So, on Wed of last week the company I work for decided to take 'action' on the pay gap. They released the pay info of all employees on their internal website.

After looking it over (we have 243 employees) there didn't seem to be a pay gap in the company. There were some differences in the same department and even within some areas that 'could' be considered the same job.

In my department there are 9 people (IT support) , 5 men and 4 women. All the men do get paid more than the women and at first a few of the women were quite upset but then something strange happened , one of the woman wanted to know why. Here is the reader digest version of the answer she got.

'all the men in this department have more time in the company and more time in the field than all the women. All the men have advanced degrees while only one of the women does. All the men have made it known that they are willing to work weekends and holidays if required (this is formally asked during the annual eval) and none of the women are. They also looked at time off, on average men take 4 days per year (outside our normal annual vacation days) and the women average 12. <-- this is paid time off btw.'

After she got this answer, she spread it around and the mood of the other women (who were pissed off at the beginning) changed drastically. They actually said that they understand why they don't get paid as much as the men and why they don't want to be if it means giving up what they have now. Much more family freedom
