100% all my romance novels feature simply men who demonstrate caring and emotional intelligence. How radical

How taboo! How radical!

Any recommendations?? 😂

You have to ask, who do these "unrealistic expectations" benefit?

Romcoms and romance novels give hope to women, which results in them... tolerating misbehavior from men and reading true love into situations where none exists. Insofar as these forms of media are inaccurate, they are inaccurate in ways that benefit men, because without that propaganda of hope and decency fewer of us would be giving real men chances at all. At other times romance media expresses and reinforces fantasies of women with internalized misogyny, to the point that it glorifies financial and sexual abuse.

And porn? Porn depicts male abuse of women and tells lies about how it affects us. It reduces male empathy toward women, increases their tendency to believe rape myths, gives men abuse templates to apply to women they know, creates a false sense of abundance, makes normal bodies seem abnormal, acts as an expression of male resentment and their ideal sex hierarchy... it's effectively hate speech.

Gosh, it's almost like ALL the propaganda serves them more than us.

Ah yes, our unrealistic standards like wanting a man to be kind to us. Tender, respectful. Listens when we speak. Gets up off the couch. Takes us on dates. Enjoys doing things with us and wants to be around us even when we're not having sex.

vs porn's standards of "wanting women to be enthusiastic about their own torture".

Dr Anna Lembke does amazing work regarding addition but her conflating romance novels to "acceptable porn for women" so that she can have her porn addict patients open up will not ever not disgust me. Not only it's ignorant of the realities of porn, when she compares so she can win brownie points from her patients, she misses the point why pornography is and should be more shameful.

[–]Some-Air9442FDS Newbie 150 points151 points152 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

So, uh, there’s a gigantic difference: a large amount of what porn shows would literally land a man in prison.

Most of what romance novels portray is quite pleasant by comparison.

[–]The_Cat_EmpressFDS Newbie 97 points98 points99 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Imagine if men were arrested for choking, slapping and basically r*ping women for the sake of porn...Because you're right! These men should be in prison!

The male protags in the few romance novels I read were problematic, sure, but I don't recall a brutal forced deepthroating scene...🤢

[–]ello-mottoFDS Apprentice 69 points70 points71 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Man chokes and slaps woman...

Society: "WHAT A CRUEL AND SICK MAN."

... in the bedroom during sex.

Society: "Oh okay then, continue! :)👍"

Porn and sex positivity have fried logic in society. 🙄

They should be arrested, forced to build women’s shelters and made to pay restitution.

[–]WorkaholicPartyFDS Newbie 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly, just don't have the time to thoroughly enumerate why porn really can't be compared to romance novels and I assume women here already know why!

[–]2340000FDS Apprentice 110 points111 points112 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Does she really? I'm not surprised.

I'm conflicted about both perspectives because porn doesn't give men unrealistic expectations🤔. Porn is a reflection of society's violent reality: men rape children, traffick women and girls, puncture organs in the name of pleasure, fantasize about incest, and fetishize racial minorities.

That happens in real life. We can discuss body types, but that's a reflection of men's pedophilia. Meaning it's not unrealistic for a 10 year old.

In regards to romance novels, most male protagonists are misogynists too. I used to read a lot in my heyday, and I haven't come across one novel healthy enough for women to consume.

[–]Inspection-CriticalFDS Newbie 53 points54 points55 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fanfic usually recreates the same fucked up dynamics too. It's rare to come across fic in any fandom where there's no misogyny, rape, or emotional-abuse-cosplaying-as-flirting.

The Aliens fandom is a notable exception.

Cool title.

[–]WorkaholicPartyFDS Newbie 45 points46 points47 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not really talking about body types and realistic expectations. But to your point, romance novels are mostly trash written so women can be convinced and soothed while they accept adopting submissive character traits when confronted with the male lead character. It's basicly a cope for women trying to convince themselves that there's sexy misogyny out there. I still find them vile in their own right but they can't be compared to pornography they way Lambke likes to do. Yeah she might have been addicted to romance novels and maybe her methods to fight one addiction are the same on most other addictions but she can't say "romance novels are socially sanctioned and acceptable pornography for women". First of all, they are not protected from ridicule (for the wrong reasons) and there's a reason they are not as bad and less shameful than porn. She probably says that so her male patients can open up quicker and it makes for a more successful therapy, nonetheless she's wrong.

[–]bioqueen53FDS Newbie 76 points77 points78 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've been reading romance novels recently, and while some have some problrmatic tropes, at least the men are generous, compassionate lovers. And she ditches her gaslighting bf for someone who treats her way better.

[–]FluffandRaincloudsRuthless Strategist 166 points167 points168 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

On point. Sure, there are unrealistic romance fantasies of a man having infinite expendable income, riding in on a white steed, mind reading, etc. But what women want from said novels is to feel wanted, to be seen, and a man to love them for who they are. The largest flaws of romance novels and movies, IMO, are the nice guy and bad boy tropes, and the other garden varieties of LVM/NVM behavior leading to a good partner. I hate "banter" when the man negs a woman, and the male-catered "romance movies" where Seth Rogan is the love interest of someone like Megan Fox.

Another flaw of the romance genre I noticed: women who read romance types of books and such, IMO, generalize the good traits of the male protagonist onto their LVM/NVM. It is cognitive dissonance, as it is an overly generous projection. Example scenario: "Aww, they have a cute relationship where they can laugh spending time on the couch. Just like us." (Meanwhile, in the same scenario, her man ONLY spends time on the couch. Day to day, he barely grunts a word to her, and only laughs when they watch a show together or he's gaming. But of course he looks mildly annoyed/disgusted when she laughs or makes a comment on a show she likes). If a woman is pickme-brainwashed, she may be struggling with the knowledge deep down her man does not like her (or women) as a person, but lying to herself he cares "deep down." When women do notice this discrepancy and speak up ("gee, I wish he said something nice about me") the partner, friends, and family tell her to stop being "so picky" and "it's just a movie."

What porn teaches is rapey, often violent, mechanical, cold physicality catering to odd positions for visual titillation. It is not about finding a partner genuinely attractive but literally reducing a a person to body parts, fetishes, and unrealistic acts. Not what actually feels good. It allows for racist and violent fetishes, yet somehow people who watch it are more "enlightened" in our culture 🤯🤯🤯

Imagine watching someone take an initial bite of food you lovingly prepared, but only that. With an undercurrent obligation. And the process of them actually enjoying the food via all senses is "worthless" to you. Maybe they're not making the "right" noises or chewing in a way that shows they "enjoy it" in your mind. ☹That is what porn is like.. It is sick and twisted, because porn is only visual and encourages rhe viewer to mindlessly consume, and discourages deriving pleasure from a partner's pleasure.

Also, viewed or acted-out porn scenarios are a recipe for a woman's zero arousal or complete "ick." Good luck using the "special techniques" you learned from porn, Bradley! Sure, you can blame your woman for being "frigid" (because she didn't like how you copied a video). Anything that helps you avoid the reality you are the walking equivalent of a cold shower. 🙄🤔

Unlike romance stories, porn encourages men to be dissatisfied with their partners. Porn is associated with (studied!) instances of men feeling less aroused by their partner (erectile dysfunction), unhappiness with their partners' appearance, violence, belief in rape myths, and decreased gray matter in the brain.

Porn robs people of the pleasure of building sexual tension, an electric touch brushing someone's hand, being enticed by their scent, and wanting to be intimate with someone in a tender, loving, spiritual way. Porn reduces real-life partners to sad recreations of a fantasy, such as a fast food toy compared to an actual movie. Who actually wants to be someone's blow up doll consolation prize, when a stupid internet video supply is the golden standard? I sincerely believe porn is a health pandemic ruining our society because of this, as we see pornsick men behaving very similar to alcoholics and addicts of other things.

When men compare romance stories to porn, I think they know deep down it is bullshit. They just cling onto any excuse they can.. they hate being called out for low effort. Imagine hating unattainable, desirable women, but simultaneously hating desirable women who give them a chance (but LVM self-hatred makes her reciprocity seem "less desirable). LVM and NVM choose to self-sabotage to the point of hurting people around them just as much, or more IMO.

[–]cml678701FDS Newbie 78 points79 points80 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I love your paragraph about porn robbing you of sexual tension, and that is so true! That‘s just one reason I prefer to wait to have sex. I want to know the guy wants to have sex with me because of who I am, not because he wants to act out something he saw in porn. Heck, even having sex with a guy because he loves my appearance is better than that, as sad as it is! I don’t want to be a vehicle for them to act out whatever they saw in their favorite porn this month. Sorry if that makes me a “prude!” I couldn’t care less!

Also, it’s ironic that we’re “prudes” because we want the best possible sex!

[–]FluffandRaincloudsRuthless Strategist 37 points38 points39 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Prudes united 😎

[–]ObscureoblivionFDS Newbie 61 points62 points63 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s the blatant depravity of pornography that really gets me. The fact that men sometimes even feel guilt after watching it, but yet don’t have the will power to pay attention to what that guilt could possibly mean.

[–]FluffandRaincloudsRuthless Strategist 40 points41 points42 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They are so disingenuous, they pretend it's the same as religious people getting feelings of shame for random sexual feelings (not saying that it is right, it is a shame and just natural biology). There is a huge difference between accepting natural urges/fantasies and literally brainwashing yourself to be aroused by more and more extreme scenarios. Men who want pornified scenarios act like they are just super high testosterone or super sexual, when their neckbeard aesthetic, inability to be fully aroused/erect around a woman, and need for intense imagination during intercourse begs otherwise. 🤏

I definitely agree with you. Most romance novels do not depict healthy, loving and equal relationships. It teaches young women, especially teenage girls to put men on a pedestal and romanticise subpar man and relationships.

It's so gross! I remember so many cringeworthy dates where the men told me they really believed whatever rough, lumbering, bumbling thing people did in porn were actually pleasurable to women. No Jake, if you touch a woman like you're using a nail scrubber, you will have a very bad time.

[–]hushpuppyebtFDS Newbie 48 points49 points50 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are tons of the romance novels I’ve read contain LV leads, include degradation masked as kink, and are actually written by men using women’s names as nomme de plume. I found that out when I was 16 and explained so much. Now I google the author before taking a book home with me and that usually helps, but let’s not forget the ultimate abuse fantasy, 50 shades.

[–]WhoopassDietFDS Newbie 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yo, don't equate romance novels with romcoms. There is some hugely toxic shit in romcoms.

If she doesn't like you, try harder? I'd she says no, follow her home? If you can't communicate, bribe her with things? Yeah no thanks.

British romance author Barbara Cartland was definitely all about FDS. I watched an interview with her because I was confused why they hyped up Jackie Collins and made Barbara the bad person. In this video she talks about pornography @ 3:00.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNNfZ0xeU-g

That’s what I’ve been trying to say for years! Are those expectations really unrealistic or are they just completely normal things that women should expect from men who truly love and respect them? Women always go out of their way for those they love and they don’t have to be asked to do as such. Personally, in all the times I’ve loved someone, I went out of my way to do every special thing I could think of and I only wanted happiness in return.
