Can anyone else also not partake in romance movies/books anymore?

Besides Disney as a kid, I could not tolerate romantic films or novels. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking them, I just find them boring as the main plot, versus a sub plot.

I tried writing a romance novel, but the protagonist was turning into a violent misandrist, so I had to shelve that. I always Mary Sue my characters...

I'm another hate reader hahaha. It's just me, relaxing with a book, and then angrily yelling at the book. I don't have a book rec, but I'll give you my method of finding recs!

Go to goodreads and read the reviews on the book you just read.
Find a review that a) has similar opinions as you and b) has the book shelved.
Look through that person's shelves to see if she has books she reviewed and liked.
Idk if you can search for shelves in general, but if you can then "book boyfriend" is something that tends to have really charming heroes (but not always great heroines unfortunately)

All the cheesy 2000s romcoms I used to love started coming back on Netflix. I watched them recently and was appalled at the pick-me, LVM chasing, cheating and lying that is portrayed as being the norm. My Best Friend’s Wedding and The Wedding Planner for example...

I just got angry that the women acted like they did and then sad that I have acted like that in the past. Girl, he’s just not that into you! But seriously. Everyone is trash in those movies.

Read any book by Lisa Jewell. She writes twisty mysteries or psychological thrillers (which is the boring name I think lol). You won't want to put them down!

Sorry, don't read romance and never have. But I think you might like Lisa's books.

I’m really into romance novels and period dramas. I hate-read them now (and occasionally still swoon).

If it gets too LV though, I quit the book (can’t stand it) so I try to keep it light. It seems like all romance books have at least a few red flags, but there are a lot of them where the hero is very in love and protective and not the broody toxic type.

I’m mostly into historical romance, but I’m sure there is a threat in the romancebook Reddit about healthy relationships if I remember correctly.

I’ve never been able to read romance novels. It sounds sad but I never wanted to have expectations of men being loving and romantic towards women even as a kid because it’s just unrealistic

A new adaptation of Howards End was on PBS recently. I didn't watch it, but it seems like a very lucid story about loves. I was surprised to learn that the original novel was written by a man, his story is very perceptive and honest.

I personally can't handle romance-based plots anymore. It's just too unrealistic.

I've read a romance novel once in my lifetime and I was maybe 15? When it comes to romance movies, I've always found them... bad? They're not realistic. I haven't watched a romance movie in years. Keeps my judgment clear and sound when it comes to men.

I watched Legally Blonde the other day, and that one was surprisingly OK. She had a girl power moment, but her relationship with the Luke Wilson was still odd to me.

Sleepless in Seattle is such a pickme movie. It was so boring and the female lead just pines over a literal stranger's voice, dumping her long-term boyfriend who proposed.

This is why I’m mainly reading mysteries and whodunnit type of books because the romance tropes of LVM and ditzy/klutzy/not-like-other-girl women who don’t put themselves first is very aggravating to me.

Ok. I’m just going to admit my inner nerd here. But one of the few things I’ve found enjoyable lately is Star Trek: Discovery. Most of the main characters are women and they’re kickass! Misogyny went out with the spaceship. And if any race of aliens is sexist they can be blown up. Soooo comforting.

A lot of them romanticize toxic/abusive tactics and groom young, impressionable women into believing that when a guy forces a kiss on her, holds her against her protest, and more it means he loves you.. no... It means he wants to control you.

I have seriously considered it after Bridgerton. It just made me so sad at just how fictitious that really was. A man who cares about you, defends you, is your bestie, and gives you a million orgasms? Ha! In what world? Only the imagination of a woman. Meanwhile that is the minimum a woman offers.

Real men are depraved, period. Pretty much all of them, just on different levels.

I like Scarlet Pimpernel as an HVM, though not sure exactly how realistic :) Prisoner of Zenda. A lot of old cowboy romances by like Zane Grey had, if I remember right, HVM men who cared for and protected the women they carefully courted. Some of Georgette Heyer's heroes (some of them were dreadful rakes i.e. fuccbois that got 'fixed').

I feel like The Hating Game by Sally Thorne was good! I read it a long time ago (before I Joined FDS) so I’m not sure if it aligns with my current values but I remember really loving it ahha
