Yeah, the entire women were oppressed thing is kind of bogus considering everyone was oppressed and history has been about liberty being expanded and more people being unoppressed.

In the early 1900s a law was passed in the US that limited women to no more than 60 hours per week. Limited, think about that. We had to limit how much work women were doing outside the home.

They had a raw deal, so did men.

A lot of guys on here think that they're Atlas holding the world up, but truth is most of are just more weight on his shoulders. You're not going to be Atlas by being born with a penis. I would say there was no grand male conspiracy to oppress women. It kinda happened organically, but all women were oppressed whereas most but not all men were.

Domestic violence was common and not at all criminal. So any man could physically assault his wife at any time with virtually no legal or societal consequences.

Women could not vote until recently. Had no legal say in the power structure or laws in the country.

Women were routinely discriminated against in hiring, business loans, and everyplace else in the economic sector, and there was no legal recourse.

Many educational doors were completely shut off to women. They could be nurses or teachers, not much else.

Even though most people were oppressed patriarchal structures put women in an even more oppressed position. Peasants were oppressed by lords, but wifes were oppressed by their husbands.

Plus only men could become the head of the house and his first born son would inherit his wealth. Society was structured to keep as much power as possible in the hands of men and women were considered naturally inferior to them; in fact they were seen as defective in comparison to men.

It's like you've never opened a history book nor watched any documentary about human history. Women were the secondary sex throughout history until feminism came up with the radical notion that women are people too.

Women were seen as property in marriage and needed their husbands permission for everything. In Germany they only made it legal for women to work without their husbands permission in the 80s and marital rape was an accepted practice for most of our history. Domestic violence was made illegal in 1920, but society still turned a blind eye to it for a long time simply because it was just a man disciplining his property.

Let's take a look at some randomly chosen Bible quotes and how they portray the role of women

Exodus 20:17

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor

Timothy 2:12

I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.

Corinthians 14:34

Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.

Genesis 3:16

I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.

Ephesians 5:22

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

And well the Bible was the basis for Western Culture until atheism was invented by Richard Dawkins in 1941.

Traditional gender roles reinforce women's position in society as helpless children and tell them that they aren't fit for anything else than submitting to their husband, raising children, doing basic chores and looking pretty.

Have you ever heard TRP talk about women? That they are all illogical, emotional, hysterical children? Well that's just how women were seen all throughout western history, but back then it wasn't limited to some angry edgelords on the internet, but by society as a whole.

That's how they were oppressed. Not by individual people, but by the way society, marriage and the social life were structured. They were oppressed by having been born into strict oppressive gender roles.

Would you say that women in Saudi Arabia are oppressed? Well there you've got your answer because the role of women there isn't any better than it used to be throughout most of western culture

I prefer for my Dad (love you Dad!!) not to be the one to pick my husband and pay him a lump sum to take me off his hands. I prefer not to be the property of my husband on the off chance that he is insane and decides to beat and rape me, prevent me from seeing OUR children, imprison me somewhere in some out of the way place or whatever other crazy stuff he thinks is a good idea like what if he says I have to be a vegan our OUR children have to be scientologists or something? Hmmmm, no.

All that said, if he is paying for our living expenses then yes he should get more say in what and OUR children do.

I think its theoretical. Despite everyone being oppressed by kings and religion, an average man still had a chance to rise above his station through self determination, as opposed to a woman whose life was largely decided for her.

A woman's ability to move ahead was hinged on her marriage prospects and procreative abilities, whereas a man could technically strike out and earn his advancement no matter how poor and ignorant.

The oppression is the denial of self determination and self actualization.

A male serf won't achieve much on the maslow hierarchy of needs, but he'll probably receive rudimentary schooling (enough to read a religious text) and rudimentary political autonomy as opposed to a female serf who is viewed as little more than a brood mare and a work horse (or in the case in infertility, another useless mouth to feed).

You are correct, most men were/are pretty heavily oppressed by society.

Ways in which men traditionally oppressed women:

1) Household hierarchy. Although a lot of shit about a person's life is dictated by his ruler and his boss, the people at home are also pretty influential. If the household is set up so that men have nearly unlimited power over women, then men's daily experience will be of ruling the home and women's daily experience will be of subjugation to their husbands. A lot of men don't handle power very well, so they will end up trampling over their wives and sometimes abusing them. This is in fact what happened in the good 'ol days and it was such a widespread problem that it contributed significantly to the spread of feminism.

2) Legal reinforcement of gender inequities. The working-class man benefited from the fact that the people in charge were also men, because male leaders tended to use laws to reinforce existing inequities of power between the sexes and keep the "household hierarchy" intact. Besides any personal beliefs they had about the inferiority of women, it's easier to keep the people complacent when each man, as hard as he must work, at least gets to be dominant over somebody.

I saw a good argument, ironically, on a very liberal site that was discussing the insult "cuck" and how it became an insult from the alt-right.

Basically, not that long ago, certainly within the past 150 years, women were seen as being utterly incapable of controlling themselves sexually, and completely at the whim of their hormones and emotions. To call a man a cuckold was not an insult, but instead a commiseration, that he, through no fault of his own, found himself in unfortunate circumstances of not being able to watch and control his woman 24x7 it wasn't the man's fault, it just was expected of women, and their uncontrollable nature.

So yes, I do believe that it was common practice to "lock away" women and prevent them from having any contact with men that were not family in circumstances that would be beyond reproach. It was against social protocol, certainly in Jane Austin novels it was written about as if it were common knowledge and just everyday matter-of-fact the way of life. And not just for the uber rich, but pretty much all civilized society.

It wasn't even so much just the men, but mostly the women that would socially ostracize other women that had poor manners/lack of tact. Again, lots of literature from, not that long ago, evolutionarily speaking, supports that. From the Canterbury Tales, to Shakespeare, to Little Women it was just a fact of life and it is still a fact of life today, except now we pretend that women are the enlightened sex and somehow above their basic biological urges.
