It's kind of a useless stat without a comparison. I wonder how many would murder their enemy if they thought they could get away with it or how many would steal a car. I wonder how many would rig an election or beat someone up.

Below is my take on the study:

Results indicated that participants can be differentiated into three groups based on scores from scales on hypermasculinity and hostility toward women.

If their testing things like 'hypermasculinity' then it seems like a bit of advocacy research to me.

Federal data estimate that about one in five women becomes the victim of sexual assault while in college, most of which is committed by assailants known to the victim (National Center for Injury Prevention and Control 2012).

Does this mean their using the 1 in 5 survey's definition of rape?

This perspective demonstrates stereotypical assumptions many people still hold about rape, considering it to be an act of extreme violence perpetrated by an unknown assailant upon an unsuspecting woman who is willing to defend her sexual purity with her life. Such sentiments contribute to a culture that continues to put at least partial responsibility for sexual assault on the victim and normalizes sexual aggression as part of the male gender role.

Oh god. Just look at what type of study this is.

Specifically, when survey items describe behaviors (i.e., ‘‘Have you ever coerced somebody to intercourse by holding them down?’’) instead of simply label them (i.e., ‘‘Have you ever raped somebody?’’), more men will admit to sexually coercive behaviors in the past and more women will self-report past victimization (Koss 1998).

Hmmm, I wonder why. Also, notice that the citation is Koss who's a known rape apologist and absolute radical feminist.

Callous attitudes, being one area studied, seems like a bullshit definition. What exactly is 'objectify women' meaning here? Is is scientifically verifiable if a woman is 'objectified'? The facts of what happened are scientifically verifiable but whether it's objectification is just a judgment and in the hands of these biased folk, that doesn't bode well.

Overall, while some research points to a relationship between hostility toward women and sexual aggression, most investigations do not differentiate between sexual coercion (i.e., utilizing nonphysical tactics to obtain a nonconsensual sexual encounter), and rape (i.e., utilizing force to obtain nonconsensual sexual encounter).

Well shit. I never would have guessed. Here I was taking those high reported numbers seriously.

Eighty-six male college students received extra credit for their participation.

What an impressive sample size. Importantly, they only end up using 73 according to the results section.

Hostility toward women. The hostility toward women scale (Check 1985) assesses hostile, negative, and resentful feelings participants might hold against women. This scale consists of 22 items, specifically addressing male hostility against females, such as: ‘‘I feel that many women flirt with men just to tease them and hurt them’’ or ‘‘I am easily angered by women.’’ Judgments were made on a 0 (strongly agree) to 6 (strongly disagree) response scale, with higher scores indicating more hostility

Well I wish they'd list the other 20 questions but just this here is fucking ridiculous. I mean, shit. If we were to ask a bunch of feminists analogous questions, imagine the hate we'd come up with.

Hypermasculinity scale. The survey also included the callous sexual attitudes subscale from the hypermasculinity scale (Mosher and Sirkin 1984). This scale consists of three subscales: viewing danger as exciting, regarding violence as manly, and endorsement of callous sexual attitudes

Okay, depending on what they specifically ask (referencing the 1/5 survey so much is a bad sign), this doesn't sound bad.

In addition, for the purpose of this study, the key points of having labels (rape) versus behavioral descriptions of sexual aggression is completely addressed with this scale.

I'm not actually sure what they mean by this. Can anyone help me out?

Here are the actual numbers. I checked the study hoping for the actual questions and those aren't here. How did they actually phrase this? Did they make them check a box saying "I would force a woman to have sex with me" or did they use behavioral descriptions of feminist nonsense?

There was one participant who indicated that he would rape a woman, but denied any likelihood to use force to obtain intercourse. Because we did not know how to make sense of this answer and could not exclude a random error (e.g., careless marking), this case was dropped from the analysis. Cases with missing data for the dispositional measures or intentions were also dropped. This left us 73 cases for analysis which all fell into one of these groups: endorsing no intentions of sexual assault (n = 49), endorsing intentions to use force but denying intentions to rape a woman (n = 13), and endorsing both (n = 10).

To me it looks like this means the questions, however they were asked, were confusing as shit. 15% of the sample was so confused that they couldn't even finish the survey. Somehow I doubt that the remaining 85% wasn't confused. Many of them probably just went along with it because extra credit and not looking stupid.

The present study serves as initial investigation to examine how respondents who endorse behavioral descriptions of rape but deny rape when labeled as such outright differ from those who self-report intentions to rape and those who do not endorse any sexual coercion

Does it prove this? Or does it prove that there are definitions of rape other than the feminist ones? I really wish the study released the questions they'd asked these guys. Where's the survey for me to see?

These results are informative because knowing ahead of time that a particular subgrouping of men exhibit higher levels of callous sexual attitudes may suggest that males in this group are more likely to commit rape without labeling it as such.

Let's discuss the "no consequences" part.

The reason rape is bad is that there are consequences, for the victim and for the rapist.

Rape is a horrible outrage to the victim. (I'm being very brief here, but the outrage is not a brief one). The rape victim feels a loss of control, uncertainty about what pregnancy and diseases their body may have to encounter, and the undeniable outrage of having been forced to submit their intimate parts unwillingly. There's the physical pain of the actual acts and whatever violence the rapist did to make the actual penetration "possible". Then there's the permanent fear of a repeat of the events. These feelings, ptsd, flashbacks for the rest of their lives, and the feelings following those flashbacks, are consequences tht are rightly to be avoided. and the best way to avoid them is to NOT inflict them, by NOT RAPING PEOPLE.

Yeah, the rapist has consequences too. maybe a brief feeling of sexual release and empowerment. Hopefully, a long term jail sentence, shame, embarrassment.

But what if rape did none of those things? What if rape did less harm than,say, farting in general direction of a stranger two blocks away?

THAT would be a rape with little consequence, but not one with "no" consequences.

If you removed all consequences, (including the slightest inconvenience a rape victim may feel at having been sexually victimized) you remove all reason to avoid rape.

The relevant question was:

Obviously the question was posed in a hypothetical "no consequences for anyone involved". This is the same as asking them if they'd play a real life version of a video game but after you shoot someone you press the reset button and no one is harmed.

No, it doesn't.

The data sheet is from 2012 (http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/sv-datasheet-a.pdf), but the data draws on a report written in 2011 (http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/nisvs_report2010-a.pdf) . That report notes that the study was not specifically done in relation to women in college but was:

about [the] experiences of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence among non-institutionalized English and/ or Spanish-speaking women and men aged 18 or older in the United States. (Black, et al. 2012: 1)

Even the 2012 data sheet they cite says:

In a nationally representative survey of adults: Nearly 1 in 5 (18.3%) women and 1 in 71 men (1.4%) reported experiencing rape at some time in their lives.

And also:

In a study of undergraduate women, 19% experienced attempted or completed sexual assault since entering college.

So note again that the first quote is for both men as well as women and specifically that they are not college women exclusively. The second one is about women, and of college age, but conflates attempted with completed. While an attempted rape could be as terrifying as a completed one, it does not take a genius to realise that these are researchers who will be defining attempted using a very wide range of criteria (TBC).

This leads me to think that the authors, two of whom are hold doctoral degrees apparently, are sloppy and incompetent researchers - and exactly the same goes for the editors of the journal Violence and Gender.

And speaking of sloppiness, the 1 in 5 statistic itself is also highly contested, due to the construction of the survey questions - in particular look at the badly worded question here:

When you were drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent, how many people ever… had vaginal sex with you? By vaginal sex, we mean that {if female: a man or boy put his penis in your vagina} {if male: a woman or girl made you put your penis in her vagina}?

Notice how drunk, high and drugged are discrete from being passed out and yet have been included in the same question.

How on Earth can this paper lay claim for credibility when the first sentence of the first paragraph is so completely riddled with bullshit like this?

What do you mean with 'drunk'? Because it seems to me that with "drunk" you mean "drunken behavior". And within "drunken behavior" you seem to include behavior like verbally propositioning someone for sex that you wouldn't have propositioned sober.

In other words: "you cannot give consent whilst drunk" That's what you want to say with that.

If that is what you mean, why don't you actually say that? Why do you feel like you have to maintain so much plausible deniability in order to be convincing?

I'd say using one's uterus and child to cripple a man financially for life is worse than being raped in most instances, but because one we allow by the law and one we do not the former is fine while the latter is horrid, when both should be illegal. As someone who was raped by a homeless woman I let stay at my apartment I'd rather have been raped than have to pay 50% of my income for 18 years to a woman who is under no obligation to spend it on the child and be imprisoned if I'm not. An interesting thing to note, despite being raped, if my rapist had gotten pregnant my life would essentially be over because I'd be obligated to pay for an unwanted child I can't afford. The only other options being forgo a highly desirable biological function that is hard to live without (though men who are not the biological father have been made to pay child support) or give any woman the power to destroy my life simply because we had sex if she chooses to sabotage your condoms, lie about her birth control etc. Furthermore, these studies don't get fruitful results because something like this will never exist in reality. I'm tired of society pretending like men are solely these evil despicable beings when it's clear that women can be and are just as horrible as men, but society is more willing to look the other way, and only focus on the destructive things men do while ignoring the equally destructive things that women do often with the consent of their's and society's conscience.

Anyway sorry for long quote, but just something interesting to put here. However I must add that I'm quite upset with victims trying to use their status to bring down other victims, it's quite sad.

Yeah , social science is not really science.

There are so many points a long the way in the collection of data that you could inject your bias unknowingly or out and out game the system.

Also there is the failure of language, the interpretation of the question and words they used what is "drunk", three beers and she is more relaxed and receptive, still completely aware of what she is doing, but too drunk to drive a car , fly a plane or do surgery .

The attempts to hide the words sexual assault, also makes questions more ambiguous and prone to get false positives .

Almost any healthy sexual would be falsely labeled a rapist by a survey such as that . had sex with a drunk girl ? Yup one girlfriend that was about the middle of her drunk o meter. always was randy .

use force / ignored her protests? Yup , I can tell difference between a woman being playful and coy and one making a flat out no / refusal. Overcome their verbal resistance and they become enthusiastic participants once again. For some women it is a turn on that you desire them so much that you refuse to take no for an answer, other women it is like it is as if they have to put up a token resistance to relieve themselves of blame for engaging in sex , ie that they are not a slut or having pre-marital sex, or that they are a good girl.

It is almost as if that these survey makers and those who interpret the data, have never had sex before , because the sure as shit don't understand it
