I've been listening to interviews with this new pop singer, Princess Nokia, who lives near me. Shes a gender bending Wiccan, but something about her statements rub me the wrong way.

For example she invokes the idea of "blood and soil" constantly in the light of the new age/ wiccan movement, which kind of skeeves me out. She also stated that adults fed her weed at an indigenous ceremony when she was 11, which I think is probably not authentic. This reminds me of alt righters talking about their "viking roots" making them warriors.

Is it fucked up for me to use and relate to queer / young lesbian lingo if I'm a sexless, privileged, middle aged Republican homeowner who works in accounting and never faced that kind of oppression?

Can it be ironic like my appropriation of local slang found in my city, or is it more problematic, given that I am not actually gay at all whereas I do live in a city where slang is used?

Should I throw away the 'non binary' shtick and just do my thing without any labels because there are people who actually are that, and need that label, while I'm a voyeur fucking with bodybuilding supplements and mens jeans who doesn't have sex with women and doesn't face that level of harassment?

I don't really relate to videos I saw like "Paris Is Burning" and other footage of gay guys on the west side. My ex-friend lives in a project on the west side and he says the gay mafia is out to get him.

My friend (the propecia guy) and I kept hearing a song called BED by Jacques (Quavo's cousin) I don't agree with its message and it grinds my gears. I can't get rid of this horrible earworm that is eating my brain. It goes like:

So I was singing this song randomly and my roommate said he was walking around the town, and heard many people talking about these topics. I said: I knew it, neurotypicals are retarded and he said no, it's caused by people not attending college. As a result my friend and I are going to try to sing it at a pagan festival or try to make an AMV or GMV out of it.

I have been offline for the past few weeks. Actually, I have been irregular here for over two months now. I was trying to save a friend whom I have known since before grad school. During the last two months, I have visited him twice, stayed with him for a couple of weeks after taking time off from work.

Two weeks ago, he ended his life, much against the wishes of those of us who tried to pull him back from the brink.

He survived an initial brush with cancer early last year. In November last year, soon after his cancer came back, his wife filed for a divorce. This was granted this summer with the usual financial result. To add to his misery, she insisted that he come pick up his son on his weekends. He was unable to do that, or indeed much of anything because of the second round of treatment. The doctors had reason to be hopeful, but chemo is ugly.

In early September, I drove him to what turned out to be his final visit to his son. Unfortunately, I had to return to India to take care of a new product launch.

Our mutual friends and some distant relatives attended the funeral. His ex wife stayed away.

He wasn't brilliant. He was, however, a jovial and optimistic character, who was almost an elder brother to me during my first few years in grad school. Sadly, his inner light was not enough to save him.

His son will grow up with a myth, without really having known his Dad. He was an only child, so there is really no one beyond the so many lives he touched and improved, to mourn him.

We had very little in common beyond being engineers and nerds until his divorce. I think he had reconciled to his wife's betrayal, thanks to his participation in our support group. However, as a man, it was probably the humiliation of watching his son think of him as a weak diseased man that did him in. What he couldn't accept was that by surviving, he was already a hero to his son. I wish that we had been able to reach him. I hope that none of us plumb the depths of his darkness.

Rest in peace, my friend. You are in a better place now, but it wasn't yet your time.
