As a photographer I’ve seen a lot (the majority in my area) of local male photographers who want to shoot “fetish, kink, bondage, and boudoir.” The male gaze has never been so pronounced or apparent than in their work. It is so distasteful. I feel horrible for the women with low enough self esteem to allow themselves to take their clothes off and be photographed by these creepy men. The photos make the women look awkward and “fake in a porny way.” Which makes it clear that these men spend much of their time cementing their ideas of women in pornography. The contrast with boudoir photos (even just women in clothing) taken by local female photographers is astounding. The female photographers are actually pay attention to their subjects and their body language. There’s so much soulless mimicry in male photographer’s photos of women. I would almost always choose a female photographer over a male, although there are male photographers that appear to have a soul and make beautiful art, supporting a female artist is so much cooler. I’d also highly encourage the women in your life, especially vulnerable women not to allow themselves to be photographed by male photographers who are not highly established and known..and even those ones should come with good reviews from trusted women.
