Let's get this out of the way first. Women basically never initiate anything so the whole burden of asking for consent before you initiate stuff tends to fall on guys. People advocating for consent culture should acknowledge this more.

One of my biggest fears is accidentally sexually assaulting someone or making someone feel uncomfortable. There's a pretty foolproof strategy to never accidentally sexually assaulting anyone: just ask before you do anything, and if they enthusiastically say yes you're probably in the clear. But like many other foolproof strategies, when put into practice you run into some... difficulties.

I've platonically cuddled with some female friends before so let's use that as an example. Let's say you're cuddling with a girl and you want to touch her boobs, but you don't know if she wants you to touch her boobs. The "consent culture" answer is that Allah solved this problem by giving us mouths to speak with and ears to listen with, so you should just ask her. This would be perfect for a socially inept person like me – why try to use ambiguous social clues to figure out what she wants when I can just ask and see? Only there's a problem.

  1. Let's say she's not interested – what do you think are the odds that she'll be offended and think you're creepy if you just ask "can I touch your boobs?"
  2. Let's say she is interested. A common truism is that "women like confidence", and like it or not there is a decent chunk of women who would be turned off by a guy not having the confidence to just go for it.

Or consider hookup culture on dating apps. Maybe it's because I don't have rippling abs, but in my experience saying "hey, how about you come over and we watch a movie for 15 minutes and then fuck?" is more effective at getting women to unmatch you than anything else. But if it's 1am on a friday night and you invite someone from tinder over to "watch a movie", you and I both know that you and her probably both want to fuck each other and that's probably what's going to happen even if neither of you ever verbally mention sex. So we're back to square one: you have to rely on ambiguous social cues to get a read on what the other party wants you to do with their pants, because if you just ask directly you might scare them away.

Now I'm not saying that men are blameless. Even if you're a good guy, she has no way of knowing that. If women were more direct, they'd be more likely to get slut shamed. And she also runs a potentially greater risk of assault if she's upfront – if she changes her mind after she's already said yes to sex, can she really be 100% sure that the fact that she said yes already won't make the guy think he's entitled to do whatever he wants even though she's changed her mind?

So two orders of business for anyone who wants sex communication to be more direct are to really push back hard against slut shaming and make sure everyone knows that consent can be revoked at any time.

(As a guy you can get some easy street cred here by the way – before anything happens, I always say something like "if I'm making you uncomfortable or going to fast, just let me know and I'll stop right away, okay?". And multiple women have told me unprompted that no other guy has said anything like that and it made them feel much safer.)

But man, if we want guys to ask first, women absolutely have to stop calling guys creepy when they ask first.
