some people feel the need to use 'bad' words to get the point across. It's not as frequent or as deliberately vulgar as you might think. Except for when it is (see below). Also, see the mod policies.

Every subreddit has their assholes who take their positions to the extreme. I navigate /r/mensrights with some acknowledgement that there's a bias towards men (and against women) here. It's true of every subreddit dedicated to a specific topic. /r/apple is, generally, biased towards apple products, /r/android is biased toward android stuff, /r/linux is fucking adamant about telling you how shitty anything non-linux is, and /r/womensrights (or whatever it's called) is, I'm sure, biased towards women.

All I do is see the extremist that clearly don't care about any other opinion that doesn't align with their own and ignore/downvote them. That includes people in this subreddit who are far too chauvinistic for their own good as well as /r/apple, /r/android, /r/linux fanboys, just to name a few.

These words (or any vulgarities) really undermine the strength of any logical argument or rational point to an impartial observer. For example, which point is objectively more convincing?:

A. "We can't let these feminist cunts get away with redefining rape while simultaneously retaining the old stigmas associated with its older meaning."

or

B. "It is important to combat the disturbing trend in feminism in which they attempt to redefine rape while simultaneously retaining old stigmas associated with its older meaning."

It's much easier to ignore A's argument and call him a misogynist just because of his use of "cunt."

These words (or any vulgarities) really undermine the strength of any logical argument or rational point to an impartial observer

that depends hugely upon the audience, as you have said. /mensrights is not for everybody. It is not intended to please everybody.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not pleasing everybody is one thing. Repelling people who might otherwise support you is another.

I would turn the question around and ask is there any positive value for men's rights in using these terms? Does calling anyone a bitch or a cunt advance our agenda? If not, then we can do without these words.

[–]RedBarclay 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

/mensrights is not for everybody

No, it's for everybody who wants to stand up for men.

Putting down one sex doesn't exactly raise the other. They're just words used to make you feel better and others feel worse, almost like they're shielding the insecurities of your own opinion. If anything, it makes your argument more emotionally charged when it contains those words, a stronger argument wouldn't require smear tactics such as those.

Your argument is stronger without that language, zihuatanejo is right.

[–]plumeria 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

To turn mens rights into a boys club is both stupid and ineffective.

In order to have equality, both sides must want it. Deep down we are all fairly empathetic human beings, and if you appeal to only those who agree with you, and viciously attack those not in your own small group, you are dooming your cause with your own pride.

[–]kloo2yoo[S] -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

People who want to elevate likability over ideals can have it somewhere else, such as /r/politically_correct.

[–]plumeria 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It isn't about likability. You do not win a war by throwing mud and taunting the other side like a small child. You use reason, logic, and appeal to everyones innate need to progress as a society.

[–]kloo2yoo[S] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You do not win a war by throwing mud and taunting the other side like a small child.

[–]plumeria 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

they win by getting girls frustrated with their living situations, and get them so riled up that they become radical... just like tea partiers.

Free speech is free speech. However, I think using these words that are especially offensive to women can hurt our causes.

[–]weclock 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Using the words in an offensive sense is what's wrong. There's nothing wrong with the words "cunt" or "bitch," they just need to be used with the proper context. I, as well as some females apparently, find the word "cunt" to be exciting.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Can you enlighten me as to the proper usage of the words?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Talking dirty, as in "Are you ready to have your cunt fucked like a little bitch?"

Personally, I don't have a problem with them in any context.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was referring more to the OP but those are some good uses of those words :)

[–]weclock 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Knucker3 pretty much nailed it. If your bedroom talk doesn't allow for dirty talk, then I suppose you've got no reason to say it. And it works both ways, as a man who enjoys being pegged, I like being called a dirty bitch who's going to be fucked in his boycunt.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

/mensrights is an existential threat to feminism. There is no possible way to get the approval of feminists without kowtowing to feminism.

the good men project eta: and the 'conscious men' project exist for vagina worshipers. this reddit does not.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 15 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

The point I was trying to make is not to be so called white knights and vagina worshipers. The point I was trying to make is that if you offend the women that may otherwise be inclined to our cause then you are hurting the cause itself. I think a lot of women, feminist and not, do not like being called bitches and cunts. Just like I don't like being called creep, douchebag, dead beat, etc, etc.

Believe it or not, there are women and feminists who support our cause and do not support the feminazi causes that we fight against. Calling them cunts and bitches or using those words makes us seem like assholes who don't care about their rights.

We have to win them to our side if we are to win this battle. Not antagonize them.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think a lot of women, feminist and not, do not like being called bitches and cunts. Just like I don't like being called creep, douchebag, dead beat, etc, etc.

Upvote on this. As a man I am definitely turned off by women who use disparaging and sexist terms to describe men. I see no reason to needlessly turn off women in that manner. There are a lot of women who see that men's rights has some valid issues, but are repulsed by that type of language.

[–]Hindu_Wardrobe 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You hit the nail on the damn head. I have not subbed to this reddit almost specifically because of the blatant name-calling and general dickery - and I mean that in a gender-neutral way, I promise, I just love the word 'dickery' - here. I know it's only a select, but very vocal, few who encourage this blabbery, but it does make the movement hard to take seriously.

[–]rantgrrl 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Er... but there are some women who appreciate being able to label women who are bitches and cunts, bitches and cunts.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Maybe. I've heard women call each other that in a playful manner and as an insult too. I think its a like black people calling each other nigger casually and negatively but if a white guy does it he comes off as being racist in most contexts.

[–]plumeria 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hits the nail on the head.

Girls call each other that as a way of taking a word that causes harm, and making it feel harmless.

[–]kragshot 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Correction...we call each other "nigga," not "nigger." If and when we use "nigger," it is an insult.

Contextual example:

Positive: "Dennis Ferrer is my motherfuckin' *nigga** when he's throwin' down on the turntables!"*

Negative: "I swear, I hate Alan Keyes; that uncle-tom *nigger** pisses me the fuck off!"*

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

lol u serious?

Edit: Can I go up to black people now and go "Yooooo nigga what's up?" I've wanted to do that for so long.

I'm sorry, but not really.

Here, Veni...I'm linking this instructional video explained by celebrity and comedian, Chris Rock. This is part 1 and here's part 2.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Very entertaining thanks for the links. Telling white people what they can and can't say, so racist!!! ;)

[–]rantgrrl 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Men are also called cunts. There seems to be a new fashion in calling them bitches as well.

So, shall we discuss whether or not it's acceptable to call men: dick, prick or refer to mistakes as 'boners'?

[–]plumeria 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Notice how v. said "offensive to women" while you say "approval of feminists". "Woman" and "feminist" are not interchangeable, and to use those words as if they are means you're missing v's point.

On a slightly different tack, I think frequent use of words like 'bitch' and 'cunt' undermines topics such as this one. Either words are powerful, or they're not. Either we should examine the use of gendered insults (all gendered insults, not just the ones that aggravate us personally), or we should accept them and move on. 'Creep' is as much a gendered insult as 'bitch' is, and the way I see it either both are appropriate discourse, or neither are. I lean towards the latter, seeing as I don't see either of those words adding much to the conversation. "He's such creep" is not exactly enlightening, and neither is "what a crazy bitch".

[–]kloo2yoo[S] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

point taken. I'm not censoring people's language, though.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not suggesting you should. I'm just saying I don't think it's particularly good for conversation, but mostly when I see people posting strings of insults they're quickly down-voted. So, eh.

You need not appeal to extremist as they do not make up the majority of those with a vagina. The average plain jane can be persuaded to see your side of the story with a little explaining and appeals to the emotion.

[–]Thrug 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This argument doesn't hold water. If people are going to use presentation as an excuse to ignore your point, then they will do so regardless of how harsh your language is. If they can't make up their mind based on the content of the argument, then they aren't the sort of person we need to be convincing anyway.

[–]ghebert001 -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, because god forbid a woman should ever be offended.

[–]Spyder001 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm tired of Concern Trolling by people who want to exert their belief system on others by pretending to be a victims, misrepresentations of fact, and shaming tactics like this being used to fit constructive arguments in to some sort of pre-meditated structure that makes Feminists feel good.

Here in America discourse no matter how "rude" it got was always encouraged. Our forefathers made sure of that.

By telling people that there are "taboo" words, you only serve to prove your desire to control the thoughts of others.

[–]Ragnrok 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In all honesty it doesn't bother me because the vast majority of the time I see it used it's perfectly justified within the context of what the person is saying. I don't see many "all women are cunts" or "that stupid bitch didn't want to swallow", I mostly see "That woman won't let the father see his children? What a fucking cunt!", and statements of that ilk. I'm not saying this subreddit is free of unwarranted sexist statements, but I would call them the exception rather than the rule.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, I am not concerned about people using words. A word is only as offensive as you allow it to be. If you don't like being offended by a word, stop being offended by it. You have to consciously choose to be offended by something like this.

[–]kragshot 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While I don't condone the use of derogatory language, I have to bring up the point again that in many feminist spaces, they are encouraged to use derogatory language in reference to men and their "anger" and "wrath" is allowed as they have the right to express their feelings. In addition, men who enter these spaces are told that they have to accept being the subject of that anger and they should just take it as the "price" for being a man.

Men come here to vent and express their anger, but you see so many feminist supporters who want to curtail those feelings. Why can't feminists acknowledge that there are many issues that men are angry about and deserve a place to vent.

There are so many discussions that want to brand male feelings and ideals as toxic. Furthermore, more feminists are trying to co-opt our concerns and derail them to cater to feminist concerns (i.e. feminism is the answer to men's problems).

[–]ManThoughts 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They can't argue with us using facts, reason, or logic. So instead, they shame us as misogynists and freak out about the "hurtful words" we use. They don't want to consider our substantive points, and they don't want the world at large to consider our substantive points. So they turn on the emotional waterworks. While managing to ignore all the hostile and crude language Feminists use against men and MRA's.

It is a typical and expected tactic of tyrants.

Bitch cunt.

Yes, they are gendered words, and applied to women. But anyone who thinks that implies sexism or misogyny is a fucking idiot. If I call a guy a dick or an asshole, does that make me sexist or misandrist? Because those are gender specific insults too.

[–]Lachlan91 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This may only be tangentially relevant, but let me add my perspective as an Australian.

The word cunt is far more gender neutral here. Yeah, it can be used as a pretty offensive insult toward women, but far more often you'll hear it tossed around as an insult towards men, by men. It's also quite common among males to use it as a term of endearment. In this case, mostly in a blue-collar/working class environment, or younger more liberal types - you won't hear it in a white collar business environment.

You might call a woman a shriveled up cunt, and in that instance its only use is to offend, in a sexually charged manner with intent to imply females are inferior.

But when referring to a male, the term isn't nearly as sexually charged. It's not used to imply feminine traits, to imply that because a man displays traditionally feminine behaviour that they are inferior because of it (like you would with the insult pussy or faggot). Instead, to call a man a cunt, in the insulting sense, is simply to imply they are being a dickhead or an arsehole. Or in more gender neutral terms, they are acting in a selfish, antisocial manner. But there's rarely any sexism implied - it's simply a method of strongly expressing that an individual is acting in a socially unacceptable manner.

As for a term of endearment, you might be called a sick cunt or a mad cunt. This means that you are 'cool'. In this use the term has lost any of its gender based meaning, though you'll only hear it used in friendly banter between males. It's a bit of a peculiarity amongst us. I think it stems from a lot of our humour being based of trying to insult each other in a playful manner. If your friends ridicule you for doing stupid shit, it's probably because they like you.

I don't know how relevant this is, but it's an interesting bit of culture.

[–]Chamoflage 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And in Scotland it's a placeholder term for half the dictionary.

Assholes are like opinions...everybody's got one! I agree, if we can take being called a dick, women shouldn't get their panties in a bunch every time they hear the word cunt or bitch.

[–]weclock 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Anyone can have an asshole, it takes a woman to have a cunt and a man to have a dick.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The insult "asshole" is not applied to women.

[–]weclock 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Perhaps that's an area based thing, because I've seen it used, and used it, for women time and again.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've honestly never seen anyone call a woman an asshole.

Anyway, point stands.

And the male-version of 'slut':

Just say'n

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How dare you imply that the people in the forum aren't foaming-at-the-mouth extremists, and that our sweet, innocent women and feminists over at TXC are equally, if not more offensive!!!

Good day sir! I hope to see you soon for tea!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree with this 100000000%

I took a sociology of gender class in University and my professor asked the class if anyone could think of a male version of 'slut'. I suggested 'creepy', and was promptly ignored every time I brought it up.

[–]A_Nihilist -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

sociology of gender class

This was your first mistake.

[–]thechort -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Two wrongs don't make a right. Just say'n.

[–]skooma714 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bitch can be used as a gender-neutral verb. People in the UK and Australia are fond of the word cunt and use it to describe men far more often than women.

[–]CanadianTomFoolery 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not concerned with it at all.If someone chooses to take a remark personally and out of context It's not particularly my fault is it?.People are over sensitive, particularly women because their emotions guide and dictate their behaviour, so while sure a woman might take a broad remark personally, no I'm not overly concerned nor in the slightest bit worried about it.

[–]weclock 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I love a tasty cunt.

[–]FearlessBuffalo 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

These are just words. Only a fool would focus on such a stupid detail. Look at what he's actually saying, not what surrounds it.

[–]TBcasualty 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's nice to vent sometimes. If we can't do it here, we can't do it anywhere.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it is used a bit too much, but I don't think it is so frequently misused to be considered a serious problem (yet)

[–]koonat 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm no more concerned about it than I am every use of the words faggot or nigger.

It's fucking words, yo.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Judging from the downvotes it seems that everyone in this thread thinks we should stop using these words. I propose three possible explanations:

a) This is a disproportionate sample of the larger r/MensRights community,

b) r/MensRights doesn't like these words and therefore this can't be that big of a problem anyways, or;

c) You're a bunch of fucking hypocrites. And cunts. Hypocrites and cunts.

I am not about to start censoring myself to please feminists.

[–]windynights -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A lot of women are bitches but fewer are cunts. But both terms have successfully entered the lexicon. Employ them as you please.

[–]KronktheKronk -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Oh stop being such a prudish bitch

[–]kloo2yoo[S] 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

uh, did you see me say, 'don't use these words'?

[–]KronktheKronk -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Does it fucking matter?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, it kind of does. He was asking r/MensRights what we thought, not telling us we couldn't do it.

Does asking a question make one a prudish bitch?

[–]KronktheKronk -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the posing of the question implies a stance in favor of the affirmative. If the frequency with which people use strong words is concerning,

Then yes, asking the question makes you a prudish bitch.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men are held to an impossible standard. Stand up for ourself and we're oppressive.

[–]disposable_human -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some bitch got a hair across her cunt. It's no reason to start treating adults like tit sucking children. Where's your reverence for the English fucking language? It's so cunt-swellingly diverse and filled with words, for every feeling and subtle meaning you can find a word to suit you. Like a fucking painter's palette. Language doesn't have to defend itself from you, bitch. There's a place for 'bitch' and 'cunt' as long as there are thoughts and feelings that correspond to them.

[–]TicTokCroc -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It doesn't help that the MR mods shadow-ban comments that don't fall in line with their propaganda: Proof

[–]kloo2yoo[S] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

idk why that comment was removed. it's approved now.

[–]TicTokCroc -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, they must have just unbanned it. That's why I included the original screencap.

[–]kloo2yoo[S] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I just unbanned it.

As for a reason, I still don't know, but having dedicated troll accounts might have something to do with it.

"Even better than this, under one of my troll accounts I got banned and when I asked the mod why he was banning me for expressing a dissenting opinion he said "Because you're a cunt." When I pointed out that I was a male he responded that I was now a "lying cunt".

Again, idk the details, but yeah, if someone is going to deliberately antagonize a mod into trying to shjurt them up. then they shouldn't be too surprised if they succeed.

The idea that using offensive words can hurt our cause is entirely misleading. The case is actually the opposite. We gather here to oppose all the tactics used to impose a misandrist agenda. We cannot do that if we ignore political correctness. I assert that we should use words like cunt and bitch, and we should defend the idea that those words are correct in those contexts.

The idea that we should not use these words because they are 'offensive' is just another part of feminist/white knight culture. I oppose that culture, and I oppose their suggestion that I shouldn't use perfectly good words because they might be 'offensive'.

tl;dr: Cunt Bitch Slut Whore

[+]disposable_human -12 points-11 points-10 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If someone made a subreddit trying to fight the influence of political correctness, I might spend all of my time there every day.

[+]disposable_human -8 points-7 points-6 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I can see from the fast and universal downvotes I've earned, it would be time well spent.

[+][deleted] -7 points-6 points-5 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

We appear to be in the minority.

[–]leftyscissors -4 points-3 points-2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

downvoted because I agree with you two.
