Does Patriarchy still exist?

I don't think "Patriarchy" ever existed. What we've mostly had is a class-based hierarchy where men and women of an elite class dominate and control men and women of the lower classes. Certain families considered themselves "noble" or "high born" or whatever they wanted to call themselves.

When women talk about "patriarchy" and "glass ceilings," we're talking about women who are already in the elite class and far more privileged than 99% of the population already. But even that's still not good enough for them; they want to be in the top spot. The implication is that a woman CEO, President, General, etc. is the goal - yet it doesn't even matter to them who that woman is. Any woman will do in the top spot, just as long as it's a woman. That's the mentality at work here.

I asked my mom and older sister a decade ago about why they're not feminists and they both said they simply couldn't relate. At no point during their lives did they ever feel like they were oppressed victims of an evil Patriarchy designed to keep them down.

Patriarchy in the traditional sense (patrilineal, men dominate leadership positions, etc) describes pretty much every large-scale civilisation.

Women are simply inferior, that's why no female-dominated civilizations existed. Men are cursed to pursue women and compete for their attention. Women are cursed to bear children and give their life for that.

It's not that we have a system that forces patriarchy on us, it's that the system we have is dominated by men. As time moves on and the dinosaurs die off it gets more equal. Unfortunately, what keeps men in top positions is that it's already men in top positions.

For elected people it's more a case that there are fewer women with the experience to run for offices. That's a symptom of fewer women entering those fields.

But the only barriers women experience today are with prejudice and social attitudes, not with the system itself. So yeah it's not a strict patriarchy in how it's designed but it tends that way in practice.

In the modern West, women have every opportunity to do anything they want and elect any leader they want. For years now what has been shown is that women largely choose to let men be in charge of the show.

Given equal social, political and economics rights. . .and then some, there is simply no way that the US and Canada are the way they are unless that 51% of the population let it happen.

the dictionary definition of patriarchy is different from the feminist definition of it: feminism goes on great lenghts to claim patriarchy is a system that favors men at every level of society.
the dictionary definition can still be seen as valid since men are still at the head of families and government though not through legal enforcement, the feminist defition has never been valid to begin with.

I'm a feminist and in the west, I say largely no.

As for the first point, 1 of 3 houses are fatherless.

As for the second point, women are allowed to run for office but more women simply don't want to.

Let me clarify. There is a fine line (very fine line) between the "patriarchy" that women despise, and a regular relationships between men and women. Women will always have advantages over men and men will always have advantages over women. Currently, one could argue that our current society is plagued more by a "matriarchy" than it is by a "patriarchy".

Equality is a balance between a patriarchy and a matriarchy because men and women are only equal when neither "archy's" has more advantages than the other. In real life, when something affects hundreds of millions of people and when something is not statistical or empirical by nature, there is no such thing as a "whole number". Which means that we can never get rid of "patriarchy" any more than we can get rid of racism. We can just reduce it to the point where it no longer defines our society, which is what has happened to the "patriarchy". Therefore it no longer exists.

No. It's one of the reasons I'm not a feminist...I don't believe in Patriarchy or systemic sexism in the US. Not in modern times, anyway.

Yes, there are men and women who are sexist against women and I've encountered such people. They say or do idiotic things based on preconceptions or generalities that don't hold true for me as an individual, or for a lot of other females. But I don't live in a society that endorses this type of behavior on a cultural or societal level.

It's also worth noting that men aren't inherently better off in the US just because they are men. Someone can be like my lover (who is a cisgender, white, straight, middle-class, able-bodied, Christian male) and still have a sucky life that he can't get out of, while someone like me (transgender, white, bisexual, lower middle-class, lives with hand tremors that can affect my work, atheist female) can have a good life with little stress. Men aren't born with a silver spoon or any significant leg up compared to their female peers in my country. If anything, recent years have made it slightly more difficult to be male.

Absolutely not.

Men still excel in the working world more, resulting in more male leaders. Evidence shows that this is because of choices of women. Men are pressured by society, including women, to put more effort into their occupations. They work more hours, choose dirty, dangerous and isolating jobs to earn more. Women have more freedom and choose to sacrifice less for their occupation or not work at all. As a result, men rise to the top more often. In case of politics, research shows that women are as likely to win if they run, but women choose to run less frequently. So there are more male leaders because women choose to have a more balanced life. How can one call that 'Patriarchy'?

Women hold much of the real power in society. Women are 54% of the electorate, control most discretionary spending and have more power over their personal lives and their reproductive choices.

absolutely. men hold the vast majority of power in the west and the rest of the world. most of the world still sees women as the submissive sex. our laws regarding women's health are still determined by old white dudes. the male gender is considered the "norm" in most places of society.

Yes. Maybe not legally enforced like it was historically, but it's still entrenched in societal attitudes and tradition.

A lot of people don't see oppression because we grew up in this society. What happens in it is the norm to us. Oppressed people might even like the way things are because it's how things have always been. We grow up accepting that women and children take men's names after marriage. We grow up seeing men in high power positions or in certain professions, so we tend to associate those positions with men. Women do have the same rights as men now, but it's going to take a while for society to follow.
