Normally the first consultation is free. At the very least have the divorce go through a mediator. Perfect world you’d have divorce settled by a mediator and then have your own lawyer look over that agreement.

YES! This shouldn't be considered optional. Just for the sake of formality, hand everything to somebody who knows exactly what everything is about and when it comes to the divorce being finalised, made LEGALLY BINDING then you bet your backside you want everything to be in perfect order and without quick changes or surprises that could end up costing you a fortune.

A lawyer is not an expense, it's an investment!

Always have a lawyer look it over, even if they are representing you in a limited capacity. You don't want to have anything pop up in the future that you agreed to in ignorance.

Not in every case. But where the marital estate is significant, there are custody, support or alimony issues, or a power and information disparity between the parties - it’s typically better to have a lawyer. If she’s licensed and doesn’t practice family law, it is better for her too.

Tbh it depends. Usually, almost always, yes. However if you have no kids and no assets and the deal looks fair, I mean, I don’t know I could envision a reason you may not go that route.

If you have kids or assets you need a lawyer.

Then ask yourself if it is wise to trust your wife to deal with you fairly.

I'm going through a divorce as well. I have a lawyer, retained mine as soon as she filed! At first everything with the divorce was amicable. Then suddenly she started wanting more and more and shifting more and more of the debt to me!

At least I had a lawyer who could walk me through everything. The best case scenario is that we would remain amicable, compromise and have an agreement and the lawyers would file the final decree. Things quickly got nasty a bit later. So yes, get a lawyer.

Yes, get a lawyer, even if it's just for consultation. I'm recently divorced and we were pretty amicable for the most part. We had a lawyer that she found just to process the paper work for us. However, I did have a lawyer that I consulted throughout the process and I can't recommend it enough. She told her lawyer the parts of our situation that helped her cause so the draft decree was not right for our situation. My lawyer heled me out a lot by letting me know how the laws in my state applied to our situation. Considering the fact that you're divorcing someone with a law degree you should get a lawyer immediately.

The situation matters. If you can mediate and lose less than 50%, do it. If not, get a lawyer.
