Well Amy Schumer is an idiot .... and a rapist but nobody cares because she's a women female privilege much?

[–]Alarming_Draw 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thought experiment to prove Amy wrong in seconds;

Imagine the reaction if SHE had made the joke, and Will had slapped HER.....

[–]Arguesovereverythin 81 points82 points83 points 4 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Didn't she rape a guy?

Two

[–]lDarlo_2007 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Details? How is she still famous???

[–]angsan_F 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She legit brags about it on podcasts, and shows

[–]wanthonio31 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yo what?

[–]yoitsericc 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Sort of. She had sex with an extremely drunk guy. I'm not sure I would consider it rape.

If the genders were reversed, the feminists would ABSOLUTELY consider it rape.

[–]penguinslovevodka 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Well in England our laws are funked women can't rape men

Rape

(1)A person (A) commits an offence if—

(a)he intentionally penetrates the vagina, anus or mouth of another person (B) with his penis

Not sure what you mericans have in legislation but hey feminists never complain about this wounder why? 🤔 https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2003/42/part/1/crossheading/rape

[–]Sadder_Burrito 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Wait what.. is this real? Is there some missing part? This cant be true... Right?

[–]Plenty-Green186 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It’s true in a lot of places, including many states in the us

[–]penguinslovevodka 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah funny how there's not a feminist fight for equality in that law right?

[–]Plenty-Green186 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I’ve mostly heard women criticize the law actually

[–]penguinslovevodka 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I've never heard a woman never mind a feminist raise this issue so I'd say sorces are In need for that statement

[–]Plenty-Green186 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Literally the first source that came up https://digitalcommons.law.seattleu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1546&context=sjsj

[–]WTRKS1253 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Was that source made by a feminist?

[–]wumbo-inator 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

England isn’t the only country, it’s unfortunately very true

[–]wumbo-inator 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s legally considered rape. Intoxicated people cannot consent. If a sober person has sex with a person who is so drunk they’re literally passing out, that drunk person does not have the mental facilities available to consent to sex. Amy Schumer had sex with someone like that, and therefore is a rapist

[–]hehimCA 124 points125 points126 points 4 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Amy Schumer is the living embodiment of toxicity.

[–]GnomeChompy 80 points81 points82 points 4 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

And also a rapist.

[–]TextDependent6779 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

and ofc when you look up 'amy schumer is a rapist', one of the first links is about her being raped, and not relevant articles about her being one...

really displays which victims are considered more important.

and even in terms of her comedy, looks like she likes making offensive jokes, but not if that joke is offensive directed towards women. she isn't even that funny.

If you want people to know your side of the story, it's up to you to provide a source. If they did their own research they could find a bad source that goes against your own side of the story.

Y’all I get dissent is illegal in feminist circles, but unless you want to be like them lets be better than that. Isn’t one of our main things how unfair the false accusation situation is? Lets give some source or evidence to our claims, set an example.

[–]philhalo66 43 points44 points45 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

she literally bragged about it dude...

[–]BrickDaddyShark 19 points20 points21 points 4 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Edit: wow rather egregiously, and in a speech too holy fuck

[–]philhalo66 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

im shocked you didn't know. she brags about it in all of her standup and in her podcast dozens of times. she thinks its hilarious she raped 2 men.

Thank you.

[–]BrickDaddyShark 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Np man. I don’t care how common knowledge is, if it’s being stated as fact then it is reasonable to ask for at minimum a link. Dogmatism gets us nowhere and I respect those who keep it real.

[–]PaulfussKrile 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, it’s people not willing to question the ideals of their respective groups that got us in this mess to begin with.

[–]proto_shane 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Or the living emobiment of a joke

[–]Mephisto_Marquis 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ironic, her existence is a joke yet she can't tell a good joke to save her career.

'And it was just a f***ing bummer. All I can say is that it was really sad, and I think it says so much about race, about toxic masculinity. It's just everything.'

Ok Amy, what DOES it say "so much about race"?

maybe explain real quick what you mean by that? Tell us exadtly what your assumptions about race were that you think were confirmed here?

I think Amy fucked up and said the quiet part out loud here.

[–]needalife94 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Great now she's a racist too ?

[–]TextDependent6779 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

she makes racist jokes.

now personally, i don't have a problem with offensive jokes, as long as they're actually funny and can be directed at anyone.

of course, like most female comedians. she gets pissed if a joke is misogynistic. but racist, or misandrist jokes are fine.

basically, amy schumer being a racist should surprise no one.

[–]StingRayFins 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And did she provide an explanation? Because if not she's just spouting bullshit toxic feminist idealogies.

What Will did is not "masculine" at all. Actually the opposite. It's weak and immature. If Will were truly "toxic masculinity" in feminist terms he'd be a real man in reality.

He would have been a stronger man, a more composed man, a more wise man. He wouldn't have let Jada completely destroy him and strip him of his pride and masculinity.

That is what led him to lash out and assault a comedian for doing his damn job. That was due to abuse and manipulation from a modern woman, Jada.

Amy has no idea wtf she's talking about. She is a lost and desperate girl and she's trying to mislead younger girls to fk up their lives just like she did.

Younger girls better be wise and careful what they listen to. A bunch of miserable women are trying to destroy them.

[–]TextDependent6779 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you just don't understand until you've lived it. amy schumer and all these other feminists talk like they know the cause, but they could never grasp what it would be like.

of course, no excusing wills actions. the lack of self-control to assault someone, in front of potentially millions...

[–]gregg_dark 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. Will was laughing at the joke then looks at Jada. Then gets mad. This is a case of simp Will and toxic feminity. Will on his own was laughing at joke like everyone else. Then his very toxic cheating wife steps in and violence happens.

[–]Tulcey-Lee 52 points53 points54 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Oh god. I’m a woman and my best friend who is also a woman messaged me when this happened and said ‘how long until this blamed on toxic masculinity’

Also didn’t one of the female hosts call men up on stage and sent them backstage and made a comment about taking their clothes off? I don’t know the context behind it but I do remember thinking of it had been a man saying it about women, people would be up in arms.

[+]RayDho88 -64 points-63 points-62 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

'I'm a woman and...' wtf is the point of saying that? You sound like you're the type of woman that defends men when they make sexist remarks lmao.

[–]philhalo66 35 points36 points37 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

and you sound like the typical pink haired feminist.

Just because u put it in an abbreviation, doesnt make it okay.. Dont come around here cussing. You have a valid argument spit it, else pack up..

[–]RayDho88 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There is an argument you moron but obv the sexist dudes on this thread are just going to downvote the shit out of it lmao without understanding.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 34 points35 points36 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Regina Hall made a joke directly to Will Smiths face about his wife's infidelity while she was groping unconsenting men on stage, the same wife who gave him the "you're in trouble" look when Will laughed at the GI Jada joke, and then only laughed herself when Will assaulted Chris. It's funny watching your husband trash his career.

but yeah, let's talk about toxic masculinity while the twitter scape is full of women saying how much their panties moistened at a man defending his woman's honor.

Maybe Amy would like to regale us with her TWO stories about raping unwilling men that she thinks is really funny.

'And it was just a f***ing bummer. All I can say is that it was really sad, and I think it says so much about race, about toxic masculinity. It's just everything.'

Let's not just let this racist comment slide either.

[–]psuedoscientist500 42 points43 points44 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yes because Jada had nothing to do with the incident. The day feminism admits to their share of the problems, admits to female entitlement, and admits to toxic female behavior is the day I'll become a feminist.

[+]Hit_riolusquad -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

This ain't the entire feminist group, Amy Schumer is just a fucking clown.

[–]lasciate 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

...As if Amy Schumer is the only feminist to jump to blaming negative behavior by a male on toxic masculinity. The sexist "toxic masculinity" concept destroys all feminist rhetoric and ideology.

  • If "toxic masculinity" is supposed to describe innate traits of males, then feminists have admitted that there are psychological traits that are innate to sex, which opens the door to criticism of women as a gender for any and all behavior deemed undesirable. And in that case, the idea of "sexism" as a negative act is gone.

  • If it's supposed to describe socialized/performative gendered behavior, then that opens the door to criticism of females as a sex for any and all behavior deemed undesirable. And in that case, the idea of "sexism" as a negative act is gone.

As usual, feminists have sown the seeds of their own logical contradiction. Under any reasonable circumstance such a paradoxical situation would beg resolution and a movement whose members are responsible for propagating it would be expected to speak against it. But, as usual, those seeds will never bear fruit because feminists exploit traditional sexist attitudes that necessitate the promotion of women's interests above all other concerns. Sexism is desirable and acceptable if it advantages women and undesirable and unacceptable if it disadvantages women, by definition.

There is no "good" or "not good" application of the concept of "toxic masculinity" or an application that preserves the rationality of feminist theory. If you employ it as a descriptor of men's or male behavior you have necessarily admitted that feminism is pro-sexism.

[–]Hit_riolusquad 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Mate, you're talking as if every person that supports Men's rights is somehow always a moraly good person.

My mum's a feminist, my sister's a feminist, they don't go to protests they don't do all that extra work but they're not fucking idiots and I trust their moral and ethical judgment when it comes to sexism and men's and women's rights because they are sound and competent, that also doesn't mean that they or I am/are blind to the disadvantages that a man faces.

You need to stop pretending that feminism is the root of all evil just because there are areas that offend you because I assure you that there are areas of Men's rights that offend women and men as well for good reasons.

And toxic masculinity is real, doesn't mean it's as awful and unnecessary as it may be portrayed but it is real. Amy Schumer is a fucking idiot, she raped someone (or a couple of people I think) and she's sexist but she's allowed to be called a feminist because you can't exactly monitor who can and can't call themselves a feminist.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And toxic masculinity is real

It's such a terrible term though. Why even call it that? Why not just call it misandry?

[–]lasciate 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mate, you're talking as if every person that supports Men's rights is somehow always a moraly good person.

No I'm not. You want me to be doing that. Please don't put words in my mouth.

What does that have to do with what I said?

You need to stop pretending that feminism is the root of all evil just because there are areas that offend you because I assure you that there are areas of Men's rights that offend women and men as well for good reasons.

No I'm not. You want me to be doing that. Please don't put words in my mouth.

And toxic masculinity is real, doesn't mean it's as awful and unnecessary as it may be portrayed but it is real.

We're finally on-topic with something I actually mentioned in my comment, unfortunately you seem not to have read what I wrote and have decided to talk past me. I'll copy and paste it to give you another opportunity.

What is "toxic masculinity" and how do you reconcile that negative, gendered concept with supposed anti-sexism?

What is "toxic femininity"?

Amy Schumer is a fucking idiot, she raped someone (or a couple of people I think) and she's sexist but she's allowed to be called a feminist because you can't exactly monitor who can and can't call themselves a feminist.

Then 'feminist' is a meaningless term, at best.

But I think you can actually monitor who can and can't call themselves a feminist, you just don't want to because it would be a 24/7 job given how many people say and do heinous shit in the name of 'feminism' while proudly wearing the label of 'feminist'. Personally, I would abandon and disavow a label if people kept "misusing" it and I was unable or unwilling to stop them.

i thought clowns were supposed to be funny tho

[–]RoryTate 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, it was an unacceptable act of violence, but after thinking on it a bit, I really worry that Will Smith is in danger of taking his own life at some point in the future, and that this initial expression of anger is just his first breaking point from the weight of all the abuse in his horrible marriage. I'm not surprised that someone as ignorant as Amy Schumer is misinterpreting what is likely pain and suffering in this manner, but what bothers me is that very few people are able or willing to see male expressions of anger – even anger that is justifiable, or at least comprehensible – as a normal reaction to distress and pain. Especially mental anguish like a loveless marriage.

[–]HeForeverBleeds 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Toxic masculinity" from a woman who admitted to and joked about taking advantage of a drunk man. She's one of the last people who should be judging others as toxic

Will Smith was in the wrong for hitting Chris Rock. But it's not about toxic masculinity and more about him wanting to regain favor with his wife who publicly shamed him as not being enough to make her happy, so she claims she had to go to her son's friend

Or if this was "toxic masculinity," it's an example of how women can perpetuate it too by shaming men who they don't deem as "man enough"

[–]the-first12 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s as much about toxic masculinity as it is black on black crime.

The fact is that he unsuspecting Mr. Rock was an easy target for the cucked, embarrassed and ashamed Mr. Smith. It’s a shame he can’t get his own house in order, let alone exhibit some self control. He emotionally is a two year old.

The best is how she denies being a joke thief.

Meanwhile, she bragged about how much she used to shoplift in Rolling Stone about 7 years ago.

RS: Well, doing some shoplifting may be typical. But it sounds like you did a bit more than that.

AS: Yes. I started just with my girlfriends—we would steal a bathing suit or some makeup or I don't know—and then I just got more serious about it. It became grand larceny when I was in college. I just discovered this department store where you could just take whatever and then return it for cash—no tags, no receipt, nothing. You know, thousands of dollars. It was exciting. It was the adrenaline—the actual act of getting away with it. It wasn't about the money, even though the money was nice. And I didn't feel bad about it—it was this huge corporation. You know, I never stole from people. I never stole from a little store.

RS: You've said you might have stolen about $100,000 worth of stuff overall.

AS: Sure. Yeah.

RS: That's…

AS: It's a lot. Yeah. I was stealing, like, age 14 to 21? I think I was arrested when I was 21. I got arrested stealing from Bloomingdale's with my sister—which I'd never stolen from before but Kim was like, "It's really easy," and then we found out it's the hardest place to shoplift from—and they kind of got it down to disturbing the peace, but if anybody dug into my record they would see that it was grand larceny.

RS: What was the punishment?

AS: Shit, what was it? Community service? A fine? I don't remember. But I just remember I was, "I don't want to go to jail." It felt really bad, being arrested. You have no say. And it was embarrassing. I was relieved because I got caught doing this other thing—had they caught me for the thing I'd been doing for years and years, I would probably have had to do time. So, relieved actually. But it sucked.

In my experience, a thief is someone who will steal - no matter what. It’s not like someone will only steal $100,000 worth of clothes… but would never ever dare to steal a joke.

Amy Schumer is a fat unfunny hog who likes to trash men because she doesn’t want anyone calling her on 10 years worth of cheap race jokes.

She also benefits from female privilege. She stole almost 40 minutes of jokes from other comics and tv shows - and she still works.

Dane Cook, meanwhile, swiped 3 jokes from Louis and it ended his entire career.

If she was a man, she’d have been kicked out of comedy a long time ago..

She doesn’t belong on TV. She belongs on a silver platter with an apple in her mouth.

Gender expectations for men are currently in a state of flux.

On one side, you've got people who are just traditionalists at heart when it comes to how men should behave. They still expect chivalry from men, but they may or may not apply traditional views to the policing of women's behaviour.

On the other side, you've got people who are honestly critical of harmful gender expectations faced by men as well as women. Many of those people (unfortunately) use unhelpful terms like Toxic Masculinity.

And then you've got people who think they're in the second group, but really are still stuck in the mindset of the first group when it comes to men. Those people are either ignorant or hypocrites.

Lastly, you've got despicable people like Amy Schumer who is the worst possible messenger for any of this.

[–]Darkwolf90 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There is? It's just far more complicated than what's being discussed which leads to your own absurd claim. Masculinity being the traits related to the average traits of a male, so its defined by average male traits but not exclusive to males, there is good and bad there. There's also the complication that more is not always better and in some context its good to be aggressive or protective but if your directing these behaviors according to your fondness of cookies, then we've got a problem.

[–]ih-shah-may-ehl 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some people are really dumb: there is no such thing as toxic masculinity.

Sure there is. Whenever men insist 'I do X just because I am the man' that's toxic masculinity. Any idea how many times people have mocked / pitied me because my wife drives the car when we go someplace?

Apparently, the fact that she gets car sick easily unless she is the one driving and the fact that I love reading in the car while being driven somewhere is not good enough reason for many people and because I am the man, I should be the one driving the car.

If you start the argument with such nonsense as 'toxic masculinity does not exist' then you devalue the actual argument there is to be had here.

[–]TheOnlyDijaini 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I disagree. Toxic masculinity does exist and causes MR movements harm on a continuous basis. BUT, Will Smith is a victim of his wife's toxic feminism. When he saw his wife's face, he wet himself and turned on Chris Rock to save face. Til then, he was smiling as much as anyone else in the room. Jada Pinkett is a faithless nutjob who justifies her actions with feminism and degrading men. Will is the simp who empowers her at his own expense.

Thank you for saying what so many other in this sub won't. Toxic masculinity DOES exist, and it harms both men and women. [–]NoLettuce7713 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

How tf is toxic masculinity a sexist and hateful term?

This has been discussed a number of times here and elsewhere.

Toxic Masculinity has a number of problems in mainstream discourse, including:

  • the Labelling Effect: it results in society associating masculinity in general with toxicity
  • an assumption of masculinity defined only as a social phenomenon: many people understand masculinity as synonymous with maleness, and even with innate traits
  • lack of gender balance: though it's sometimes claimed that toxic feminity is a thing, it is never discussed and has never exploded into the public discourse as TM has. This is, of course, not unintentional, because TM serves mainly as a blame word for men, not one of liberation. Consider how it was popularised. To help men with their mental health? To help men overcome misandry and pressures associated with their gender expectations? No, it was popularised with #metoo.

For these reasons and more, mental health campaigns for men have already been ditching the use of the term.

[–]Mythandros 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

The term implies that whatever toxicity exists is masculine. That is complete bullshit and simply another way for feminists to show their hatred of men.

Masculinity cannot be toxic, PEOPLE are toxic and it's not limited to men.

The term and its usage are complete misandry, nothing else.

It's a way for feminists to shame men.

[–]Jerezmo -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Toxic masculinity is a specified toxic behavior. It doesn’t mean that to be toxic you have to be masculine. And doesn’t mean only men can be toxic.

[–]Mythandros 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Then it shouldn't be called "toxic masculinity", should it?

It should be called "toxic behavior", putting "masculinity" in there is supremely sexist.

That is, using your definition. I disagree with your definition.

[–]Jerezmo 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

It’s a specified toxic behavior that’s rooted in a need to prove oneself to be masculine. Hence the name.

It also doesn’t always refer to actually being a toxic person. It also explains why men don’t talk about their feelings, hence higher suicide rates. In that case the masculine expectation of men is toxic, not the person.

[–]Mythandros 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s a specified toxic behavior that’s rooted in a need to prove oneself to be masculine. Hence the name.

See, this is bullshit right here. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with proving your masculinity. Only those incapable of understanding that use such sexist terms.

It also doesn’t always refer to actually being a toxic person. It also explains why men don’t talk about their feelings, hence higher suicide rates. In that case the masculine expectation of men is toxic, not the person.

It does no such thing. A slang, sexist term like that one doesn't "explain" anything. It exists solely to shame and minimize.

Your mental gymnastics aren't going to work on me.

It's pretty clear to me that you are one of those turd burglars I mentioned earlier and talking to you further is pointless. I'm going to stop wasting my time on you now, as it's obvious your brain has effectively been washed by feminists and feminism.

[–]Jerezmo0 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Or course You can prove your masculinity in a non-toxic way. That’s not what toxic masculine refers to. It’s not an attack on all masculinity.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

In that case the masculine expectation of men is toxic

If you place an adjective (toxic) in front of a noun (masculinity), the adjective refers to the noun.

If the problem is that societal expectations of men are toxic, it should have been called 'toxic expectations [of masculinity]'. Of course, they don't want to do that, because it would show that these toxic expectations come from women, such as Jada.

[–]NoLettuce77131 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Those feminists who appropriated and popularised the term were in such a high ivory tower that it didn't occur to them that most people don't automatically think "masculinity" refers to expectations.

They just wanted something snappy, but it turned into a perfect blame stick to use against men.

[–]Jerezmo1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I know that toxic refers to the masculinity. But if you specify a black bird, that doesn’t mean all birds are black. You’re referring to a bird that is black.

[–][deleted]1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I know that toxic refers to the masculinity

Apparently not, if you claim it also refers to expectations about masculinity.

[–]Jerezmo1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–][deleted]1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I'm not sure what triggered these unnecessary personal insults.

What's your argument for not using the correct language when such language is available?

[–]Jerezmo1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Because those are the only two reasons I can imagine for why it would be so difficult to accept that toxic masculinity exists.

[–][deleted]1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That makes no sense at all. I'm not even talking about whether it exists. I'm saying you shouldn't put the adjective 'toxic' in front of the noun 'masculinity', if masculinity itself isn't the thing that is toxic.

[–]Jerezmo1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It is tho. Just not always.

[–]NoLettuce77131 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Language isn't rational but social. Can you think of anything that overwhelmingly receives the adjective "toxic" that has not become widely considered to be toxic, or at least negatively viewed?

There are toxic work environments or toxic relationships, but we regularly talk about work environments without that adjective, as we do about relationships.

[+]KiddHusky -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Toxic masculinity is when a person (doesn't have to be a male) masculinizes themselves to a point that they believe if they do something even remotely femme, they are no longer 'manly', thus causing them to play out exaggerated stereotypes that can be harmful to themselves and others.

An example would be a man who never cries, in fear he wouldn't be seen as a man anymore if he did. This is harmful to himself, as he's bottling his emotions. He may also take his frustrations out on people around him.

Another example would be a woman that thinks she has to protect women in order to be truly masculine. She is constantly putting herself in harm's way for the sake of protecting her masculinity.

Toxic masculinity is not only harmful for others, but ourselves too.

[–]NoLettuce7713 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All of this stuff could be identified as unhealthy gender expectations on men, harmful ideas associated with maleness, or even as Performative Masculinity.

I agree that yes, saying that what he did was due to toxic masculinity is an incredibly stupid reading of it, and what toxic masculinity is, but not that toxic masculinity isn’t real. Everyone on this sub says that it’s a made up concept putting the blame on men and then make comments about unfair double standards or stereotypes. While yes, toxic masculinity saying men’s actions are innately harmful is complete bs, it is a fairly real concept in my eyes that most people here seem to grasp the core idea of: society’s standards and stereotypes of men can be harmful to men. It’s shown in how people agree here that we’re expected to be stoic and strong while people complain about men not being vulnerable. This is not exclusively the fault of men but often played off in that way to give the idea of toxic masculinity that I see here all the time. Toxic masculinity is just an idea of masculinity that can be harmful to men when forced upon them and set as standards to be a ‘real man’. The problem is when these ideas of masculinity are seen to be bad outright when people set these for themselves instead of forcing these expectations on others.

[–]TAPriceCTR -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And why my comment got downvoted. I understand their knee jerk reaction but it is still disappointing. I like to think MRAs predominantly thoughtful rather than emotional.

[–]NoLettuce7713 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I consider myself pretty thoughtful and I think TM and TF are both terrible pieces of vocabulary with major problems destined to make them divisive and misunderstood. Only one of them became mainstream, though.

[–]TAPriceCTR -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They are attributes overwhelmingly carried by one sex that are harmful to the actor and those around them. For example, very few women would use violence to defend their husbands from a words... and even fewer men would expect it, both are toxic. I make a point to use TF where appropriate to balance out the over use of TM but integrity requires I accept TM where appropriate. My favorite way to counter the TM narrative is to point out macho ma'am tranny savage and Zoe Tur threatening Ben Shapiro are both scales of toxic masculinity... feminists hate that.

[–]NoLettuce7713 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I accept that the phenomenon exists.

I just hate the term and I think it is the epitomy of counterproductivity from the point of view of positive social change. It is alienating the very men who most suffer from it, pitching them against everyone else and denying them appropriate vocabulary to assert their own liberation from gender expectations.

There is such a thing as toxic masculinity. Just like there’s toxic femininity. And their harmful worldviews actually overlap in some ways. And Will Smith’s actions are actually a perfect example of both. Advocating for men’s rights and issues does not mean we have to pretend like men do no wrong or turn a blind eye to men acting violently or wrongly because of their idea of what it means to “be a man”.
