Thousands of dads are left in shock as DIY paternity tests soar. Up to 30,000 tests are being performed every year, says Alphabiolabs. In the UK about 750,000 babies are born every year. Feminists want the test to be illegal without the written consent of the mother.

Honestly- like everything- moderation is key.

[–]Barrdogg2000 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Everything in moderation. Including moderation.

[–]fuckyourfeelinsbitch 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup gotta make sure you're moderating your moderation, or else you may excessively moderate causing unforeseen chaos.

[+]Digger_is_taken 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is accurate. occasional excess is healthy.

[–]dupes_on_reddit 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And some things none at all

[–]Buddhalove11 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup. Especially moderation.

[–]NtsParadize 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

like everything

Smoking cigarettes, eating cyanide and taking heroin

Nah in my opinion, abstaining is more powerful. Less anxiety, depression, and I always have boners lol….

[–]luttkarm 30 points31 points32 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And this ladies and gentlemen right here is exactly why personal experience is not a reliable form of evidence.

all good things in moderation… murder or something bad is never good in any amounts.

Can you fly and read minds yet?

[+]TigerIIiIy -37 points-36 points-35 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

[+]Pretty_Network5856 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Oh, sorry, I didn't know we were all in the presence of a future child support payer. Carry on.

[+]TigerIIiIy -24 points-23 points-22 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well the women are my wives … and yes I do pay child support so you do have a point. Lol

^ exhibit A ^

[–]nineteenletterslong_ 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you have a point too: with all the energy you have saved by abstaining you can work to pay all the child support you owe

[–]twistedazurr 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is Hitler was murdered in his sleep in the 1910s, would the world be better, or worse? What about Nero? Or Saddam Hussein? Or like Heinrich Himmler?

And bad tends to be a fairly subjective topic. Take abortion for example, what to some people is a human right to others is an unforgivable sin.

[–]Altruistic_Emotion_9 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you had executed a person before commiting any sin or crime (capital punishment), you are the murderer. You cannot pass judgement before a crime has been committed.

People who use such logic ignore the innocent until proven guilty standard accorded to everyone alive today. Therefore, you can't defend abortion on that basis with a clear conscience.

Sorry I made a point that may be different from the topic of your post. I just had to do it

[–]nineteenletterslong_ 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

just out of curiosity, what's your view on female masturbation, oh wise one?

[+]TigerIIiIy -7 points-6 points-5 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I answered this already scroll down. What flavor are we talking ? There are so many kinds like mutual masturbation? DM me and we can go over our options darling.

i'm actually a dude so i could get in trouble if you're below 18

[–]TigerIIiIy 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My apologies friend your avatar threw me off. Man if I was under 18 with child support ?? FML

[–]nineteenletterslong_ 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

impressive for a sinful mortal masturbator but with all the energy you're saving by abstaining it's far from unachievable

[–]MathematicianNo8480 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Tried nofap for years with some minor success. I once got to 100 days no mastubating, no porn. Honestly pretty much felth the same, maybe a bit more energy, nothing out of the ordinary. Except unbearable horniness sometimes, which is quite annoying. Since then i've pretty much always failed lol.

I recently concluded to stop with that and allowed myself to jack off. Optimally it's up to 2 times (once before sleeping). If you do it 3+ times you ain't doing nothing in your day. I use porn/sexual images but maybe i should try to reduce that a bit.

Reason i'm doing this is it's hard to concentrate on studying when sex is on your mind. I'd rather finish in 5-10 minutes and then carry on my day without procrastinating. If i don't, i'd just load of some youtube or watch some tv, and then i'd fail in my exams.

If i had sex i wouldn't do it. Though i've never had it and i doubt i'm gonna do it these 2-3 years, because the dating market is just too fucked and i'm just a fat and broke college student, so sex isn't on the table. Longest i would go for now without masturbation is 1-2 weeks max. I don't think i can wait for 5 years just to have sex without that from time to time. Anyone would go insane, especially when we live in a hyper sexualized society, you can't exactly escape it. Maybe it sound BS to some people (especially nofappers) but it's the best i can do to function right now.

[–]hotpotato138 118 points119 points120 points 3 years ago (58 children) | Copy Link

I disagree with the article. I don't believe in nofap, but I do think too much porn causes those issues.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 37 points38 points39 points 3 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Porn only has the market it does because the demand is there. The demand is created by the current sexless culture we are trapped in. You ever wonder what would happen if porn were outlawed? Or even if it were only available for pay? Society would get real ugly, real fast.

[–]hotpotato138 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I think excessive porn makes men less inclined to have sex. I used to watch porn more often than I do now. I had issues like erectile dysfunction. I don't think it should be outlawed.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Is erectile dysfunction a problem for men who are chronically sexless? I mean, what difference does it make at that point?

[–]hotpotato138 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Yes, erectile dysfunction is still a problem. What if they meet a woman who wants sex?

[–]Porpoise555 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cut the porn off. Your ED will resolve itself.

I wish this common knowledge but it seems like people forget that it works. Stop stimulating your dopamine constantly so that when sex happens your dopamine works correctly.

People treat porn like opiates. Like once you watch it your hooked for life.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

What if they met a woman who wants to have sex? Most of us must be aware of the recent study that suggested that something like 80% of women are sleeping with only 30% of men. Correct me on those percentages if I'm wrong. Many of us are going on years of deprivation. Even in marriages. I guess we should just cross our fingers, lock our phones on safe search, and keep hoping?

[–]hotpotato138 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Some men are choosing to be single because they don't want toxic women.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Ya think? I'm practically aged out of the market now, so what I do (or abstain from doing) now is pretty much irrelevant. Just wish I had learned sooner in life.

[–]thegoodearthquake 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Aged out ? How old if I may ask.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I just see sex workers and sex services becoming more popular and guys having to hit on girls more.

I do see some crime going up but I'm not sure if it's overall net negative. People will slowly become sensitized again.

The average person can get off on their celebrity crush instead of watching some random girl get plowed but five guys while using a dominator 8,000 on full blast and giving a gawk gawk 9,000.

It's a hard problem to solve. We need AI robot wives and girlfriends for most of these hikikomoris. Porn is incomplete and acts like an addictive drug. At least AI robots can pass into the companionship territory and fill in that loneliness hole.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think we're still a long way off from convincing A.I. I, for one, would always be aware that an A.I. can never be more than an expensive sex toy. In the same way that porn is not entirely satisfying. And why have a robo-wife when you could have a 1992 Michelle Pfeiffer replicant one? And that brings some moral questions with it, too. Still, none of that is coming in our lifetime. And when, or if, it ever does, you think poor, working class men will be allowed to have those things? We lived through times when porn wasn't a part of our lives. Early Colonial America comes to mind. But I suspect that sex was more frequently engaged in than we are lead to believe. Those pilgrims weren't abstaining from everything.

[–]Maxi-Spade -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nope, that's why there's chatlines and phone sex. Most men call them for phone sex and women call them for relationships and chat. They want to hear a woman's voice while jerking off.

[–]NtsParadize -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Porn only has the market it does because the demand is there

And it still has devastating effects on its users.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Loneliness is more harmful to men than porn. I've said enough on this already.

[–]NtsParadize -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Two wrongs don't make a right.

[–]Anih1list 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

Porn is not the same as masturbation. The former is bad in quantity, the latter is inevitable.

[–]hotpotato138 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Men use porn as a masturbation aid.

[–]ApprehensiveMail8 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But you don't need to. And high speed internet porn is very different than your grandfather's Playboy.

[–]Anih1list 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree that it’s a poor substitute for an active imagination.

[–]Big_Passenger_7975 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I had a girlfriend who masturbated and it ruined our sex life. I would want some and she wouldn’t but then I would find out it was because she has gotten off to some porn. She tried to tell me it made her more horny, lol it did not.

[–]nineteenletterslong_ 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

that's some parody supervillain origin story.

i couldn't have sex with my girlfriend because she would rather masturbate. now i plan to rid the world of masturbation.

you probably aren't being serious but it's funny either way

[–]TigerIIiIy -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

It would make a good comic book but the reality is I moved on and she moved out.

[–]nineteenletterslong_ 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

maybe your wives scared her off

[+]TigerIIiIy -6 points-5 points-4 points 3 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

What’s your deal friend? The conviction to stop using your penis for selfishness is a hard saying … who can hear it ? just open your mind that maybe God has a better plan then this blue pill rubbish.

[–]nineteenletterslong_ 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

it's selfish to masturbate now?

why though, if it's harmful to oneself?

i take the multiple wives and god as an indication that you're muslim,

hey, all you guys who claim muslims rape women! hear ye hear ye! here is how they do it: they stop men from masturbating until they can't control themselves when they see succulent, alluring hwhwhite whwhwoman.

on a more serious note: ask yourselves why a misogynistic religion would consider it selfish for men, and only men, to masturbate. wouldn't it try to shame women instead for not devoting their sexuality to men?

[–]TigerIIiIy1 point 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

They called it self abuse for a reason

No friend, it just means one is no more and now I have another

[–]nineteenletterslong_6 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

if masturbation can be addictive then why can't sex?

because women regulate it. got it.

or is it god? god through women. unless the women are controlled by satan, but then all they do is masturbate.

in reality, however, masturbation isn't toxic like a drug. it also doesn't cause addiction, although obsessive and compulsive behavior can include masturbation as well as anything else.

[–]TigerIIiIy0 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Well anything can be addictive? In reality you will do better to stop watching porn and join a gym. Get married and pay child support like me 🤪

[–]nineteenletterslong_5 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

can paying child support be addictive? because feeding it is much more likely to get you bankrupt than porn

[–]TigerIIiIy0 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It’s a joke having a children is such a blessing. The real problem is the system we are under. Divorce is way to easy. If your so afraid of child support marry a woman who is fixed

[–]nineteenletterslong_5 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

fixed? already in a stable marriage?

i'm still waiting to hear why i can't masturbate, and now why it should be difficult for people to divorce. why would you want to be with someone who's trying to get away from you but finds it too difficult?

[–]Anih1list3 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Omg this Tiger guy is so funny

[–]TigerIIiIy1 point 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It’s just so much fun to play on here

[–]nineteenletterslong_1 point 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

just don't get addicted to it or you'll go to hell

[–]TigerIIiIy1 point 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Well I think we have the root problem, Gods not waiting to punish you… hell is an event not a place somewhere in the universe… you can have heaven now if you will live for him. Why do something that is so clearly highly addictive with so little if any Benefits?

[–]nineteenletterslong_1 point 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

masturbation isn't addictive. almost everybody does it.

it also has benefits. recreation of no others.

i think what you said can be applied to arguing on reddit. there are no benefits to it and if we're still here we're probably somewhat addicted

[–]TigerIIiIy1 point 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The argument of majority is a terrible argument. It’s addictive and your comment is that of an addict. If you think it’s not try going 3 months without it. If you can I’ll start masturbating. You won’t make a week.

[–]nineteenletterslong_1 point 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

i never made an argument of majority

[–]TigerIIiIy1 point 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yea you did. You said “almost everyone does it.” I could name many things throughout history where the majority was wrong.

[–]TigerIIiIy2 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Well you can masturbate…? I mean I try not to because

  • sex is so much better and it takes my drive away from pursuing real intimacy. -Porn in some form is usually involved and I don’t like porn -Jacking off can lead to poor sexual habits -Masturbating is beta

[–]wildwolfcore 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not with the way the laws are. That’s like playing roulette with four rounds instead of one

[–]TigerIIiIy 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I receive this … you are right about the laws, I still feel like marriage is the best way to have a committed relationship with someone. I didn’t say it had to be codified through the government. A wife does not have to mean sign the contract.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't agree at all with both, NOFAP is pure bs and it's downright unhealthy for men. masturbation even helps prevent testicular cancer. And porn is only bad depending on YOUR mentality and relationship with porn. A healthy person knows porn isnt real sex and you can indulge in something unreal and not make a connection between that and real life. There's a clear diff for me between the porn i watch and how sex is irl and i dont even compare those. You can enjoy 2 seperate things at the time.

[–]StingRayFins -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well the issue is most guys do have a bad addiction to porn. I'm glad you don't but the rest do and that's not good for anyone, men or women.

[–]TechnologyImpos1 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]ABKB 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The scientists found no evidence that frequent ejaculations mark an increased risk of prostate cancer. In fact, the reverse was true: High ejaculation frequency was linked to a decreased risk. Compared to men who reported 4–7 ejaculations per month across their lifetimes, men who ejaculated 21 or more times a month enjoyed a 31% lower risk of prostate cancer. And the results held up to rigorous statistical evaluation even after other lifestyle factors and the frequency of PSA testing were taken into account.

Let's be honest the only reason porn is looked down on just like video games is because it has a majority male audience.

Having literally new gen equipment to master bath for women is seen as perfectly fine and normal but a guy using his left hand after a tough day is seen as having a problem.

[–]EvidencePlz 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This! Exactly this! Literally anything and everything that makes a man happy sexually is bad according to females. Look up MakeLoveNotPorn if you don't believe me. They criticise the porn that caters to the male-gaze, and decided to create their own feminist-version of porn and are now trying to shove it down men's throat.

[–]throwwayz7383 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

A lot of it is because of pois. Post orgasmic illness syndrome. A lot of people have it and don’t know it, and they think everyone feels like that. Even the r/nofap people have it and don’t know it, especially them.

For normal people though there is absolutely nothing wrong with it unless it negatively effects your personal relationships or life.

[–]TigerIIiIy 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Relationships aren't worth it for me. Too much hastle. If one forms naturally I'll consider it. Don't wanna catch feelings and be replaced later on.

It would be nice to split costs but that's not a good reason to seek one out. I don't believe people actually care about each other but rather what the other person provides to them. Relationships have become too transactional.

I actually am perfectly content.

[–]TigerIIiIy 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Let's be honest the only reason porn is looked down on just like video games is because it has a majority male audience.

I don't think that's the only reason. From what I understand it's pretty shitty industry to work in. People care when an industry treats women poorly. That's how you get the sex negative feminists decrying porn as exploitative and demeaning towards women.

[–]equalRights111 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Many other industries are not nice to work in. Why is porn special?

[–]potatishplantonomist 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And yet, if it's not a good industry, why do that many people join it?

[–]KochiraJin -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think the unique aspects of the porn industry are the large and visible group of women working in it and it's capability of eroding your ability to form a loving bond with other people. Most other shit jobs are occupied by men so they don't get the scrutiny that porn does.

[–]equalRights111 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That’s true. I think the main issue stems from the idea of protecting and providing for women. The whole ‘women and children first’ aspect. That idea is not wrong per se, but feminism ignores that aspect.

[–]KochiraJin 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also consider that in addition to the empathy gap, there are several large religions that consider it a sin. That belief originated when we didn't have modern medicine to deal with STDs, where such prohibitions are much more sensible.

[–]CentralAdmin 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah but it's not like women are forming a loving bond with men whether they see them working in gruelling jobs or not.

Marriage is in decline and there is a record number of single people. Most people using porn would probably prefer to have sex with someone so it's a substitute.

Put another way, if you watch movies about sport and cannot enjoy a game in real life because it isn't like the movies, there is something wrong with you. Not with the film. You should be able to separate fantasy from reality. And if you would rather jerk off to some people on a screen than form loving relationships, again, that's not the problem of the film.

The reason men and women are not forming loving relationships is not due to porn. They are overworked and underpaid. Kids are too expensive. Women have raised the bar so high that only a handful of men meet their requirements.

https://abc7chicago.com/cornell-university-researchers-blame-the-decline-of-us-marriages-on-a-shortage-economically-attractive-men-for-unmarried-women-to-marry/5528921/

The ideal man for marriage must earn 60% above the national average. And let's not forget the heigh filters on Bumble:

https://mobile.twitter.com/PersianCapital/status/1501202280120729603

90% of women are filtering for only 6% of men. And that is just height. If you factor in earnings, age range, availability (whether he is married or not), looks and distance it becomes clear the average Joe is just not cutting it anymore.

Porn is a symptom. It's a substitute for love most men are not getting. Many men have checked out of society because the competition to be seen as good enough just isn't worth it. Why get into tons of debt to get a job that will never earn you enough to buy a house to even begin to raise a family? Why date when you would be wasting money trying to impress someone for love and sex that almost never materialises? And what of marriage? Most divorces are initiated by women, especially educated women with degrees.

What's the point of playing a rigged game? Prostitutes and porn are a guaranteed way to at least scratch an itch. I am sure most of the guys living in mom's basement, spending their money on video games, weed and jerking off to porn would trade some of that for a loving partner, their own home and even a family. What else are they supposed to do when that doesn't happen?

Porn isn't stopping people from forming loving relationships. Corporations, universities, expenses related to dating, a barren land of online dating prospects, the high divorce rate, a culture rife with misandry and women's unrealistic expectations play a much larger role in this than porn.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

But Onlyfans is fine? I guess exploitation is only ok if a woman is doing the exploiting of her body herself?

[–]KochiraJin 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The sex negative feminists wouldn't be in favor of onlyfans either. They were quite prudish. I'm not saying that the porn industry is never attacked because its audience is mostly male, it's just not the only reason. The religious moral minders have been attacking it for decades for instance. That's on the basis that sex outside of marriage is a sin.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Both "sex negative" feminists and the religious moral minded need something to attack or they might feel rudderless. Porn has been with us forever and always will be.

[–]KochiraJin -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

There certainly are people like that, but that doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with the porn industry. It's not beyond reproach. It's just that those people tend to blow things out of proportion in an effort to scare people away.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

As I've stated elsewhere, women only have a problem with the porn industry when they want to leave it, when they want to shed the stigma attached to their old "career", when it is in direct competition with them, and when it forces them to adjust their own mating strategies in a direction that benefits men more than women. Up to that point, we're told women participating in porn are "empowered" and "breaking taboos."

[–]KochiraJin -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As I've stated elsewhere, women only have a problem with the porn industry when they want to leave it

Except the religious people who scorn it don't typically participate in it. Your view is too narrow. What you describe does exist but it's not the only game in town.

so true. some women are telling us sex work is inherently degrading to women, other women treat it as any kind of job and celebrate not giving it up when they start a family.

feminists do both and treat sex work as both degrading to women and sticking it up to the patriarchy which doesn't want you do it.

men are trying to figure out which way is the right way if they don't want to be misogynists. feminist men go both ways and go insane

The article quotes Dr Nicole Prause, but neglects to mention her acrimonious and bizarrely petty history with NoFap and the late Gary Wilson, another anti-porn advocate.

https://www.yourbrainonporn.com/relevant-research-and-articles-about-the-studies/critiques-of-questionable-debunking-propaganda-pieces/nicole-prauses-unethical-harassment-and-defamation-of-gary-wilson-others/

She has a history of making false accusations/ Twitter harassment to try to discredit NoFap and other anti-porn activists. She has been sued for defamation by MULTIPLE people including the founder of NoFap who had to raise money from the NoFap community to cover his legal expenses (I donated to this). She ended up settling most of those cases.

But, anyways, research coming from someone who has already been sued by the very community she is trying to target and discredit in the research is not exactly unbiased.

Oh, this is the same woman who studied penis size by letting a bunch of women choose their preferred 3D printed dildo size. Because a good way to help men with body dysmorphia is by literally objectifying us?

[–]luttkarm 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Regardless of Dr. Nicole Prause's actions, nofap and anti-porn don't need anyone to discredit them. They are already untrustworthy and don't have any credit whatsoever.

The money went to paying legal fees to hold a false accuser accountable. She was forced to settle so that's a good first step. But it is disheartening to see that her "research" is still being held up in some media outlets as though she is a respected expert rather than a convicted serial harasser of people who do not bow down to her views on pornography, backed up only by her own research which is sheer nonsense.

It's weird that you're trying to make it sound like we're the conspiracy theorists when there are thousands of men who have participated in NoFap or given up porn/masturbation for other reasons and have nothing but positive things to say about it, and the idea that masturbation and pornography are addictive has been around for thousands of years and is readily obvious to anyone who has experienced it firsthand.

Of course "research" conducted by a handful of people that claims to contradict the lived experience of millions of people is, and should be, challenged. That doesn't make Dr. Prause a victim nor does it make her research the scientific consensus.

Actually, every study ever published on the group found the same negative effects. As concluded in the study that you did not read, because you were more interested in personal attacks to justify you losing your own money:

You are telling everyone to ignore their own clients telling the public they are being harmed. I can keep going, but they are telling you it is killing people, and your response is to attack someone you hate? Ad hominem over and over and over. How about dealing with the substance of the science? That every study done on these groups is finding they target children and harm the public? As long as she works for a university, Prause is covered by a very good legal insurance. But even a very good legal insurance presses clients for accepting a settlement, instead of endlessly litigating their case.

And the terms she settled for are confidential, so you don't know if she or her insurance had to pay a dime to her adversary. The fact that he bragged publicly about getting paid damages does not make it a proven fact.

You should know that settlements are very usual in civil cases, same as the plea bargain is very usual in penal cases. (Plea bargain is the rule, full penal trial is the exception.)

[–]tgeorgescu -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Except that in ICD-11 CBSD is explicitly not an addiction, and DSM-5-TR fully rejected both CBSD and sex/porn addiction.

So, unless DSM-6 changes that, the medical orthodoxy sides with Prause. That means you cannot be diagnosed with and treated for porn addiction in the US, well, except by quacks who are never covered by medical insurance.

And technically diagnosing people with porn addiction amounts to a felony, since MDs are highly unlikely to do that.

[–]ApprehensiveMail8 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The whole "Porn/ sex addiction isn't a clinical diagnosis" line is super misleading to the point of being insincere.

Yes, psychiatrists are on the fence about whether or not it is possible to diagnose any specific person as being a "sex addict" or "porn addict" as a formal diagnosis.

But that does not mean that clinical treatment for sex addiction/ compulsive sexual behavior/Out-of-control porn use/ hypersexual disorder/ whatever-you-want-to-call-it is not available. It does not mean that porn is not habit-forming, or that people cannot have problems because of porn use.

It just means psychologists can't agree on exactly what it is or who exactly has it or if they want to call it an "addiction" or a "compulsion".

And it doesn't even mean there aren't treatments offered by professionals for sex addiction and porn addiction.

Dr. Prause HERSELF offered treatment for high sex drive through Liberos LLC.

To argue porn isn't at the very least a difficult habit to break is utter non-sense.

A lot of folks have "called BS" based on intution or personal expereince, and validly so. To put it in more formal terms though: there's a glaring methodological issue with the study mentioned.

Men were surveryed, asked if they did any kind of nofap, and what their expereince with anxiety, self-esteem, shame, ED, etc... was. Of course:

The only men doing nofap are the ones who feel they have a problem, and thus are self-selecting for the things the article claims nofap is responsible for. Weather A causes B or B causes A is outside the remit of the study.

Men who have a naturally healthier relationship with porn aren't failing any NNN challenges to feel ashamed about.

Well said: I think another way to put it is that temporarily FEELING anxious or depressed because you missed a goal you set for yourself is not at all the same as having an anxiety disorder or clinical depression. The study conflates the two.

[–]Wayback_Cod 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Eh, did you read the study? Other labs already found these guys actually mostly suffer from clinical depression. They are being misdirected to ineffective treatments because someone wants to make money off them. It was in the study:
Shahinyan, Gary K.; Hu, Ming-Yeah (2023). "Cannabis and male sexual health: contemporary qualitative review and insight into perspectives of young men on the internet". Sexual Medicine Reviews: 1–12. doi:10.1093/sxmrev/qeac010

This is not the first study to find the harms being done, and so long as people like you continue to lie to the public, it will not be the last.

[–]tgeorgescu 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't believe that it won't last, since there are many people brought up with Victorian, Ayurvedic, or Traditional Chinese Medicine superstitions about wasting semen. And, as they say, there's one born every minute. Also, if you have read the literature, most of the time membership of NoFap lasts for only five years. So, NoFap is a kind of rite of passage for crazed teenagers.

[–]Pretty_Network5856 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Ignoring the possibility of cancer, then, I'm calmer and more rational. This imaginary "it makes you lazy and keeps you from reaching level 100" claim is just that, imaginary and childish. Characterizing men who masturbate to porn as weak, undisciplined, or addicted is ludicrous. It's not fucking heroin. This argument clearly comes from a place of seeking female approval, a much more dangerous addiction.

I believe this to be true and honestly I think it's important for guys to be comfortable doing the deed just like women are. To think it's this cancerous thing is ridiculous. Your body needs to orgasm every now and then, there's a shit load of energy that gets built up and bearing all of that without a partner is bad. It also can scare people off because you come on too strong. But moderation is key, yes. Your body will tell you and when you struggle you'll know. For years and years women were told not to masturbate it that it was unhealthy. Now they do it often and nobody thinks twice about it. So why is it bad for men to do it? Because if women are taking care of their needs, duh, do should dudes!

you don't sound different to a feminist.

a feminist's idea of an antifeminist complains about women being fat and lazy.

in reality they complain about men being fat and lazy, just like them.

i know obesity is a problem, but it's caused by over-eating, not masturbation. the idea that recreation for men in general is harmful to society is old and in my opinion rooted in the fear that it takes time and motivation away from producing for women and the ruling class.

[+]Sea-Cow4216 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for explaining feminist to me. My dumb last brain must not have been able to comprehend it correctly.

[–]Porpoise555 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quality of human interaction these days is more of the problem than the porn.

I challenge anyone to argue that. Relationships these days are baseless, utilitarian, transactional, functional.

People will fake love and affection as long as their material and physical needs are met to the highest standard.

As soon as you can be replaced. Poof.

Nobody stands by their partner anymore. Everyone is disposable.

You may get lucky, but for many its not worth the hassle. Human nature is overcoming our sense of duty and commitment. And porn is just another symptom of larger problem and appeals to that same human nature.

It's significant to emphasise that there hasn't been much scientific research on this particular issue, and that people's experiences can differ. There are some things to think about, though:

Masturbation and mental health:

Endorphins and other feel-good hormones can be released during masturbation, which may help one feel relaxed and well.

According to several research, frequent sexual activity, including masturbation, might improve mood and lessen anxiety and despair in some people. Masturbation and mental health do, however, have a complicated and variable relationship that depends on various conditions.

Mental health and abstinence:

Some anecdotal evidence suggests that abstaining from masturbation might increase sexual frustration, which in some people may be a factor in feelings of anxiety or even melancholy.

It's crucial to understand that not everyone will experience these impacts, and that each person's reactions to abstinence may vary according on their personal beliefs, values, and exposure to certain cultural or religious influences.

There is no concrete scientific evidence to support the idea that foregoing masturbation causes erectile dysfunction (ED). In actuality, there are a variety of physical, psychological, and medical explanations for ED. If you have persistent or alarming problems with erectile function, you must speak with a medical practitioner.

You probably feel 'anxious' and 'depressed' when you stop jerking off because for the first time in your life you aren't jacking off every day so your body reaches a hormonal equilibrium which allows you to perceive life as it is and not live in your delusion of it.

[–]ModernOrangutan1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

Can we please set the record straight about all of this:

  1. If you are using masturbation as a coping mechanism for anxiety or depression then of course abstaining may increase those mental issues, just as abstaining from any coping mechanism will make it worse for a short period of time
  2. Viewing Porn and Masturbating are two separate things, but for the vast majority of men they are activities that take place at the same time. There is absolutely no scientifically agreed-upon evidence that not masturbating will increase ED, regardless of what the DailyMail decides to report.
  3. The idea that masturbation decreases your risk of prostate cancer is completely false. This is a statement contrived from an older scientific study with men older than 50+, and it wasn't masturbation itself it was the orgasm they were experiencing that reduces your risk.
  4. Regular use of Porn DOES increase your risk of ED and the vast majority of people who are anti-masturbation are truly anti-porn, but like I said earlier those two activities go hand-in-hand in modern society
  5. There are no actually documented health benefits to Masturbating, and truly (imo) Masturbation is a self-destructive activity when its done alone and to pictures on a screen

[–]nineteenletterslong_ 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

just out of curiosity, is masturbation destructive for women too?

Congratulations, this is the dumbest thing I've ever read. You win.

[–]ApprehensiveMail8 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not so dumb when you actually read the research. The studies that have found a link between prostate cancer risk and "masturbation" don't exist. What does exist are studies that show a link between self-reported "ejaculatory frequency" and prostate cancer risk, along with age and other factors.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27871956/

Okay, you might say, but if ejaculating more frequently lowers your risk of prostate cancer wouldn't masturbation help?

Well, maybe, but the thing is, what they found was not a linear relationship but rather more like a U-shape relationship. For example, there was no significant difference in PCa between men who reported ejaculating between 13-20 times per month and men who reported ejaculating more than 21 times per month. And men who reported ejaculating LESS than 4 times a month actually had better outcomes then men who reported ejaculating 4-7 times per month.

So... let's say you are married and ejaculate from sex with your wife three times a week. Well, that puts you in the 13-20 EPM category even without masturbation and there is no evidence that additional ejaculations will help.

What if you're single and NEVER ejaculate except through masturbation? Well, if you NEVER masturbate your odds are average, if you masturbate 1-2 times a week you are at slightly higher risk and if you masturbate every day you are at slightly lower risk.

[–]L0cked4fun -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]runner557 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

There has also been some studies that show frequent ejaculation reduces risks of prostate cancer.

It's common sense biologically. Things in the body that aren't used either atrophy or become weakened. If you have excess muscles that aren't needed, they reduce in size. If you don't exercise the heart, your cardio system isn't optimal and your risk for heart disease increases. There is evidence that you can help ward off brain diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's by keeping the brain active and learning. Doctors will frequently tell seniors to do puzzles and do activities that keep the brain thinking and active.

One of the main functions of the prostate gland is to expel fluids and chemicals that contribute in semen production and ejaculation. It also plays a role in regulating hormones. If you restrain from ejaculation for an extended period of time, it makes sense that it could cause issues.

Sex is a biological and psychological need. Those in the no fap community that claim otherwise don't know what they are talking about. Yes, there is such thing as porn addiction and such. But the urges to have sex are perfectly normal and natural, not just in humans but every species. The drive to procreate is needed for a species to survive.

Porn-induced ED can happen. That's true. But ED for the most part is psychological. Sometimes aging and circulatory issues can play a role (Viagra helps with that). But most ED can be caused by some type of psychological trigger. Stress, anxiety, performance anxiety, inability to focus, depression, etc... can all cause ED. Some medications can also cause it. Porn-induced ED can usually be correctly easily by slowing shifting the stimuli. While some of these other issues may take more work.

I’m not saying it’s the only factor, but doctors recommend masturbation to help alleviate an enflamed/enlarged prostate. An enflamed/enlarged prostate increases the risk of developing prostate cancer. I’m not sure what’s controversial about that. Sexual activity is generally considered healthy.

[–]ApprehensiveMail8 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What doctors recommend "masturbation" to alleviate an enflamed prostate? There are internal and external prostate massages, which most certainly could be used as a form of masturbation, but it's not the way most straight guys masurbate!

[–]RikuAotsuki -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't really get how so many people fail to recognize that masturbation isn't the problem.

NoFap contributes to that heavily, which is stupid because it's meant to be about breaking porn addiction, not an anti-masturbation cult.

Shocker, a porn addiction isn't good for you. That doesn't mean masturbation isn't.
