Case in point: Ex girlfriend had only $3k in savings (aka, 'play money'), yet went to Europe that summer, and only had about $1.5k in her 401k. She's been working as a teacher for 3 years.

I am the complete opposite. I max out an IRA, contribute 6% to a 401k, invest in additional mutual funds, and even buy precious metals. Now, believe me, I'm probably a bit overloaded on the investing, but I figure I'll do it when I'm younger and have an easier time later. I'd rather not be 35 or 40 and be in a constant state of worry. I have plenty of fun and have what I need with the funds I use now.

I once had a talk with her about finances when she asked to explain some 401k choices to her. She didn't understand any of it. She didn't understand the concept of compounding at all. Even tried explaining it as "You can have a European vacation every year almost if you put $10-15k away now." Her response "I don't have 10k... I want to go to Europe now before I'm old." Completely honest, I don't think most think more than 1-2 months out.

Sidenote: Her college was completely paid for by her parents, masters and all. iPhone plan still under her parents 'because it's cheaper that way'. Yeah, FREE for you cheaper. Car was bought new by her parents as a gift. Yet, she is independent, wanted to her married, and have 4 kids and a big house. I was going to be the beta bucks........ until shit went under.

She's been working as a teacher for 3 years.

This is the kind of person that's responsible for educating kids, she does not understand the concept of compounding.

Think about that for a second.

[–]cmiovino52 points 11 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Biology teacher to be exact.

But yes, point taken. That just set in - hard.

[–]StrokeGameHusky 38 points39 points40 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"Oh Em Geeeee, what's camp grounding interest?!?"

Yea she sounds like she could've starred in white chicks.. Next that hoe.

Thanks for the Molly-propism, man.

[–]krakosia 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Now scale that thought upto the national level and you know how bad the situation is. 80+% of the teachers are women in school. Numbers are similarly going up in colleges. The number of graduates from college are predominantly women and increasing further.

[–]simple_mech 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I bet she understands the concept of pounding ;)

[–]MGTOW_player 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Face down, ass up, accept seed.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

This is the kind of person that's responsible for educating kids, she does not understand the concept of compounding.

True enough, but if you overwork, underpay and blame everything on teachers, then of course you're not getting the best people for the job.

If you have an economics, chemistry, mathematics, etc degree and you actually understand compound interest, then it becomes quite hard to justify being a teacher exactly because you know how much your relatively low teacher salary (compared to what you could make elsewhere) will screw you over in the long run.

"But we only want teachers who love the job and who love kids!" If I love kids, then wouldn't I want a job that gives me a salary that can actually comfortably support a family?

[–]pk421 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't care how quality you are how do you not understand compounding if you're an adult

[–]TreePlusTree -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup, current teachers are low quality and overpaid. As is anyone in a union anywhere, myself included.

[–]cariboo_j 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Teachers make decent money in most western countries. In Canada they start around $50-$60k.

USA is an anomaly.

[–]Palpetinus 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Europe here, I don't get it.

Context: Being a teacher over here is one of the most paid jobs for the little amount of hours you're working.

[–]stash600 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

To be fair in many places in the US it is too. Many teachers have great benefits and job security, summers and school holidays on top of solid pay. It really all depends what district you work in as a teacher.

[–]throwaway320_ 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Where are you from? Europe is a big place, you can't just generalize. In the Netherlands it's paid shit for example.

[–]Arnoux 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not in Hungary. It is underpaid and low prestige here

[–]apackofwankers 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Uhh, if you leave high school without understanding compound interest, you are not fit to vote in a democracy, and your citizenship should be revoked.

[–]benmarvin 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My GF is a teacher and has worked with teachers that couldn't identify prime numbers. Seriously.

[–]hatertauts 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Are there any schools anymore with >50% male teachers? I'm presuming the famous UK schools (Eton and such) are still this way. What about Montessori?

[–]MoneyStatusLooks62 points 11 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

What you are describing is delaying gratification, and it's the #1 predictor of success in a huge number of pursuits. The importance of it cannot be overstated.

In fact, if you want to be successful, just try and do shit that is hard. 99% of people male/female, won't be up for that kind of dedication/sacrifice and will virtually guarantee you success. The overlap is huge, it applies to dating/career/investing/sports... practically anything.

[–]throwawayOP3841 17 points18 points19 points 11 years ago (34 children) | Copy Link

Precious metals? How's that working out for you?

Usually the folks at r/financialindependence and personal finance eat you guys alive when those words get mentioned.

[–]cmiovino 20 points20 points20 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yes, they 100% will, I subscribe to both those and any mention immediately gets trashed. I treat mine more like a 'write off' in my head.

As crazy as it sounds, look what's happening in Greece right now. Shit can happen and it's a last resort backup. 5% or so of your wealth in metals isn't over the top, which is why I mentioned it last. The bulk of your investments should be in paper assets like mutual funds, stocks, bonds, etc... real estate is really great too, but typically requires more capital to get started.

And if life goes merrily onwards with no hiccups, it's a given it will rise back above it's current ~$16/ounce (silver). Fun fact: they can't mine it out of the ground for less than $20/ounce (or higher). Silver is needed in industry for solar panels, computers, other technology.

[–]exuals -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'd say just put a few percent in Bitcoin opposed to stones.

[–]cmiovino5 points 11 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I'd have to say 'stones' which have held their value throughout history have a better chance at keeping value than ones and zeros on a harddrive.

But yeah, I get your point on the 'stones' thing.

[–]exuals -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Stones wasn't used in a derogatory sense, simply slang where I live for precious metals.

When investing, ones and zeros which can be bought or sold within minutes is more easier and convenient to work with than actual physical commodities.

I'd personally check a bank account number than weigh stones and calculate current market value.

Diamonds aren't valuable. A few companies have a monopoly on diamond mining and artficially restrict the supply to increase their 'value'.

Goldbugs say the funniest things. Guess what? we're not fucking Greece

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I doubt very much if anyone in the Kaiserreich ever expected the trials of Weimar Germany, but they happened nevertheless.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Whats the difference between Greece and the States? Not much, both systems are build on the same foundation. If you went to Greece a few years ago and told them whats happening to their country now, they would laugh in your face. Your reaction is like sticking your fingers in your ear and screaming "la la la, I can't hear you". You are willfully sticking your head in the sand and I can't really understand why you have such a polarized response towards precious metals and the possibility of collapse. Its happened before, e.g Germany and the Soviet Union as recent examples. All fiat currencies eventually collapse, there has NEVER been one that has remained successful, but of course this time its different right? There is nothing wrong with hedging your live saving against fiat through precious metal.

[–][deleted] 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You can say that about any country though, which is my point. While the causes may be different, economic collapse is pretty much inevitable for any country using a fiat system.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you went to Greece a few years ago and told them whats happening to their country now, they would laugh in your face.

Apparently you haven't been following news in Greece over the last 5 years. They have been in big trouble for a long time. In the US, things have gotten much better for us, and we are in a much stronger position than Europe or China.

But sure, buy gold.....

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Firstly, the primary reason the US looks "good" right now is because Euro QE is shielding the truth. When that finishes and the illusion starts to fade, there is very high probably the US will start its own QE4. The next bubble/collapse will not be isolated to an individual sector, and might even possibly remove the USDs global reserve status. I was taking about 10-20 years for Greece. If you are looking at short 5 year periods, of course gold is going to be a terrible investment (you shouldn't use it as one anyway). 5 years is a very short span of time for a country, only slightly longer than 1 US presidential term. Gold isn't an investment, it is the only method of wealth preservation that stood the test of time for known history. Why do you think central banks still hold huge amount of gold reserves. No one is going "get rich" of gold, they are simply keeping what they have already got.

[–]ComradeCynic 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is a way to hold money completely outside the banking system, once you buy it. Think about how that guy in Cyprus that worked all his life, got shafted when his million Euros in a Cyprus bank went up in smoke.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Maaaaan, if I had some of my money hidden away in gold I not have lost it in the divorce. Pull out $20 cash back every time I get groceries, and then buy some gold with it.

[–]Fallout99 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I think it's reasonable. Assuming he has an emergency fund of 3-6 months he already stated he maxed out his 401k and contributes 6% into the 401k.

[–]dogextraordinaire12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

With the greek crisis ongoing and signs of a Chinese economical slump on the way (economical expansion always had to end at some point), most of the world is doing the precious metals thing right now (times of economic uncertainty = buy gold).

Economics is finnicky though.

[–]throwawayOP3841 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I've just always been told that the rate of return is pretty lousy but am always curious to hear anecdotal information to the contrary. Sometimes things like that are a kick in the butt to actually research and upset an assumption like 'precious metals are a lousy investment vehicle.'

[–]Moraj8 points 11 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Metals always tend to be a hedge against the shit hitting the fan. More in the vein of wealth preservation than generation. Mostly because it is something relatively small, high value and transportable that is not easily eroded in terms of value unlike stocks that can become worthless overnight.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If whit hits the fan, you'll want land and marketable skills, not gold. You'd be better to invest in good hand tools and learning some skills. That will be good whether or not shit hits the fan.

[–]TBDMS 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It could easily be argued though that skills take both time and money investments, and a skill might not be sold off if shit doesn't hit the fan. Gold takes only money and much less time investment, and you can somewhat expect that if shit doesn't hit the fan you won't lose all that money necessarily, though you certainly won't gain as much as other investments in that scenario.

[–]grachuss 28 points29 points30 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I have pretty much the same background as your GF. I got a car as a graduation present (that I still drive 12 years later), pay my parents $40 per month for the unlimited data plan and I travel every year.

Only difference is Invested All my savings, sans 401k in real estate. It pays me a nice 15-20k a year. Also I never pay more than $800 on my plane tickets for trips since I pay most of my bills on my frequent flyer card.

I tried explaining how I always had money to a female coworker of mine. She was litterally too dumb to see past her face. She then decided I must be shady and reported me to internal affairs. That was a fun conversation, luckily the investigator assigned to my case also did REI so I was adjudicated quickly.

She just got a new car from a sexual harassment settlement. God forbid she invests any of that money AWALT.

[–]1sardinemanR 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You really shouldn't bother talking to these people and telling them anything.

I had people bitch at me while they went on trips around the world all year long, paid for crazy gadgets and clothing and went out every night. They insisted I was "lucky" to not be in debt and have money. Utterly absurd. You don't get "lucky", luck has nothing to do with managing your finances.

Most people in their 20s and 30s are idiots now. I befriended my co-workers in their 50s and 60s, we'd talk finances and they'd even help me out on residential deals and other investments. We'd even collaborate on business outside of work, and I still maintain good relations. This is how it's done. You learn from the people with money and work with them, building up your networks, using money to make more money.

This is also the principle reason most scientists and inventors are men. Because science and invention, like long term financial planning, involves abstract critical thought, and the ability to adjust on the fly for unforeseen contingencies.

In other words, it requires the ability to think further than 6 inches in front of your face.

This is the real reason that men still outdo women in STEM; it's not some "STEM boogeyman" keeping the hens out of the STEM fields. It's simply that women's brains just aren't wired for it.

That, and like you mention, women simply don't have the urgency to go into high-paying degree fields, because they just don't have to. Necessity, as they say, is the mother of all invention. And when little princess goes off to college so she can pat herself on the back with,

"I can college too, like the boys!"

and come out with a degree in Womens Studies with a minor in Basket Weaving, she knows it's all for show, because the hotter a woman is, the softer a degree she can attain. She's not there for a degree; she's there to find a man with a high paying degree, and of course to ride the cock carousel of guitar playing band member cads along the way.

For men, college is a means to an end. For women, college is the end; it is the destination.

[–]Senior Contributordr_warlock 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In other words, it requires the ability to think further than 6 inches in front of your face.

Isn't it a humorous coincidence that 6 inches so happens to be around the average size of a cock in her mouth, the distance between a cellphone and her face, and the distance between her face and make up mirror?

[–]OhAndOneMoreThing 22 points23 points24 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You sound just like my situation. My girl made over $100,000 in IT, working from home, but never had any money. She was behind on her HOA, mortgage payments, but Miami for the weekend? Hellz yeah. She would come up with hair-brained ideas to get rich like impulse buying a cryo-sculpting machine for like $4000. She had no money in the bank cause of these types of purchases and she makes more than $3000 a paycheck!

She would gaslight me and complain about my measly 44k salary. I had $25,000 in cash in the bank, two cars that were paid off, about $35,000 in my retirement account, etc. These bitches are retarded.

I was going to be the beta bucks....until shit went under. Congratulations to both of us.

Women only care about your immediate access to cash flow.

[–]2johnnight 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Her response "I don't have 10k... I want to go to Europe now before I'm old."

I understand why you are criticizing this but let me tell you there is a robust worldview where she is the rational one. Change your axioms and she is the one making the smarter choices, instinctively.

[–]TellMeYourFears 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

A broken clock is right twice a day.

It's the right decision, I agree, but it rises out of a mindset of instant gratification rather than actual planning. As such, it comes with the bi-products, i.e. mountains of debt etc.

[–]2johnnight 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No, that is not what I mean.

Your axiom is that life is infinite or at least very long. So you plan long term, for your own old age and for the benefit of your family/bloodline/clan.

Her axiom is that life is short and the pleasant part of life is even shorter (The Wall, remember?), so saving up and investing makes absolutely no sense. Everything earned should be spent or else it's wasted, because one can not take the numbers from the bank account into the grave. It's hedonism, but hedonism that makes sense.

I think both longtermers and hedonists would benefit from understanding the other life philosophy and incorporating it into their lives to some extent. Because both perspectives are true.

[–]TellMeYourFears 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I completely understood that from the first comment.

What I'm saying is that doing these trips to Europe etc were at the expense of poor quality of life later on. This is in the context of the thread, a load of poor decisions and instant gratification - I'm not saying "never do fun shit when you're young", just that doing it smart is the best option.

Your axiom is that life is infinite or at least very long

No, it isn't, which is why I agreed that doing stuff when you are young is good, but what I'm talking about here is that it's a good thing from the wrong mindset in this case. Like I said, doing fun shit is cool when you're young, but you need to be sure it's not causing further debt, and further enslavement down the line. I don't go through life assuming I'll die tomorrow, nor do I assume I'll never die, I plan, and look ahead.

[–]ScottRikkard 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I want to go to Europe now before I'm old.

I don't understand these women. I want to enjoy retirement while I'm fit. That means making fucktons of money now and hope the world is worth touring in 2045. I had my first kid at 27 and was hoping to be done at 30 ish so they little ones would be at college by my 50s. Why, the fuck, do these women want to have their kids from 35-40? You seriously want to deal with a 18 year old at 58?

Your ex GF and my ex wife are cut from the same cloth. My ex is 28, a year left with her Psyc Major, and a GPA that might not allow her to get into the Grad program. She also took out 32K in student loans, even though I was paying the mortgage, insurances (health, life, car) heating, electric, phone, data, tv, etc. Girl are her 401K and got up to 185lbs. Fucking stupid

I told her our marriage failed because she was looking to win the days and weeks and I was looking to win the years and decades.

I wish I could remember more of what the conversation entailed, since I'm sure it was pure gold, but the one line I remember from it that stuck with me forever was my ex-wife's philosophy on how her paycheck should be used - "Once the bills are paid, why not just spend the rest of it?"

The irony is that she frequently just ignores bills. She let a credit card rack up debt for no reason until it was maxed. She had the money to pay it and just didn't.

Even tried explaining it as "You can have a European vacation every year almost if you put $10-15k away now." Her response "I don't have 10k... I want to go to Europe now before I'm old."

This could be somehow related to the shelf-life of female sexuality. She might suspect that she won't have such a great time travelling Europe when she's older compared to when she's in her prime.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, balance. You don't have to be cheap and not enjoy life and not travel, but you got to be smart about it, too. Gotta balance it so that you don't die "young", never seeing Euroope or Asia or even the other side of the US; but don't also end up being a Walmart greeter if you make it to your 80's. Live frugally at home, save your money, don't rack up debt, get a job that offers vacation time, and travel with that. Now I have simple tastes, both at home and on travel. I'm okay staying in a motel or couch surfing and not going to Michelin star restaurants, but that helps.

This is leading into why Matriarchal societies always collapse.

[–]AureliusThunderkok 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

To be fair its probably more an explanation of why female strategies fail in the immediate aftermath of a patriarchal society. We live in a time of tremendous change and both sexes struggle with it. Another aspect of this is the notion that all of us are equally capable of all of these essential tasks. Generally, I would rather' have a male pilot and a female nurse.

[–]Sebaceous_Sebacious 4 points4 points4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Male nurses are still usually better.

[–]Senior Contributordr_warlock 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

It's about opportunity cost. Although a man will usually do better than a woman, his efforts are best placed elsewhere.

[–]NidStyles -5 points-4 points-3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not all matriarchal societies were proceeded by a patriarchy. Many of the African societies and Mayans are good examples of this. These societies peaked around a specific geographical region, then just vanished. They were all likely lead by a strain of women from a particular family, and their collapse was likely a result of lack in breeding or long term planning.

[–]Limekill 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

matriarchal

To my knowledge Mayans were not particularly matriarchal: "there is not a single reference to a woman in either known contemporary texts or later retrospective accounts of Early Classic events and personages at Copan"

Mayans were decimated by European disease and shifting alliances (bribing soldiers). A woman leader came to power in Toniná but that was one city and ironically the city held out the longest.

Also African tribes were captured by other Africans and forced to work as slaves, etc.

I doubt it was lack of breeding that killed an entire civilisation.

The greatest genocide in the world did not occur in Germany during WWII, but in North America upon the arrival of Christopher Columbus and in South America upon the arrival of Hernan Cortez. Men trying to raise a family properly are under great stress in America due to all the laws, education and indoctrination being placed on his kids and wife. Unless he's very RP and holds strong frame at all times (exhausting) he runs the risk of raising beta boys and whorish girls.

What's the payoff to raising "spoiled" kids? No retirement, no love in his old age, no money, no interesting adventures, just regrets.

You forgot a key reason why men hate jobs while women love them: men are actually held to account for their performance, and will get fired for mediocre results. Women do not get held to account, and mediocre performance will get them promoted. If you only had to work half as hard to get twice the results, would you like your job?

I wanted to throw up every time some woman told me she had to be "twice as good" as the guys. Never once saw any of those gals pull two all nighters in a row. Not even one all nighter, in fact. They were always gone by sundown. Always.

After working since 13, that is precisely what I have seen at all levels, gents, from when I was toilet cleaning to serving as an an M&A guy for Fortune 500 corporations.

[–]StManTiS 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your chance of promotion has almost nothing to do with your hard work.

They let women work in jobs as important as M&A?

[–]1sardinemanR 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's more because women are coddled at work. They are quickly promoted up, their work product doesn't mean a thing, they are never asked to do more work or criticized, and they can basically run around doing whatever they want.

Women can gossip, play passive aggressive games, leave early, take plenty of days off, and they are literally bullet proof. They don't even have to follow any company dress code. They can come to work in flimsy little clothing then bitch and complain that it's cold and demand the heat get turned up, while the dudes are sitting there sweating in professional clothing. And part of that is as you point out, parents pay for everything so it doesn't matter. But also companies are afraid of women suing them, so they overlook it all and coddle them.

By the time a lot of guys hit their late 20s, they are sick of it and many also have a good reputation, some money saved up, and if smart will try to leverage that. A lot work from home, others start their own businesses. One of my childhood friends dropped out of a six figure corporate America job because he couldn't stand the culture and now clears about $300k+ a year running his own firm. He claimed they didn't pay enough, and he went out and proved it.

A man with options is not going to put up with today's feminized BS workplace. Men without options have to justify why they're still getting bitched. Some men rise to the top in the corporate environment too though as another category.

Basically as men, you can't rely on an employer and things won't really be fair, so you have to take what you can. The silver lining is that the men that stick around generally demand more in negotiations and do get paid more as a result, and you can read about feminists complaining about that all the time. But the truth is, capable men will always get paid more than women because women are inept and worthless. If the men don't get paid more they just leave.

I agree with the sentiment that the workforce is harder on men, Indian families don't have this drive to move out though, you're more or less expected to live with your parents unless you have to move out for marriage or long distance work/uni.

Women totally ignore their easy way out, and the fact is that any girl who goes into a highly trained field is likely to not work nearly as much as man, i.e a doctor. Like I think women should be allowed to go into what career they want, but we shouldn't subsidize poor decisions and universities/businesses shouldn't be forced to have ratios.

It's also funny to watch them hit the wall in a sad way, when someone who's constantly going Ibiza is suddenly coming to you for financial advice, then they complain they don't have any savings, '£10000 is too much to save over 7 years in the workforce', what about all those damn holidays.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

As an indian guy, I feel this drive more than ever. After having a 6.5 year relationship end, I can definitely relate to the anger phase of TRP and am willing to admit that I am probably still in it.

Being 27 and a year out of professional school, I feel the need to move out and do my own thing because at this point, I will simply not accept an arranged marriage and when it comes to meeting women, saying that you still live at home at 27 or 28, despite your individual situation, won't exactly get their pussies wet.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah Indian families don't have this drive to want you out by 19, ofc you wanna get out, for all intents and purposes you can be considered a westerner. I hope you didn't waste those years and got enough savings.

[–]199639 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I will simply not accept an arranged marriage

Why? I'm just curious, I don't know much about it but I certainly see plenty of flaws in the "fall in love then get married then fall out of love because people change" route my culture takes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

India is getting westernized more and more everyday, just look at how feminism has been sprouting up lately over there. Also, imagine how the United States and its culture would look to a woman who has been suppressed by a culture so much that she had to opt for an arranged marriage? Imagine what would go through her head seeing all the "empowered" women doing things to men in marriages. Now, you could say that she will not stray due to fear of cultural shaming but regardless, marriage is a double edged sword, a huge gamble in more ways than one, and with an arranged marriage, could get out of control even more so than a regular one.

For a man, independence means thinking about the future, about taking care of yourself, your wife, you possible children and maybe your parents. Paying for retirement for 2 people and college for several. Long term career planning is stressful, and career decisions mean more when you don't plan on quitting in 5 years to make a baby once you convinced yourself that you made it in the professional world.

Independence is being able to take care of yourself. Nothing more.

You answered my question with a strawman response, it is extremely hard to reply to that without looking like a troll because I was adding inane to the already inane.

I have not given my stance on woman, "game", misogyny et cetera, I have also not denied anything, care to explain what you think I am denying? I am simply curious why people in this sub seem to extremely often belittle woman when that is clearly not the goal of this sub nothing more, its not about whether its right or wrong, good or bad, works or does not work, that is irrelevant to my inquiry.

I never claimed them to be "special snowflakes" and have never thought that, if the majority of woman are actually like this I assume my opinion is different because I surround myself with strong, independent people regardless of gender and have seen it equally in the genders, if not titled towards the contrary of this thread.

The problem is you are projecting your opinions and what seems to be insecurities on me and are therefore assuming I am coming to this with a stance and/or agenda and then trying to insult and refute that stance but this is not the case.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You can't drop the mic when you link to a single study by a no name university in Austrila, that as a bonus we can't read. Last time I checked a tiny university in Adelaide isn't at the forefront of workplace satisfaction among the sexs.

Come back when you have something from a reputable source that we can read and validate. A study from an Ivy League university, Oxford, Stanford or the like. I doubt you will find one, as saying something like this that goes against the feminine imperative so strongly will not get published.

The OP's original argument just fits under the long standing accepted truth of women simply being the oldest teenager in the house. Expecting more than that is asking for trouble. Their might be exceptions, but I have found pretty much all the exceptions are much happier that a man is leading them than having to make all their own decisions. Isn't this why /u/rollotomassi defines, pretty early on, that a man's freedom is the most important thing and why Corey Worthington is the ultimate concept of Alpha?

A man's time is his ultimate currency. Him doing what he wants with it is what matters. Wage-slavery to be a successful BB is just as bad by this definition.

IIRC, there is another example (I don't really have time to dig for it), of a guy who bails to go live in Tahiti and do what he wants.

tl;dr : Alpha isn't about money. Alpha is about control of fate and dispensation of time. Alpha could be party-hardy-dead-by-27 or it could be well-invested-well-built-retired-at-35.

Don't get me wrong, I love traveling myself, and I'm not really the type of guy who thinks too far ahead with things either, but damn… I don't think even I'm that irresponsible.

Also, I'm just a fucking cook in a restaurant who earns $15/hr and has 2 more years for a BFA in painting. I love to paint and have been making steady progress as an illustrator, but damn.. Kinda wish I just sucked it up and went after more lucrative career options after hearing what she made as a pharmacist.

Then again, I don't plan on having children or ever getting married. I don't need a lambo and a big house to be happy, so I guess it doesn't matter when all is said and done..

Most women under 30 spend frivolously and just barely cover rent, clothes, cheap vodka and vacation. The plan is eventually their beta bucks will come save her from the paycheck to paycheck life.

I've noticed the older women I go out with (26-29) size me up for beta bucks faster than the college girls. They can see the end of the line is coming and are desperately pulling at strings. Fascinating stuff when you actually realize wtf is going on. Its a solid plan that will more often than not end up working.

Before TRP I would see women spend like idiots and be confused as fuck about how they aren't saving anything and just living week to week. Now I get it.

Thanks TRP

Tldr; OP gives an anecdotal example of a woman being short sighted. Supported by anecdote from top commenter.

Conclusion: 50% of the human race is relatively incapable of thinking ahead.

Your being down voted because calling out something that really rustled your jimmies. You just came in here and screamed NAWALT! Please read the side bar more.

Especially this post by Rollo - http://therationalmale.com/2012/10/25/generalizations/

Female Lawyers are not women, they are a different species, I am sorry you have to interact with them all day and they have tainted your view. Female lawyers must embrace their masculinity in the extreme to be competitive and are living in constant fear that someone is going to call her out for wearing the emperors new clothes. It is a sad sad story. His post may be a generalization, but I see it way more often than the other - 80/20 rule applies.

Not all women are bird brained, some of them do plan long term and make good money.

If a woman can pay for her shoes and a trip to Ibiza with her besties, then she is happy and content with the hobby job - never mind that her parents pay for her rent, student loans, and that she uses their credit card to buy gas for the car they bought her as a graduation present from her masters program in museum studies. She is an independent woman.

LOL If I only had a dime for every time I saw this.

when it comes to long-term career and financial decisions, women definitely like to ignore the fact that (i) they have an easy "out" when it comes to the labor force, and (ii) it is much more socially acceptable for them to find a man to take care of them financially as opposed to the other way around

Which of course ties into the whole "78 cents on the dollar" wage earning argument.

it would but the 78 cents study was debunked; let's keep with real fact when discussing.
