I agree with her points. It is a fine balance between venting and let the hate take over your life. Women need to vent, but there needs to be a balance. I am sick of talking about men all the time too, or this vicious cycle of focusing on all the shit.

Yup, this is what I have said all along and I have made a thread a long time ago about it. Stay away from them, it's pointless to dwell in anything that has to do with them. Men don't give a fuck about us, put problems, our issues, what happens to us. They don't care. The sooner women realise this, the better. Don't bother with them, ladies. Live YOUR OWN life, be happy, be self-fulfilled, be whole, it's absolutely possible to do that without any man. Stay away.

My favorite philosophical theme--- the potential usefulness of "ha.te," rage and outrage.

The woman in the video speaks well and means well and makes some great points. But I don't have the same view of so-called "negative" emotions. I don't know if she's recommending "playing it cool" (useful) or talking about actually skipping steps to acheive the end result of using cold passion to fuel change. I don't think it's possible to skip the "outrage" step, at least not in my experience.

If you care and are not a sociopath, the only way out of the jittery, wild-eyed outrage phase is through. There's an enlightened, humane old theory in psychoanalysis called "positive disintegration"-- basically that you're going to periodically get overwhelmed and fall apart in the process of acheiving genuine individuality.

A veteran activist I know once said emotions are just colors in a paint box. None are good or bad, healthy or unhealthy. It only matters what picture you paint with them.

Women tend to be far less prone to paint gory destructive "pictures" with rage than men so if any group wants to Zen-out and wet blanket their rage, let it be men. I find my fury necessary to get launched into constructive action at times so I'm keeping it. Fury can be fun. I don't even think of rage as an emotion per se, but as an evolutionary backup fuel pack spurring action when under threat. But since rage is popularly called an "emotion," I'll accept the catagory.

Anyway, after fighting the good fight against misogyny since age 10 (I was on TV at that age for the NOW org and was attacked in school for the next 5 years because of it), I feel like I'm finally becoming more of an "emotional athlete."

It's like my wiring can better handle hot "emotions." In any case, it takes a fuck of a lot to make my hands shake or make me lose sleep and that's only if it's personal-- a threat to my kids, loved ones or personal safety. I still might get knocked off center by political events or encounters but use rage to shift into gallows humor, action and consensus building.

Shifting into "sang froid" is still not a sense of apathy. I still tend to burn hot and the people I admire most do as well. It's great for circulation. I still relate to the outrage of people standing up against injustice for the first time. I don't urge anyone to dampen their passion, just to channel it and be effective with the optics. If a deadpan shrug throws off opponents, use it. If a fiery retort is more effective, use that.

There's a wonderful depiction of the journey from "hot mess" to justice warrior in the film Citizen X about the hunt for a Russian Soviet era serial killer. An apathetic military commander aids the investigation by an emotionally strained and traumatized lead detective. By the end, the detective learns how to hide emotion and navigate politics to get things done from the commander, while the commander catches passion from the detective.
