I think what gets me is the fact that commenters are infinitely meaner to female posters than male posters there, and they get oddly specific like they've been saving up their bile for a long time.

edit: I often wonder if the women posting on that sub do so because pressured by their bf. I don't want to excuse women's behavior, just saying I can see some dude going "bet you don't have the guts". Honestly a woman doesn't even need to post her picture online to be called a fat whore.

It definitely gives off the impression of Cool Girl nonsense. I love standup comedy and even have friends who are professional standup comedians so I have a robust sense of humour but the whole roast me concept is desperate and attention seeking

I randomly came across that thread as well. I've noticed that it is both men and women that are wanting to be "roasted". The women that are posting appear to be very attractive, so I'm wondering if it is an attention thing. Regardless of the motivation, I personally believe it's appalling for anyone who participates on either end. I think wanting people to insult you for any reason is heartbreaking and I feel that those who obtain pleasure out of making fun of others is very disturbing as well. It's all in bad taste.

It’s women’s threads that get the most attention because that sub is mostly made up of scrotes looking to humiliate women. Idk why anyone would post there, most of the insults aren’t even funny or clever, just gross. Even the rating subs I avoid now because of this dynamic.

My ex posted a picture of us on there (A picture he’d taken of us while I was in hospital). I had absolutely no idea until hours later when he showed me, the thought it was fantastic and couldn’t figure out why I wanted him to delete it. I mean, at least they're fully clothed. What I truly don't understand are subs like Gonewild, where very young women (barely adults) post nude photos and fish for compliments. I truly don't get it. When I was younger, anyone who did that would have been called a desperate pathetic loser. What changed since then? What is WRONG with this generation of young women?! We were raised to think that empowerment meant studying and working hard to get a good job and impress people with our intellect and abilities. They seem to think empowerment is flashing your bare breasts on the internet to get compliments from losers and scrotes. It's so sad.

Those things are so sad and creepy to me. The women (and to a lesser extent, men) who post on there all seem like clinically depressed nihilists. Sometimes I wonder if there's an abuser putting them up to it. But I think there is a fair amount of women who think it's cool to encourage and withstand abusive comments. The commenters on there are vicious, and the male commenters waste no time hurling sexually humiliating insults at women. You really need to be a nihilist to think that's fun.

Okay. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I learned that one of the most effective strategies towards defeating fear is exposure to the thing/situation you fear.

Tons of people fear rejection (being roasted, insulted, hearing harsh/nasty words/criticism), and IMHO, this is one way to get exposure to that fear and help you get over the fear of rejection or criticism.

Having said that, It could also be really traumatizing. It could take an existing insecurity and really rub it in. YMMV

Hey! I am way into fds AND roasts. I think some girls/guys use it for attention but I personally feel most posts are for comedy purposes only. Many roasts are unoriginal but many more are just toooo funny and its a great time killer for me. But it's not everyone's thing; I get that.
