Alright ladies: I. Need. Your. Help.

TL;DR: Divorce strategy post.

Question: We always say block and delete here at FDS but what if that person is legally your spouse? The blocking and deleting should have happened long ago (before marriage) but I didn’t know FDS back then :-/

So, what the hell do I do to divorce the cheater I was with for almost a decade who launched his career off the back of my loyalty, support, & unpaid labor?

He makes 8x my income. He controls all stock, retirement, & crypto accounts. All cars are in his name. We have no legal separation agreement. He is charming but incredibly dishonest. His equally dishonest father owns a cash business I fear my spouse could use to dissolve assets.

We have been separated for two years living separately but tried to “make it work” for a year. I live in a tiny apartment with a roommate, work & go to grad school.

I’m up to my eyeballs in stress and work and terrified out of my mind. I feel so SCAMMED: out of my youth, labor, body, emotional health, & career prospects. Now, I’m here to get what is mine.

How do I get ahead as the spouse with a lower income, less information, and less free time?

What I’ve done for myself so far:*

—Year and a half of therapy

—grad school to be less broke someday

—I read this sub every damn day to remind myself why I’m leaving

—reading books recommended here

--1 consult a year ago with a very pick-me female attorney. (Part of the reason this has dragged on so long—she basically said I didn’t deserve much & there wasn’t even a case. I’ve now learned that isn’t true.)

—signed up for free legal aid help this week

—attempted to covertly get updated financial info on him but can’t find ANYTHING—everything I assume is on his locked computer and phone.

—documented and saved everything showing his lies, suspicious behaviors, important information, etc.

—I’ve been playing nice to try to get access to resources: his apartment & stuff. He has given me stuff to sell online which I said was for tuition but I’m trying to save a lot for an attorney. One consultation is between $250-350.

*For anyone reading this, here are mistakes I have made:*

—making my intentions to divorce known without having everything I needed

—confronting him on his lies, etc: just don’t. It gives them the heads up to hide stuff & change passwords

—thinking “nice” or “fair”: there’s no such thing with men. Get your bag and get out sis. Do what you gotta do.

—giving second chances: you’re wasting your time and youth.

—not getting a legal separation agreement right away: I have not received spousal support and also lack of a legal agreement cost me big time with taxes.

—telling other people: don’t tell anyone anything. Don’t bad mouth him. Don’t tell them you’re trying to work anything out. Don’t tell them you’re going to take half of everything. Don’t try to validate yourself at all. (Some people might push back on not bad-mouthing him. True, I don’t believe in giving an abuser the privilege of your silence on their behalf, but every word you say is a chance to alert him of your intentions.)
