To whoever reported this thread and half the comments in it as "inciting violence:"

Description and prescription are two different things. The scientists who try to understand the mechanisms of cancer are not "pro-cancer." Likewise, the people here discussing the mechanisms that may drive mass shootings are not "pro-mass-shootings." I don't see any incitement to violence here.

It's insane. Especially since a lot of us (The Left) love to talk about how a riot is the language of the unheard and how the violent George Floyd protest were about African Americans venting their frustrations about societal mistreatment.

The same is true of mass shootings. Most mass shooters are young lonely men and their lonliness and disconnection from a society is a key factor in their actions.

And society keeps adding fuel to the fire instead of treating people with care, and dealing with actual issues like loneliness without gaslighting or victim-blaming.

As far as I know (or remember), only one of the shooters had a father figure in their lives, and that was a somewhat absent foster-father.

The attack on the teen's masculinity is a factor, but I think that the absence of a strong male figure to support their development as a man (as they try to grow in a hostile environment) is what's leaving these people vulnerable to these thoughts and actions.

Normally I'm all for the conclusion that you draw, but I worry the way you are getting there may be more than a little counterproductive. I'd be careful about saying that these shootings are the direct result of "letting male suffering go unaddressed" because it sounds to people like you might be justifying what happened or encouraging their paranoia that is an inherently male problem. I know that's not what you're doing, you're just merely pointing out the cause so we can deal with it better, but I don't think it's a productive way to have a conversation. There is a lot of reactionary anti-male hysteria right now and it is just going to add fuel to that fire.

Instead, I think we should objectively point out the harm that is being caused and the loneliness we are feeling without referencing mass shooters. Even if we're able to affect social change by appealing to people's self-interest, that isn't going to truly change anything in the long run, just at a surface level. People will still think men are the enemy, they will just pay lip service to empathy without really feeling it, which is contrary to the goal.

Also, I genuinely believe these shooters have mental problems that go beyond merely being held at arm's length: 99% of us feel the same way and don't kill anyone. There is something else going on there.

TBH I've never seen an article which seriously asked why a school shooting etc. happened; the analysis always boiled down to "because (all) men are evil shits," though they often took 300 words to say it.

This is because of the way that feminism thinks about human nature. If a woman does bad stuff, it's because bad stuff was done to her. But if a man does bad stuff it's because he's a bad person. For feminists, evil is inherently male.

So the feminist controlled media aren't able to analyze this situation: all they see is "boys being boys" and regard such incidents as evidence for the need to control male nature even more rigorously than heretofore.

I can't believe people are still so ignorant about this. It's not just the gun laws. It's the culture and society.

Kids who plot on shooting the school are kids who have been bullied, abused, mistreated and neglected at home, struggling with mental illness, are social outcasts and what not. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the shooters of Columbine High School, are examples of the above. If we want to prevent a school shooting from ever happening again, we need to look at ourselves as a society and you need to look at yourself. How are you treating the people around you? How are you treating the awkward lonely boy in class? What things do you say?

Has anyone here heard of the play 'Bang Bang You're Dead'? It's amazing. The explores gun violence in schools and goes in depths into what provokes kids to shooting the school. My sister did this play for her Drama class production. I learnt more from that play than any other source on gun violence.

There is a very worrisome issue about the fact that increase in violence is partly caused by the treatment of males. And that's the fact that if it is true, (which i believe it to be) there will be nothing done about it. The media and everyone have already proved themselves willing to further discriminate against males and willing to make their lives harder because of the increase in violence. This leads to a posititve feedback loop which will not stop. It will only get worse. Prepare for soft collapse.

I don't know. I'm always shocked when people really don't seem to understand why young men keep committing these awful acts. We are leaving them behind, that's why. We are letting male suffering go unaddressed and tell young men to fester in their loneliness and anger until they decide it isn't worth it anymore. It feels so obvious to me and I genuinely can't tell if it's just a guy thing or a me thing, but I know it's not because men are more violent or trash like that, it's because men are pressured to make a name for themselves and these guys will take horrific acts over obscurity.

I'm a bit surprised that you're shocked by their (primarily white women but also many on the Left in general -- I'm on the left too) reactions. The primary reason is that it's really difficult for them to see men as feeling powerless or unheard because they are men. They aren't constantly bombarded with information about how isolated, frustrated, hurt, emotionally crippled young men are and when they are confronted with the effects, it's either mocked, labeled "insecure", or ignored. It's not easy to see how the group you've been taught by both activists and misogynists to view as privileged might endure some social, personal, and economic disadvantages, and even when you're confronted with the idea, you might think that this is just a necessary side effect of progress.

As others have said already, the mass shooting are a problem unique to USA although what you describe as the cause is not unique to USA. USA has crazy violence rates as compared to European countries although a lot of european countries have a higher rate of suicide or way more skewed suicide ratio so they are not exactly gender equality paradise.

So what's unique about USA? The guns obviously, the racial problems that aren't as common as in other countries, the lack of public healthcare, the prison industrial complex and many others. Those are all the things that should be fixed and you can't just point at one of them and say it's that. Heck, it could even be some new lead–crime hypothesis and we'll find out 50 years from now USA is crazy violent because of the use of high fructose corn syrup.

If you've ever seen full metal jacket, I liken it to the private piles effect. Much like the drill sergeant who does his damndest to make private piles hated, despised and out to be aburden/loser; much of the school and peer pressure system does this to our boys. They go to school, get overlooked and graded down from the get go, told they have all the advantages yet have to watch as girls get special treatment in a system not designed to cater to them and watch opportunities given to girls that aren't afforded to them in the name of equality, if they act up theyre often diagnosed with a disorder and medicated into docility just to comply, are told never to hit girls from the get go while the girls can go around and act with impunity towards them. Any opinions which are against the grain are lambasted and lead to humiliation or ostracising instead of healthy debate. Often the only recognition they get is on a sports field. I would never condone someone who does this but I can understand how they could feel driven to it.
