I like Pollack's work. I'm third generation artist and I've always had to contend with the dichotomy of shitty men who sometimes make great art.

I love Margaret Atwood's quote, "Wanting to know a writer [artist] because you like their work is like wanting to know a duck because you like paté." It's a cute quip and generally apt but I moreover agree with the harsher view of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich that assholes and sadists tend to be mediocre fakes at best. That's the main takeaway of his grumpy memoir Testimony about surviving under Stalinism. My favorite first chapter line of anything I've read is in that book: "I hate Toscanini." Shostakovich then goes on in detail to explain what a sadist and overrated conductor Toscanini was, then describes the time he (Shostakovich) fired a famous violinist who expressed a sweaty fixation on sexual torture.

Shostakovich was completely secular but had observed that true talent and sadism couldn't exist sumultaneously in the same person. Shostakovich also effectively debunks the enduring myth that culture vulturing Nazi leaders like Goering (or was it Goebbels?) was a true musical afficionado. The composer doubted they could discern good music from pure shit but just used culture to spread influence and image manage.

All the same, to me, the confusing exeptions to this are artists with severe personality disorders involving deeply compartmentalized, nearly separate "selves." Pollack was a quasi schizoid fourth stage alcoholic. I tend to think the art came from one if his many fractured personalities. I also think his work would have been better if he wasn't such a dangerous train wreck and he probably knew it.

Another enfuriating example is the work of Roman Polanski, whom I despise and think should have been in prison for the last 45 or so years. I agree with those who boycott his work because no work of art and no achievement is worth even one second of suffering by the most obscure victim.

But here's the rub: no filmaker has ever depicted the diabolical webs that abusers and their enablers spin to control, silence and paralyze prey better than Polanski. His films Chinatown, Tess and Rosemary's Baby are schizophrenic confessions of the tactics employed by predators and abusers of power and the depth of male depravity.

When I worked as an advocate for dv survivors, I came across theories that might explain the dichotomy of the semi-split abuser a bit, but without any arguments for amnesty for these perps. According to Canadian criminologist and dv researcher Donald Dutton, who spent decades studying convicted batterers and partner murderers in prison settings (where Dutton thinks these men belong) , many batterers tend to have something akin to dissociative personality disorder-- though not quite. Virtually all internalized the abuse they witnessed or experienced from violent male role models. They become the worst of what they experienced. But at one time they were genuine victims themselves and retain an inner "victim self."

The inner victim self may seem deceptively credible to the extent it once was real. These abusers may display more interest in underdog perspectives, including women's views, than average men. They may display what seems like real empathy, might cry over landmine victims half a world away and can express "woke" views with uncanny depth.

But like the light from a long dead star reaching earth, these displays from the victim self are figments or echos and mean exactly nothing. The central, organizing personality is actually evil and the victim self only acts in service to it. They know this too which is why batterers are notoriously skilled at evading consequences and hiding theur true nature. But to the extent they believe in their own sincerity when in that bleeding heart good guy "mode," you can imagine it's like a vacation from the stress of feeling like a piece of shit, plus the credible-seeming depth of "good character" is great for drawing in more victims.

Another chilling aspect of this is that these men are generally not clinical sociopaths. They really do have depth of feeling (from which may even spring strangely honest art and philosophical expression) but their empathy is terrifyingly selective.

Polanski was able to use the work generated from his "victim self" (which caught fire to the degree that it broke real ground and revealed underrepresented truths about the victim experience) in order to gain fame and power by which he could entrap more victims and evade consequences. How's that for diabolical?

Again, I still think Polanski's work should be boycotted but it could also be studied from the vantage point of predatory schism.

I took an art history course and the professor focused on his wife and her amazing art and contributions. How she was overshadowed by everyone's focus on the man. She was an amazing artist in her own right, but people don't talk about that because of how sexist society was and still is.
