels of psychopathy are strongly linked to the most extreme and violent forms of homicide, including those involving post-mortem dismemberment, mutilation, and sexual sadism

(I have a psych degree and studied criminal psychology units).

I think maybe everyone should just go the therapy. 🤷 I think for me justified killing is a means to an end but being a sexual predator isnt. Like if someone killed my child I would kill them. No hesitation. But it would partially be for revenge and partially be so they never hurt another person. I wouldnt assault them for it. That does nothing. They would still be able to hurt someone else so what would be the point? There isnt one. I dont support killing but I can understand it. Assault? Makes no sense.

I think your idea makes sense in some cases, but it may be giving bigotry too central a role. Some predators probably do dehumanize people, yeah, but others fully understand the other person’s autonomy and still choose to violate it anyway.

That seems less about belief systems and more about entitlement, selfishness, or lack of restraint. So I would say bigoted beliefs can sometimes support or justify predatory behavior, but they are not necessarily the root cause of it.
