How widespread is paternity fraud?

It's generally been hard to get an answer to, because when women answer questionnaires anonymously, they can either still still lie or not be sure who the father is and thus answer that it is their husband.

But around 20 years ago that changed.

DNA sequencing became relatively cheap and fast. This meant that scientists could now research hereditary diseases on large population samples. Thousands of men women and children could be used in a study.

But in the beginning the results didn't fit what the scientists had predicted from what they already knew. Well, most of the time it did, but sometimes the results didn't make sense.

You can probably see where this is going.

The reason were disappointing to the male scientists, but the females were not surprised.

Turns out, when the results didn't make sense, it was (of course) because daddy wasn't the father.

Maybe he knew he was a stepdad!

No. Why would he submit a paternal DNA sample if he knew he wasn't the father?

So how widespread is it then?

In various studies in the western world: 10-15%

That's right. Even at the low end, for 1 in 10 children, the man has been tricked into raising the child as his own.

I guarantee that if 1 in 10 children were switched at birth at the hospital, thus making women raise a child not her own, there would be legislation quicker than you can say "paternity fraud". But since the victims are only men here, we should just shut up and pay and count ourselves lucky to be blessed with a loving woman and family.

Test results came back showing they were half sisters. Just so happen that my wife’s sister’s real biological father’s daughter also took test and it linked them on the test results as full sisters. They confronted their mother on it, she denied it for a few weeks until they threatened to share the DNA results with other family members. The Dad didn't want the indignity of further testing as he suffered cystic fibrosis and was infertile. The Dad discovered Wife actually cheated but was willing to kindly move on in peace still be connected with the children and family and not sue.

I don’t think many people realise just how fucked up what that mother did is. This man’s life is completely ruined in an unimaginable way. One of the worst things that can ever happen to a human being is realising that the life they lead was a lie. There isn’t a more devastating realisation that I can personally think of. To have a fundamental part of who you are as a person ripped away from you in such a brutal manner is truly terrifying. Even if he would’ve gotten back the full 5 million and more and the had kids taking his side and showing him love regardless, that still wouldn’t have been enough to repair the deep damage that was done here but for her to continue the lie, for him to get back only a fraction of the money and to have the kids take her side all after being diagnosed with a fatal and horrific disorder is truly unimaginable levels of suffering.
