Fiscal conservative, socially a classical liberal - probably puts me closest to libertarian on the spectrum
[–]turok281[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
What does fiscal conservative mean? Free market, deregulation, low taxes? That's libertarian.
[–]DontTreadOnSnek14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Fiscal conservatives promote restraint on federal deficit spending (they want a balanced budget), and generally prefer to handle things at the state/local level, but recognize that federal funding is often needed in some areas.
In comparison, libertarians often want to starve the beast in every possible way, at every level of government. They don't care about maintaining a balanced budget, they just want to slash and burn the government so that private industry can take over.
They're very similar, but not the same.
[–]En-Zu0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
If we were going to get real technical I'd consider myself a socialist but also I do care about the budget and I'd push for it to be balanced.
It seems to me that the lines between fiscal conservative, conservative, and libertarian (and maybe even socialist) are fuzzy.
[–]DontTreadOnSnek0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Socialism with regard to economics prefers collectivized spending at the federal level, at which point the single state decides which issues will be addressed with that funding. Sometimes regions of the country and their dire needs get overlooked in this type of system depending on which political party is in office.
Conservatism with regard to economics prefers decentralized spending at the state/local level, to push resources towards issues that may impact that particular region more strongly than the national need. Sometimes these solutions cost more because they can't properly utilize the economies of scale that the federal government can use.
[–]En-Zu-1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think this argument is mostly just about the proper extent that a government is federated which is always an interesting discussion for me but I wonder why that kind of decentralized approach necessarily falls outside the scope of a socialist economy to you.
Let's say we do delegate more powers to the states individually so that they have more control over their respective local policies. Wouldn't currently liberal states like California, Washington, New York, etc adopt a more socialist economy even though its scope is local?
[–]sssimasnek0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Libertarian I guess is the closest. I was raised very conservative and was more anarchist in my youth because I hated the stuffy old fucks. Some things I am conservative on others more liberal but more conservative as I got past 30s. People peg me as Libertarian frequently but I do not agree with them either wanting to dismantle ALL of government. Like one candidate wanted to shut down ANSI, as an Engineer without standards most of the shit made could not exist like the internet.
It's a tough game playing center now days. Anyone who is too far left or right frequently finds themselves one minute agreeing with me to debating/hating me because I take all they can give and have made girls cry and have to run to their safe space. I am just coldly pragmatic like my robots perhaps. I live in a notoriously liberal region. Trump's election almost made me fat from all the popcorn I ate as I watched the city meltdown. I voted for Jill Stein as a strategic fuck you vote. Clinton was going to win my state no matter what because of one city in this state controls everything due to the population distribution. She took my state with a commanding lead with 2-3 counties and the rest were hard Trump in the rural areas but still beat him 3-1. I got my start in politics working on Ross Perot's campaign and am old enough to remember just why the Clintons are a fucking cancer to humanity.
So I figured for fun I would vote green party. Jill Stein was a nutter but her brand of crazy could be easily contained or negotiated with unlike Clinton or Trump as they are both type-A personalities; plus she was not going to win in all likelihood, Trump was inevitable. I knew based on the campaign Trump supporters if he won would be hunted in the streets, they did not disappoint my predictions as I watched with my own eyes young university feminists beat up women in the streets for 'betraying women' by voting Trump. I get to trigger them by fearlessly admitting not voting for Clinton but shut down their stupid 'x-isms' gaslighting. I would just say 'well my candidate was a woman who was a doctor and actually provided value at some time to the community instead of feeding off it like a leech most of their life. Her running mate was a minority and civil rights activist. If you are so progressive why were you supporting yet another establishment rich white woman and a good old boy?' The white guilt sword cuts both ways ;p I also remind them Clinton won our state and my vote does not matter in their majority rules version of US democracy. Watching the crossed wires in their heads meltdown is priceless. When I was younger trolling ultra conservatives was entertaining but they are salty. Neo-liberal tears are sweeter, more intoxicating than mead.

Contrary to conventional wisdom (at least what I've read), this place is very diverse ideologically. Good.
[–]En-Zu3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I'm here for the evolutionary psych knowledge & gender psychology material. The fact that there's a diverse userbase here means that its solid.
[–]Ololic0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Me too I wasn't expecting there to be a post at the very top of the sub that proves that it's diverse
[–]En-Zu1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This place attracts people that are concerned about gender relations and skeptical about feminism & the idea that the sexes are biologically and mentally equivalent.
So it's not really a shock that it skews heavily conservative as a result because mainstream conservative media outlets are negative towards feminism and liberal ones are favorable.
But there are people like me that consider themselves Liberal even though I disagree with the standard social science model and a lot of feminist identity politics because it's also not THE most important issue to me politically. On foreign policy and economics etc I just tend to agree with democrats in American more.
[–]Ackcell12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Socialist here. Higher taxes but more benefits.
[–]SFesq3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. When the essentials are taken are of by society (food, healthcare, education), you are more free to live any kind of life you want, create your own identity, and forge your own path. Being a wage slave or debt slave is not compatable with TRP end-goals IMO. The happiest guys I know, who live the most RP truths, are all left-leaning and live in liberal areas (cities, Western Europe, CA and NYC). More latitude to live by your own frame without the social repercussions that living in a conservative/small town/religious locale would entail, I think.
[–]SasquatchMcKraken2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Explain. Because I know self-proclaimed "socialists" whose socialism boils down to (status quo + universal health insurance), and then I know socialists who actually think the government should own a bunch of shit. With plenty of people in between these two positions.
[–]Ackcell0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I even believe the gov't ought to monopolize certain areas. Private banks, private insurance companies and private schools (1st through 12th grade) should not be allowed. That being said, I am not against capitalism. I just think certain areas should be off limits.
[–]SasquatchMcKraken0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I see. My instincts are to keep insurance private, but England has an NHS that they seem perfectly happy with so who knows. I'm ambivalent about private schools. Public schools serve an important social integration function (which is partly why our forefathers despised separate Catholic parochial schools) which is about as important as any education they might provide. I'd probably make an exception for established, elite private schools though. But as for nationalizing the banks, frankly I can't even imagine it. Regulation, definitely. But gov't ownership? That seems excessive.
[–]Dookiestain_LaFlair0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Do you think the workers should own the means of production? Or do you mean Nordic Model Capitalism where there are higher taxes and a robust social safety net but the economic system is still capitalism?
I am not a communist. I see capitalism as a catalyst for progress. I live in Sweden and I think our model is quite good. Big gov't doesn't bother me. I would quite like the Swedish gov't to expand their sphere of influence and maybe monopolize some (more) areas.
[–]Dookiestain_LaFlair-1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Enjoy it while it lasts, your grandchildren will be living under Islamic rule in 150 years unless you expel the Mohammedan hordes.
Your model only works because you have a homogenous society that is run my white males. Even now the feminists are destroying your country. If America got rid of the leeches like lazy blacks and mexicans that abuse the welfare system, and the hook nosed rats that promote "diversity" to breed whites out of existence, we could have a system like that.

Fuck off with this. Political ideology is far too complex to be reduced down to "Conservatives are MANLY MEN because they don't need no gobernment help!, meanwhile LIBRULLS want hand outs!!". First off, I'm an atheist and modern day conservatives seem to have great difficulty divorcing religiosity from social policy. I work in healthcare (physical therapist) and I can't tell you how many "manly" conservatives bitch and moan about gobernment handouts, yet are staying rent-free in the hospital room due to shit (usually no) insurance, for which, in-turn, will mean higher premium costs to those of us with decent insurance. I could go on, but please, tell me why you believe TheRedPill and being conservative are mutually supportive perspectives.

[–]Disciple_of_Libertas2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Disciple_of_Libertas8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Essentially we see people who self identify as liberals wholly endorsing third wave feminism, fat positivity, and big government programs. If you're a classical liberal then it is different. Perhaps a better term to use would be leftist, socialist, or Marxist for those people.
[–]Wolfgang985 points points points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The flaw in your logic is quite clear: you automatically assume those that identify as "leftists" do so on both the social and economic spectrums. The truth couldn't be more opposite.
Acknowledging the repeated failure of conservative economic policies is not synonymous with supporting feminism, "gender fluidity", and/or transsexualism.
Frankly speaking, I enjoy having well kept roads, succesful public educational systems, and a litany of other public services that benefit society.
[–]Disciple_of_Libertas1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I didn't assume anything. I was simply saying why many view the world Liberal in a negative light. This is due to outlets like Fox News beating the term into the ground without differentiating.
[–]ISODAK5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
The contradiction I see is that we observe the disastrous consequences of ceding any control of your life to a woman. But liberals advocate handing over enormous amounts of control over their life and wealth to the government (based on a similar lie that it cares about you).
Put simply, as I pointed out to a newly red-pilled co-worker, you're already cucked because you're paying to raise other men's children through taxation and welfare.
[–]iquinsooacha16 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
So, assuming your theory is congruent with how society really is (rather than what it ought to be), a state like Kansas under leadership of Sam Brownback should be the ideal situation, right? Also, ask yourself, who are the real welfare queens? Many (if not most) of people who utilize the food stamps program work part-time/full-time jobs. Also, states who take more in federal funds than it pays out (the takers of society) are red states (West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi) while states like New York and California pay more to the federal government than they take in. What I'm getting at is it's a lot more complicated than you're insinuating.

Oh good, LiveFreeorDieMAGA wants to chime in for his team. Debt vs Deficit, what's the difference? Was I referring to the state's debt or the deficit in my previous post? http://www.politifact.com/california/article/2017 Review the numbers, California pays more in taxes than it receives from the federal government. If you do not recognize politifact as a credible source, then I will not engage with you any further. I do not see alt-right sources as credible avenues for information.
[–]LiveFreeorDieMAGA 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't discuss politics with those who are idiologically possessed, not that you are. I also view politifact with the same level of trust as alt-right sources. Everyone is pushing their agenda and writing things their audience want to hear. Also if there is an error in communication, it is the fault of the person making the initial point. Communication 101.

(Not a conservative)
Many red states are rural, and not near the coast, so they tend to be have mostly lower paying agricultural and manufacturing jobs. With lower wages goes lower real estate prices, and just generally lower cost of living ($1 in Cali and $1 in Kansas are almost like different currencies). Additionally, if there's a Federal mandate that doesn't take local cost of living into account, like say $15 minimum wage, it will hit rural communities hardest, driving many of them into eligibility for assistance.
It isn't merely as simple as "took more money, thus bigger freeloaders". You could argue that taking assistance in this situation is merely offsetting the economic damages caused by assholes in Washington. Regardless of that, it's a good illustration of the core problem of political centralization: there's a lot of socio-economic diversity among the states, and forcing a single solution on everyone is incredibly disruptive/destructive.
Paying the most taxes, similarly, is not necessarily an indicator of anything good. A ton of money flows through Washington into the lobbying and military-industrial firms in DC, and to Wall Street in NYC. So they pay big taxes on their big ill-gotten gains, while other states actually have to earn it on the market. As mentioned by others, these states also tend to have massive financial problems, and are losing population due to their high cost of living (largely due to interventionist policies).
Edit: also wouldn't say Kansas is the ideal anything. Mostly for the socio-economic and geographical/climate reasons, but also red states tend to be bad on individual liberties (while blue are bad on economic liberties).
[–]ISODAK0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh, and if it's important which groups are net tax payers and receivers, it's far more important to observe men vs. women. Since the state basically just pillages men to give favors to women in exchange for votes, it makes sense that any male who has taken the red pill should be in favor of shrinking or eliminating the state.

Government is good I'd much rather pay taxes and have roads and police and firemen and schools to educate my children with thing like math and science and arts, this has absolutely nothing to do with woman and I don't understand how you could possibly come to such a conclusion
Did you pull that line out of a 5th grade public school textbook? You realize you'd pay far less and receive better service on the market, right? The government is a giant coercive monopoly that takes far more from you than it gives. Competition > Monopoly.

Ancap here, and I can actually see plausible situations where RPers are libs. Many statists have the (often un/subconscious) desire to control others. As despicable as this sounds to many, it is amoral in the same sense that RP is amoral. The statist often believes himself to have the knowledge or means to do the "good" kind of control. He either believes that he'll fall into 1 of 2 camps in a statist society - the one that makes the rules or controls, or the one who benefits from the theft being executed by the hand of the state. Often both.
How is this plausibly RP? In many cases it is not. However, consider this. Seeing statism for what it is does not free anyone here of the chains with which it binds them. We live in the system, and must adapt accordingly. If you're left with 2 choices - bitch and moan, or survive and thrive, which is more RP?

I'm a libertarian but I don't think RedPill is linked to any political party or ideology. In fact accepting that feminism has happened makes it so that I can get more sex. RedPill is about knowing the reality is that feminism now exists and to adjust your sexual strategy accordingly, not to try preventing what's already happened.
Many conservatives are all about religion and being married before sex, which doesn't even work anymore. So that same argument could possibly extend to conservatives, since they were taken over by religious fundamentalism which doesn't allow pre-marital sex.
Honestly I see how both could be RedPill but since they hate each other so much they'll never accept each other as RedPill. Eventually they may learn the truth, there is no true political party, and the system is used to simply enrich party leaders at the cost of voters.
[–]turok281[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Exactly. You can't have a government and freedom at the same time. As a libertarian i see the government as a necessary evil and as such it needs to be kept at a bare minimum of power.
RedPill and Libertarianism are much closer than you think. We promote the individual here. Personal growth and improvement and not just sexual strategy. You can't grow if you are a slave of a system that pulls you down and tries to keep you "equal" to the rest.
[–]ultrasuperthrowaway1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Great points, I like when we agree on some points and can respectfully disagree on others. That is what makes intelligent conversation and grow and learn as individuals. I suppose RedPill is more than just sexual strategy and does encompass personal growth as well.

I'm not one of them, but I'll throw the Red Reds a bone here. I identify as libertarian, because it is how I think it should be. However, I totally understand that it isn't how it can be. Too many people are too dependent on the leadership and guidance of others for their day to day lives. In the absence of religious moderation, which is largely why early American liberty worked, there is nothing but chaos.
As much as it disgusts me, I'm pretty sure fascism is the future for most of us. Just look at China leading the way there.

The fundamental problem with them is that they do not hold western values. They like to subvert and then take control. Once in power they pursue their version of Utopia. It makes me wonder why human mind is so prone to dogmatism. Critical thinking is such a rare trait.
[–]Disciple_of_Libertas0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Critical thinking is scary, it has the power to absolutely shatter everything you once thought you knew. It has the power to literally change reality. There is a reason the Marxists called religion the "opiate of the masses" because it explains literally everything. It is a shield against the chaos of the world. On that note Why you think the CIA is researching memetic warfare?
The control on information has ended thanks to internet. However, the downside is that anyone now has the power to reach people and spread their propaganda (liberal media, alt right media, you name it). That is why i said that critical thinking is such a rare trait. Without it you are doomed to be a puppet, a useful idiot. Personally, as a rule of thumb i always dig deeper if news triggers an emotional response in me. More often than not they are designed to do that.

There is only one right. The right to be free (negative liberty). You don't have a "right" to education or welfare or you name it. That equals to having the right to steal someones property (through violence) and therefore take away his liberty.
[–]great_artists_steal 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't mean "rights" in the moral sense but in the legal sense, e.g. the right to marry - liberals would argue that this right should be equally rewarded to everyone (or noone, as in your example above), not just a select group of people.
[–]justlikestoargue -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In the US the constitution outlines the right to education for kids, for example. The constitution also says it's the job of the government to provide for the welfare of the people.

I think it's pretty hard to be a true Red Piller and not be Libertarian/Conservative. Since Socialists would have no issue with being divorce raped or sharing the incredible big burden society places on men for no reason. Also, the state is clearly not a good agent in helping self improvement, since it takes away your resources to give them to less deserving people. Overall I am a bit surprised by the big number of liberals here
[–]En-Zu1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You can consider yourself liberal without thinking that the social safety net is a good idea in all situations. These hard distinctions make it difficult to account for individual nuances.
For example, there are religious left-wing folks that agree with the left economically but diverge on things like gay rights and abortion. Which one of those things they value most is going to determine which way they sway because there isn't a political party that caters specifically to them. Especially in the U.S. where there isn't a parliamentary system that allows for diversity in parties.

I'd say I'm an Conservative, but Spekr, and some other sites, said I'm a Libertarian, so I'm gonna vote that...
[–]rigbed0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Socially conservative definitely. Fiscally I recognize there should be fluctuation but socially we should stay conservative. However I recognize that that isn't feasible. If we oppress women women will eventually convince betas into giving them rights. Once we give them rights we see why they shouldn't have them. I'm libertarian on unique libertarian issues like guns and weed. Overall I'm a nationalist libertarian who leans far right on some issues.
[–]PhishPhan7000 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nice to see so many libertarians. I consider myself to be conservative in terms of economic policy and moderate to conservative in terms of social policy. Nationalistic, Pro-Israel, Anti-Big Government ect.

This subreddit should speak for itself. Its users should not feel pressured into or out of sharing their perspectives.
Libertarian/Conservative mix, I guess. Though I don't really like any of the labels. Center-right or "on the left wing of the right wing" would probably be most accurate. On some issues, like guns, I'm rather far-right. There aren't any issues where I'm far-left but I have a few pretty liberal views. But most of my outlook has a gentle rightward tilt.

Posted this before on TRP but it's again relevant so why not.
I think the Left is generally just seen as being more accomodating to feminism and sjwing (because it is) which this sub is kind of opposed to and that's why it attracts so many right wing folks. But I'm left wing and I don't particurly care about the sjw movement. It doesn't faze me. And that's really one way to fish out the conservative and liberal posters on this thread. The Liberal TRP perspective is more "Shrug that's just the way women are I'm glad that its in the open." Whereas the conservatives are more likely to want to go back to the Old World where policies were in place to make the BP strategy work and repress female hypergamy and sexual strategy.

Truth isn't identified with a label.
The Trivium Method means you gather all data, then use your own thinking to form a judgement.
Watch this (Mark Passio):
https://youtu.be/g9iZAzHxc7M
Herd animals accept labels... we are supposed to be beyond that level.
Even Neoreaction has a saying:
...which refers to the (Blue Pill) Overton Window always moving left.
Anyone not headed towards deeper myths (Blue Pill) and instead towards Truth (Red Pill) is not to be considered one of our enemies.
The intensity of Truth (clarity) is all that matters... no enemies towards the Truth.

Humans are still a tribal animal to the extreme.
[–]NeoreactionSafe1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And you can't become wise if you follow the herd.
Being a beta male means following.
Slavery is simply when you follow orders and are okay with it.
Wage slavery is a trade of your obedience for cash.
Very few people see the value in thinking for yourself "just or the heck of it" because knowing the Truth has some value to you.
Truth can't pay the bills by itself... but knowing more can lead you to be more effective with what labors you get into.
"Work smart not hard" as they say.

This guy, Mark Passio, speaks the truth. But the way he presents it, I don't think he'll be winning over any plugged in men. Only those dudes who have a tendency to blame everything for their own wrongs like listening to ranting while nodding their heads in agreement. After that of course they just continue their simple routines.
I think the reason Jordan Peterson is successful and will continue to be, is because the way he presents the truth is in a a calm manner, in small doses at a time.
[–]NeoreactionSafe-1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Mark Passio is for guys with clear objective thinking.
His voice can be brutal at times.
Some faggoty beta male with soft tender "feelings" would be turned off by Mark Passio as he can practically yell at you at times.
Mark Passio requires some mental toughness.
David Icke is more mellow... they say similiar things but the personalities are polar opposites.
Truth cares little for personal temperment.
[–]pellrid0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't know your stance on helping other men realize the truth, but the case I'm trying to make is exactly that:
faggoty beta male with soft tender "feelings" would be turned off by Mark Passio
Most men that are (really) in need of help, are the oversensitive type. They need "motivational" media, the kind that makes them want to move their ass. The kind that eventually makes them thirsty for more knowledge.
Myself, I rather enjoy to listen to a calmer manner of speaking, "ranting" isn't for everyone. Or I just read, although reading isn't for everyone either, in my experience.
Don't know about David Icke yet.

I identify as moderate conservative with isolationist tendencies and I worship the free market. Rand Paul is my guy.
For my socialist friends let me ask you, go live in a socialist country that is not under the defense and deterrence umbrella of the US-NATO and tell me it's a good life. It's not a terrible life but there's limited options and motivation, often huge corruption. Lower mobility because the system has more control.
I support government intervention in order to foster the conditions for competition and investment and to prevent economic collapse, also a healthy and strong workforce but this safety net does not mean given shit to people for just being people. It also doesn't mean government intervention should be default. In fact it must be reserved for last case. Like using a credit card. On some level responsibility and individual choice brings joy and wisdom. Take that from people and they lapse into nihilism and decadence
Every major capitalist society needs a minimum safety net or a social insurance program but that isn't free and power and corruption always coagulates under any system. In socialist countries the most powerful are those who are connected to the government or labor councils. Everyone else has minimal say and their opportunity is limited. All these universal programs cost a shit ton and many of these countries with universal everything cut back massively on other discretionary spending like military. The US is the deterrent for all those Western European and Asian tiger countries, they don't need to spend money on their defense as much and likewise they often piggy back on US R&D so their healthcare and education costs are a fraction. Nothing in life is free kiddos.
[–]SanjayMethylPump0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Also OP, US liberals are pro capitalism but also pro limited safety net programs. They have an individualist outlook and are generally pro intervention abroad. The far left (Sanders type) are socialist. Often they both vote democrat but there's a huge difference between bill Clinton (center left) and Bernie sanders
[–]1by1is30 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
For: -Capitalism, free market, free trade, pro immigration, pro globalization. -Limited government -Pro universal healthcare, support strong environmental laws
Against: feminism, socialism, nationalism, nazism.
Unsure: While I am for lower taxation, I don't mind progressive taxation upto a reasonable level. I also believe that keeping the majority of the people happily fed is the key to building a wealthy society, because a happily fed working class will result in a stable society and stability is good for business. So some form of welfare is necessary.
Having a live count is the worst idea ever, man. You do know, that however "redpilled" an individual is, that person will always be biased towards the majority's opinion. It's human nature.
This poll isn't a representation of individuals' personal political views, no matter how many exceptions there are.
I myself had to debate my own views, seeing how many people voted for other political ideas.
Bad poll.

Dude I'm 17 and just started learning about politics this election cycle but before any of that I studied socialism in school and that political system is fucking pure garbage
[–]En-Zu0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link
Well when you compare the two, libertarianism and socialism I mean, libertarianism represents the extreme of having very little to no government. This makes people who disagree with that claim tempted to identify as socialist.
When you look at it that way democratic socialism is not that difficult to understand. It's a free market system but with worker protections, public utilities like heat/water/education , and industry regulations and some public works like highway road systems. The united states right now technically would be a socialist state.
Most people agree with a fair amount of government they just disagree with the welfare state and that's perfectly fair. However, to me, with the political situation we find ourselves in where poor people actually already draw funds from the system it makes sense to mitigate their cost on the system.
So for example subsidizing poor folks insurance plans can help them get preventative care which takes the strain off of hospital E.R.s which ultimately saves money. Giving homeless people housing reduces crime (and imprisoning someone is kind of expensive in and of itself).
If we did not have these certain stipulations like people must recieve care from E.R. rooms and people must have certain provisions in prison etc then I could see the kind of hard knuckle conservative state being cost effective but the reality is that we as a society have long ago decided along with the rest of the civilized world that citizens are entitled to certain rights like not dying outside of a hospital for lack of having proof that they can pay for the treatment or that prisoners have a certain right to not starve to death etc.
So it's not a question of justice (something that conservatives focus on) like did they "earn" these priveleges and more just a question of practicality for me.
[–]SanjayMethylPump0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
SMDH.
US is not a socialist state, for one the welfare state is very conservative and minimalistic, largely means tested programs and social insurance type programs like SS and disability. Canada is more of a socialist democracy but still far from classic socialist democracies you find in Western Europe.
Just because a country has a welfare state does not make it socialist. My brudda you are mistaken. As capitalism trends toward big business, it trends toward big government too in order to maintain the creative destruction process with a safety net. Or else it will be disproportionate poverty and political instability. A functioning free market society always progresses toward some form of welfare state, or else it becomes vulnerable to collapse (see 1920's and 1930's). Welfare state is part and parcel of capitalism. My brudda you need to read economics again, and not spread misinformation to young people.
[–]En-Zu0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I think entitlement programs like medicaid etc take up enough of the federal budget to call the u.s. a welfare state. It might not be to the extent of western european countries but its definitely way more than say, china.
[–]SanjayMethylPump1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You misunderstand.
Any capitalist nation with a developed, mechanized economy has a welfare state. Or else the conditions for the market won't exist. Countries have welfare states or safety nets. It comes once creative destruction from rapid innovation causes unsustainable political and socioeconomic problems. The US has a welfare state. But it's a market economy, a republic that operates on capitalistic economic practice. It is not socialist, and very far ATM from being socialist.
I actually agree with libertarians when they say that the welfare state is created by market regulations on labor. Things like the minimum wage and OSHA regulations make it so that unskilled/manufacturing labor in the u.s. can't compete with countries that lack those regulations.
If it weren't for those things then there actually would be potential employment possible for some of those folks. As it is and with those regulations the welfare state & investing in people's educations are really the only ways to address the problem of poverty in the u.s.
I agree. But I also think we need to cut the fat in universities. Education is too expensive. Abolishing minimum wage would not make people more competitive as cost of living is so high. Perhaps there are long term ripple effects that come from abolishing labor regulation but I have not thought about that today and frankly I am in the middle of a commute and busy day
