I avoid the atheist label because of guys like him. It's actually more accurate to say I'm not interested in religion at all, and not even interested in atheism as a concept. I just don't care about any of it.

Women understand and respect this. But I haven't met one fucking man who will leave the topic alone even though I've just said I DON'T CARE and am not interested in talking about it. I bet you anything they'd respect my opinion if I were a man.

I can't stand men who want to debate, argue and "own" women all the time. It's such an LVM trait imo. I feel like they get a kick out of seeing women riled up or upset. I want peace in my relationships, not conflict.

Most online atheist communities just provide a space for mediocre nihilists to feel intellectually superior over religious people. This man blew up on you because he can’t handle having his opinions challenged. Sure sign he probably belongs to one of those echo chambers.

Yes, “atheist” men are unpleasant and funnily enough have the exact same arrogance and pathological need to browbeat, as certain types of fundamentalist religious men. It’s almost as if men just get super fixated on an ideology and it becomes their entire identity and get in so deep they can’t separate the subjective from the objective.

That said, there are plenty of sweet, kind, high value religious men, as well as men that just don’t believe in God. But the brand of atheism men have is an ugly worldview I find disturbing, like they do not entertain the possibility of anything mysterious and transcendental: ie love is just chemicals tricking you, there is nothing noble or beautiful in the human spirit, everything that happens has a mundane rational explanation, etc. I’m not implying irreligious or non theists think like that, you don’t have to have religion or faith to have a sense of the divine or the eternal or spirituality.

I’m not religious at all and I’ve noticed a HUGE amount of misogyny within the atheist community for years now. Honestly, I’d rather be with a moderately religious man (of any religion) than an hardcore atheist because of the sexism within the atheist/agnostic community.

Omg I feel you! Those self-proclaimed atheists seem to think they are "smarter" than others for not believing in God. They just want us to tell them that they are woke, intelligent, etc for not believing in God 🙄🙄 I dont believe in God. But I dont think Christians are "dumb" for having faith either.

I agree. I’m not religious and have no problem with people who are in a general sense but there are some people who are so anti-religion that they make it a goal in life to insult religion/religious things at every turn. It’s like, give it a rest.

Yes and no. I'm an atheist and so I only dated atheists (I really don't like any religion due to my upbringing). I consider myself an agnostic atheist - meaning I don't KNOW if there's any kind of higher power, but I have rejected all the ones I've heard about.

I've met some insufferable douches, but I'm also kind of an insufferable douche when it comes to religion and spirituality so it's kind of fine. Once you talk about religion a few times with your atheist friends, it doesn't come up in every conversation. We just don't talk about it besides a yearly "Oh look what the dumb governor is doing to women's rights because he wants to live in a theocracy!" lol.

Background: Have you ever watched Jesus Camp or Kidnapped for Christ? That's my religious experiences. If you watched Jesus Camp and thought "that's fucked up" well - the textbooks you see the kids learning from are the same ones I did, and I went to a bunch of camps just like that. All the people I grew up with were brainwashed and I do mean brainwashed. All of them married at 18/20 and have kids that are in middle or high school now. Some of my friends were also in the quiverfull movement. Look that up if you want nightmares. Basically because of this I immediately reject all notion of Christianity and any traditional monotheistic god...

I completely agree. I’m not religious, but I never get along with those edgy know it all atheists. I wouldn’t want to date a man who makes fun of religious people, uses the “I’ve never seen God, therefore he cant exist” argument, and refers to God as a “flying spaghetti monster”. So disrespectful and arrogant.

I dated two self proclaimed atheists, one who was an “optimistic nihilist”. I don’t subscribe to any particular religion but I suppose you could say I’m spiritual, empathetic and in tune with my emotions. These atheist men loved to act like feelings are invalid. They only look at problems logically. Emotions aren’t always logical and if you get in a fight with them they shut you down because they refuse to see things from any perspective but their own. They weren’t in tune with their emotions at all, no romance whatsoever, it was Almost pathological! It’s very emotionally unfulfilling to date such men

FYI: spiritual abuse is something that exists. If I'm remembering correctly, it's anything that includes leveraging spirituality or religion to hurt or control another person.

There's more of it than people realize. It's another avenue for utter (insert your favorite curse word here) people to hurt others and feel morally superior for doing it.

I realize the thread is about not dating atheists (or dudes that use their newfound religious viewpoint as an opportunity to feel intellectually superior) but it's another aspect to all this that needs to be watched carefully in friendships and dating relationships. It sounds like there's a lot of people that have dealt with this in some form or fashion, even if they don't realize what it was they experienced.

Yeah, I don't believe in a deity myself but atheist men (like most men, religious or not) are so self-righteous and think they are intellectually superior to anyone who thinks differently, and often to people who have the same beliefs as well. Furthermore they tend to think that "right" and "wrong" are completely subjective and that they themselves are the ultimate judges of what is good and bad, and use that to justify their own shitty behavior towards other people. Just avoid. What's funny is that it takes the same amount of faith to believe with certainty that there is no god as it does to believe that there is a god, but hey, that's none of my business. 💅

I am an atheist myself, and I do find that there seems to be an online cohort of atheist men who take atheism as a sort of ideology. It's nothing of the sort. It's a lack of belief. That's it. The end. Period. But, as others have said, they form an identity around it and amusingly also combine it with other viewpoints, like being fedora-tipping libertarians.

This particular contingent of young men use their lack of faith to browbeat the unsuspecting and unassuming. I wish they'd put their energies to better use, such as by advocating the Catholic Church to apologise for the thousands of women burnt at the stake, or by pushing back on religious tenets being pushed in school and law. But it's easier for them to just be bullies.
