One thing I really like about my boyfriend is he never lets me pay for stuff. The only time I ever managed to pay for a date was because he had never been to the place before and I was prepared at the register. No matter how much I tell him I can pay he’ll never let me. Makes me feel special.

I don't understand this at all. If I ever go out to eat with someone, date, friend, family, work aquaintance, etc. I am prepared to pay for everyone's meal. If I invited these people out to eat, I'm prepared to pay because I invited them so I'm the "host." Stuff happens. People forget their wallets. Whatever. If I'm sharing a meal with someone, I'm willing to pay for them.

I've never paid on a date. Maybe it's just where I live. I always offer to split, but I've been on a lot a first dates and never paid.

A man that expects you to pay is going to treat you like shit. Why don't people understand that paying on dates is a vetting process? They call women shallow but every man that I've paid for or split with has treated me terribly. I tried the whole "equality in dating" thing and sorry it just doesn't work out.

WHY are so many men AND women saying that you should expect to go Dutch on dates?! It is odd how sometimes there is a huge disconnect between online and "real-life" and this is definitely one of those instances. One of my exes would not even let me come close to paying, and the other definitely paid all throughout the talking stage without question and then avoided going on dates later on (even though I would pay for him sometimes during the relationship- this was pre-FDS). I was talking to a guy about my first ex and talked about how I felt bad that I never paid for dates and my friend was very adamant that guys SHOULD be paying and he would never make a woman pay.

What the people in r/dating_advice say is complete opposite of what people mostly say IRL. Reddit is a pretty bad place to seek out dating advice ESPECIALLY if you are woman. Most of the people on r/dating_advice are probably men, most men are LV and look out for their own interests and want to help a fellow bro out. FDS is the exception, because it is a female-dominated sub.

I will give you all an example. I was very in love with my first boyfriend, and we were almost 4 months in (but we were good friends for almost a year) and I still was not 100% sure about having sex with him yet, even though we would spend the night together and came close a few times. There were a few reasons why I did not feel comfortable with him but the main one being he kept hiding me from his parents. Anyway, I posted on a Reddit sub asking for advice and almost everyone told me to have sex with him and that him not telling his parents about me was not a big deal. I followed my gut instead of Reddit and decided to wait to have sex. He dumped me a little while after. Since we had fooled around I don't think sex would have made the break-up any worse than it already was, but I wish someone in the Reddit comments told me that him not telling his parents about me after all that time was a bad sign, and telling me to go ahead and have sex with him was the wrong advice after all.

I feel like you should always have the expectation to pay for yourself because you never know how the date plays out but to say you expect the other person to pay because they make more is outright rude.
