If he gets on his soapbox about it, dump him. Block him. Delete his #. He's trying to intellectualize treating you like shit on a day where you're supposed to feel extra loved and appreciated. On a day where all the other women get jewelry, teddy bears, chocolates, beautiful bouquets, dinner, etc. You get his excuses instead. Men will whine like "V-day is a capitalistic cash-grab invented by Hallmark blah blah blah" when they clearly have no problem blowing money on weed, gaming consoles, sneakers, onlyfans, etc. Or if they start talking about "We don't need to celebrate v-day because I love you everyday" while he treats you like an afterthought 24/7. Same guy who will tell you he doesn't want to "put a label on it" because "we know what we are." Just finding any excuse to shame women for wanting anything remotely nice.

Just a small edit from somebody with anxiety exacerbated by crowds: if he doesn’t do something for you for, not on, VDay. My late husband and I would always celebrate a few days before or after. We could have a nice, romantic dinner, and I wouldn’t feel overwhelmed and overstimulated.

My then-boyfriend took me to a restaurant (my suggestion…in retrospect he should’ve taken initiative and planned this out himself), our bill was like $120 which apparently to him is a lot so he asked me to pay a portion of it. Such a disaster.

Edit: lol, some guy responded calling me entitled and that $120 is “very expensive.” Yeah, if you’re a teenager working minimum wage maybe. $120 isn’t jack.

My male colleague consulted with me and other women at the office last year about whether to get his new girl a gift (he said it might be too soon after two months). His buddies were all saying not to. His gift ended up being very thoughtful and appropriate and I’m glad he did give it to her.

Even if you have shunned it in the past (old pickme habits), simply let the man know that it's something you'd like to celebrate this year.

This. Valentines Day is such an easy-to-use vetting tool so take full of advantage of it, ladies!

Did he go cheap on you? Did he just barely pull something together at the last minute? Was the gift/gesture just way below what you would expect? Was there no real thought behind his gift?

After living through many Valentine's Days, single, taken, whatever, I learned that whether or not you think this is a great holiday, it's a FANTASTIC way to check the scrotes in your life and I can tell you that if a scrote fails to make you feel special on this day or gives you minimal effort ---> absolutely nothing good will come out of this relationship for you.

You know in your gut if the guy isn't meeting your standards by the way he approaches this day.
