I know I stand for equality but I definitely don't want to associate myself with people who opposed gender - neutral rape laws in my country.

But according to Emma I'm still a feminist. She apparently knows more about me than myself. Also according to Ani Difranco I'm a misogynist. Why? Because I don't support the said people who are literally AGAINST gender equality.

Exactly. If we had to cause a uproar against everything we disagree with, we would lose focus on the bigger picture and derail the conversation.

When it comes to disagreement, stamping your feet, shaking your fist and pointing fingers may feel vindicating, but it comes at a cost.

Because guess what - people will continue to disagree, but they’ll probably just stop talking to you about it.

Similarly, calling people “incels” or “misogynists” just because they don’t align with your feminist identity, only make you look silly.It will also ensure your ideas exist in a santisied vacuum of your own creation and comfort.

Never challenged, questioned or tested, not subjected to scrutiny; and therefore these ideas will remain stale, antiquated, fragile and lopsided.

We’ve all been there.

Someone says something we don’t agree with, and for the sake of avoiding an argument we keep our heads down and mouths shut.

A room of luke warm silence follows, and the orator atop their soap box becomes convinced of unanimous support.In time only those who agree with the status quo will get to speak openly… and we call this an echo chamber.

So always remember: silence is not support.

Silence can be boredom, silence can be fear, and silence can be total disagreement.

It's a little bit like with Christian fanatics, who think that there are 2 kinds of atheists. Those who are bad people and those who also believe in God, but just don't know about it, because somehow they didn't yet find their path to faith.

The feeling of self righteousness and moral high ground, mixed with some good old tribalism, can be really addictive to people nowadays. It allows them to simplify reality and perceive it on a black and white lens: I, and the people that think like me, are the good guys; and the people that disagree with me, are the bad guys.

Being Feminist might technically mean you support equality of the sexes, sure.

But that's only when looking at the definition of the word, and this has little to do with the actions of people who claim to be Feminists on a larger scale. This ignores the actual context within which Feminism exists in the modern day - used very often as a means to push for supporting female issues over that of males even in cases where equality might require the opposite to be done.

I could argue then that many "Feminists" are not actually Feminists, but that goes into No True Scotsman territory.

So I either can choose to label myself as a Feminist and just insist I'm one of the Feminists that actually believes in equality, or I can pick a label such as Egalitarian that lacks any of that cultural baggage yet also is defined in a way that allows for equality. Obviously then I'm going to choose the latter.

I have no interest in "taking back the word" from people who misuse it.

Besides which - Feminism, even if it can mean "equality" - clearly is a biased word when it comes to men's rights in particular. It might support Men's Rights in theory, but the word itself is centered on women's issues.

Germans are by far the least likely to say they are a feminist in answer to either of the questions where the word “feminist” was used...

The German language itself is very technical compared to English. In German, it is much more obvious that feminism cannot be about social equality for all. It is rather less obvious about what is meant by equality but most would likely presume to include the concept of equality before the law, which few people in English-speaking countries think of unless it is specifically referenced.

I'm actually surprised so many people responded yes to: "I think men and women should be equal in every way". First of all, what does that even mean? Men and women are biologically different so it's impossible to be equal. Does it mean equal opportunity? Equal outcome? It's very vague tbh, especially for yougov.

Seen many polls like, they all are bad. Most people will say no when asked if they are a feminist BUT will actively vote for feminist politicians.
