Fun fact: In the UK, women could vote as far back as the 1700s, so long as they owned property. Which they could do, and many women did. Around 5% to be exact, which was about the same percentage of men at the time.

Well women later lost that right (along with a portion of men) under Queen Victoria during the 1800s.

This is a known, provable fact that most women were against enfranchisement. They found politics dirty and corrupt and held themselves to a higher standard by focusing on social work. 90% women did not want to be corrupted by politics. They felt they’d actually lose power and respectability-which they certainly have. They just as dirty and full of lies as male politicians these days. They tried to have a women’s only mandate vote and only 2% of women showed up for the vote, it won, but after that suffragettes ever after refused to have women only votes. So men actually DID enfranchise women, and regret to this day if our grand parents, and great grand parents could have seen what our social and cultural devastations.

Any way you cut it, women's suffrage exists because legislative bodies consisting of males, voted into office BY males, passed it.

This happened worldwide, and it happened with minimal violence (unless you count WW1 as being somehow part of the suffrage movement). Even more remarkably, many of the men who voted for suffrage had to CHANGE THEIR OWN MINDS in order to do it. Before he was president, Woodrow Wilson was against women's suffrage because he did not believe women were intelligent enough to vote. But this wasn't a bigoted position! Anti-bigotry doesn't mean never having ideas that seem cringeworthy in hindsight- it means being open minded to the notion that something that seems cringeworthy right now is actually correct.

Wilson was open to changing his mind and he did. He looked into how women were voting in places were allowed to vote and allowed EVIDENCE to prove his hypothesis wrong. He then went on to play a major role in making national suffrage happen.

Similar stories exist all over the world.

We don't have to think about this in terms of team boys vs. team girls. I would LIKE to think that had the shoe been on the other foot, and women had the vote sans men, women would have done the same thing. After all, half of the present day descendants of those generous and fair-minded male legislators are women.

But refusing to acknowledge that it happened this way, because of freely given generosity in the spirit of fairness, because of unforced open-mindedness, serves no purpose other than to promote cynicism over gratitude. It serves no purpose other than to convince oneself that people in power never do anything against their own blatant self-interest just because it seems fair and just.
