A lot of articles about the current sexual dynamic point to the economy as a reason. No money, no dates. This is also my experience. I'm more interested in dates when I have disposable income. My un or under employed male friends have basically dropped out of the SMP.

The other thing is real wages haven't kept up with inflation and the cost of things like rent and cars have far exceeded it. A dollar goes for less. I have employment but it takes a lot to save up for anything special. The men and women I know who take exciting romantic trips are all badly in debt, to five or six figures. Nobody I know my age drives a new car.

Everyone talks about being a fun exciting guy but that shit takes time and money. I bought a gym membership mainly because it's the most efficient use of money per time spent entertainment wise. Partying with friends in your 20's is a logistical snarl when you all work weekends or unreasonable hours or have to take buisness trips to asia just having 3-4 people in one place can be a struggle, not counting the culture of flakiness that's developed.

We also used to have a robust public transit system, even in cities like Los Angeles, before that was gutted and cars became much more of a requirement to be able to live and work. Housing in cities in unbelievably expensive, even for smaller homes too. It definitely is the economy when cost of living (for similar goods) is so much higher, while real wages are stagnant.

I'm not necessarily saying we don't spend more either, but wages being stagnant is very well documented, and the increasing costs are for things where demand is not elastic (housing, food, healthcare, transportation). If demand was elastic for the stuff that showed increasing costs, sure, I'd be more critical of people's spending habits, but it's clear that the bigger issue is higher fixed costs for individuals and families.

Yea, that's really not that hard here then. It seems to me like it's always people from California and the east coast bitching about not being able to get by, while claiming they would never move to a fly over state.

I've lived in the Midwest most of my life. Most couples have 2 people working, but it's not uncommon for there to be on breadwinner. Housing, food, power, car insurance, etc is cheap. Most jobs are middle income, but that's enough to have a small-med house and a newer car.

If your willing to work you can get a decent job with a high school degree. I work with mostly high school grads making from 60-90k a year, and we can't keep workers because our competitors are paying more.

Plenty of white collar jobs too, most people drive into the city for those tho.

There are a few dead towns here and there. The people there usually just commute 30 mins because they refuse to move for some odd reason.

I don't even live in California, actually. Great place to live, really, but I found my home, lol. Good on you for finding a place, but we have an increasingly urbanizing population and have done nothing to address the costs that come with it. Housing is reasonable if you are ok with a 1.5-2 hour commute, but for most people, that trade-off is never worth it. We also have pitiful transit infrastructure in most major cities (Houston is especially bad I've hear, as is Dallas. LA gutted theirs 70 years ago. Seattle fucked itself by turning down funding in the 70s. NYCs infrastructure is aging heavily, etc.), and federal policies that favor personal vehicle ownership over public infrastructure development.

Really what needs to happen is more development of density and infrastructure in cities, because otherwise, everyone will be priced out no matter what. Rural areas are cheap, but that's because there is zero demand for people to move there, because there is far less work in those areas.

Not even kidding. If I owned a car and drove to work daily, my parking costs would be $5k a year. That is untenable even on a decent salary. I can't be paying 10% of my income for parking.

Discounting the issues of increasing urbanization also exacerbates the issue of homelessness, which is only increasing as people get priced out, and as homeless people congregate in cities, since that's where services for the homeless are mainly based.

The "wealth" gap is largely fueled by the top 0.1% building vast hordes of unicorn monies. It's not real money. It can never all be used. It just exists in computers or locked up in property that does nothing. These folks aren't Scrooge McDuck sitting on piles of gold. If they even tried to convert a tenth of their funny paper into hard cash, it would implode the paper value of their funny paper.

Where do you think that $9T in helicopter money ended up over the last decade? If that shit was still in the hands of the general citizenry, inflation would be booming.

It wasn't political at all. It is financial reality, regardless of who is doing it.

Because their cash income combined will not significantly affect the average of the cash income combined across the entire population. Plus you have to account for the fact that the cash income at the high tiers is taxed at a much, much higher rate.

It's a bit dated because I'm lazy, but the concept is the same:

The Pew Center’s analysis of IRS data showed that in 2014, people with an adjusted gross income, or AGI, above $250,000 paid 51.6% of all individual income taxes, even though they accounted for only 2.7% of all returns filed. These “wealthy” individuals paid an average tax rate (total taxes paid divided by cumulative AGI) of 25.7%.

By contrast, while people with adjusted gross incomes below $50,000 filed 62% of all individual returns in 2014, they paid only 5.7% of total taxes collected at an average tax rate of 4.3% per person.

And there are a fuckton more people in that bottom section than that top section.

I'm thinking of moving to other side of the country for a year or two after I graduate University next April since I've never explored the country. Will probably move back home afterwards since the economy is much bigger where I live now

I'll be going with about $8000 saved and no debt. Do you think I should look for a car to buy used from a private listing and get it transported there, or should I lease a vehicle for the 2 years from a dealership local to the otherbside of the country and not spend a big chunk of my savings on a car upfront. Or should I lease a vehicle for a few months so I have vehicle while I'm there and buy a car afterwards so I'm not rushing to buy a vehicle within a week of arrival? Assuming public transport is almost non existent there

This will be the first time living on my own financially and everything so I'm trying to plan and don't have the experience on how to arrange the car situation since I always borrowed my parents car.

There are many single men who value living in/owning a house in a safe neighborhood whilst having a stockpile of savings. However, there seems to be an even greater portion of single men who have little to no incentive to work towards such possessions because they are more satisfied with minimalistic lifestyles. If you're a man who values free time above all else, why work more hours if you can fund your basic necessities and hobbies by working part-time at a low-stress job whilst living in a poorer, more crime-ridden neighborhood? If you're a man who values safety from violence or status above all else, why not work more hours to fund a house in a safer, richer neighborhood?

u/NockerJoe said it best--that notions of security and comfort vary among individuals. There seems to be a trend of single men working less and earning less likely due (in part) to personal preferences for minimalism and free time, which gives them their own sense of security and comfort.

It's more about speaking to people 1 on 1 that's difficult, especially people I don't know at all. Presentations are a bit easier since you can practice what you want to say for those and are generally about something you know what to say for. It's talking to someone rather than talking with someone, a big difference.

But getting better does not put me in the "good" category whatsoever. Just because I'm a lot better than I used to be at social abilities does not mean I'm actually decent at them.

No Speech 101 wasn't required. I'm not even sure if that was a thing at my school.

I have no idea what a junior college is though. I'm still in school actually for an MBA actually.

But the good news is that my expenses are a lot lower than other people in similar situations. Got my Bachelor's at lightning speed in just 3 years, took some free Masters classes while I was doing that, and will have the MBA done in just one year of paid classes.

It's a bit bonkers how they charge me more if I take classes online though.
