A patriarchy is a system where men have power of rule and where women are excluded.

That’s not any western system. In the U.S. women can run for public office. Women not only have equal voting rights but carry the majority vote. Feminists have an incredibly strong lobby having won many pieces of legislation favoring women. Women aren’t excluded and to the contrary have incredible influence.

We don’t live in a patriarchy which also means any argument based on patriarchy theory is an argument based on a false premise.

Its all just a way to dismiss and enable bad behavior.

Everything has been twisted into an attack on women to where everyone looks at everything as an attack on women.

I was in a sub where someone asked about makeup at the gym and this woman worded her response like she went to the gym after work and kept it on so she didn't have to reapply. I wasn't sure I took it the right way so I asked, "You don't take it off so you don't have to reapply it or did I misunderstand. If you keep it on so you have it on to go out after the gym do you shower or what is your routine."

Just being genuinely curious. And people destroyed me for it.

I was in the military and every day this woman would stand by the door and sneak put before getting a work assignment. One day I said, "Watch Smith. I bet she sneaks out around 58 after." And everyone around told me to stfu.and why do you care so much. Like I was just having a laugh that she got away with it every day and noone said or saw anything.

Feminists look at the 0.1% of men who are at the peak of the piramid in terms of status and think that that's a typical man's experience. They don't consider the fact that an average man lives a much more difficult life than an average woman, which is why homelessness and suicide are overwhelmingly male-specific problems.

A woman will almost always find somebody who will help her in a pinch. Men can only rely on themselves and should something go wrong, society turns its back on them in a heartbeat.

This guy hits the nail on the head. Women see all of these places where men are the majority and they can't understand and accept that it's because the men are more self motivated, working harder, and so on. So they blame it on the so called patriarchy.

The patriarchy doesn’t exist. Women now have equality in every area of human endeavour in Western democratic societies. They have had the vote for 100 years. They have equality in government, politics, law, education, jobs and careers. Literally equality with men everywhere you look. The patriarchy is a feminist construct to blame men for their failure to achieve anything comparable to mens achievements. Where are the female equivalents of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak of Apple or Jeff Bezos of Amazon or Bill Gates of Microsoft or Zuckerberg of Facebook or Larry Page of Google. Where is a female Elon Musk. Despite their equality feminists have achieved nothing on this scale. No wonder they want to blame a non existent patriarchy for their failures. When I fail I blame myself and look for where I went wrong and make sure I do better next time. As do most men. About time feminists did the same.

A patriarchy is a system in which your identity is defined by your father. Why would you want that? Here's why:

A dog with too many owners starves to death.

If someone is incapable of surviving on their own, such as a baby, you need to make it so one specific person has the moral obligation of taking care of that someone.

The best people for that are family.

So the parents take care of the baby. What if they die?

Well, the baby might have older siblings. What if they don't?

Grandparents. That's the thing. But wait... the baby has two sets of grandparents. If we don't choose one, they will push the responsibility into each other, and the baby will die.

In a patriarchy, it's always the parents of the baby's father, followed by his brothers, and so on...

In a Matriarchy, it's the other way around.

So that means only those people are considered the baby's " family." For this reason, they all have the same last name.

Alright, but how about widows?

If you are married to someone and that person dies, and your children are in their family, not yours, do you just abandon your kids? No, that's ridiculous. Do you raise them on your own? Good luck with that.

You need to make your spouse's family into your family. So, in a patriarchy, the wife takes the husband's last name and vice-versa.

Also, only the gender that gets the responsibility gets to have a harem because you don't want to split siblings apart.

Of course, that means you are more responsible for your sister-in-law than you are for your married sister.

Do we live in a patriarchy, today, in the west? I don't think so. Men are praised ( at least, not as bashed as women) for being absent fathers, and the guys who want custody over their own children are treated like lunatics.

A man who wants to raise his own kids is the most patriarchal you get, and courts despise that.

Most people, men or women, try to live independently of family and rely on the government to help take care of their kids. No one can afford a house, yet people insist on moving out as soon as they get their first job.

This is a govermentiarchy.

If we're talking about western society, patriarchy is long gone in my opinion. Feminists will still complain about it because they are for the majority of part people with victim mentality who blame men for every single thing, want equality without responsibility, live in their own bubble and refuse to look at the other side. Obviously not all are like this, but most modern radical feminists are. I actually used to be a supporter of this movement years back, but now I want to puke when I look at them.

Only place I see patriarchy by both execution and name is the church, but the church is a private community of every country therefore it has it's own laws, if you don't like the church then don't take part in it. This is what I have to tell every mad feminist when they're talking about why can't women become priests.

Patriarchal social relations exist, even in the USA where plenty of marriages are still done on patriarchal lines. But "the patriarchy" as this nebulous concept has not and can not ever exist. Feminists muddle the distinction between these two things.

Even if we were to argue that a country/society can qualify for the characterization of being "a patriarchy" as a whole if certain requisite criteria like enough enforced patriarchal social relations are present, the USA wouldn't qualify, but by this definition, a country like India could.

Because it's women who are mostly raising children, thus raising boys into men.

It's women who are teaching children in schools seeing as around 85% of teacher are women.

It's women who treat the men when they're sick, that's 70% of women (UK stat).

The beauty and fashion industry is dominated by women thus putting the standard of beauty of women by women.

If men are dominating society then it's women who are allowing it. Which creates a circular argument ... if women are behind the patriarchy then it's a matriarchy.

I think patriarchy did exist at some time. I do not believe it exists now. Any power men have is tied to having to support others and therefore being in a position of some control. I had a cat and while it was technically my pet I mostly served the cat. I went to work, the cat stayed home and broke stuff. I would come home cleanup, feed, pet. Yes I was in control but I would rather be the cat in this scenario.

Like all this stuff, it probably does at certain times for certain people in certain situations.

It only takes one crap situation, one unpleasant encounter, one memorable incident to radicalise some people. People take advantage of the situation they're in and both men and women do that.

The difference in my experience is that men taking advantage of their situation is seen as bad, whereas women taking advantage of their situation is seen as good, even though both are about as close to objectively bad as you can get in terms of human morality.

In short, women get away with it; men don't, and that's really the problem. Not that either group is particularly more likely to be unpleasant.

No, but it should. Not in the way feminists say it exists, the stupid “it means men run everything and are bad” way, but in what the word actually means, rule by fathers, such that good leaders are expected to be also good fathers and that the majority of appointed and elected officials also are good fathers. It would mean the government would be run by people with both a solid stake in a better future and some experience in guiding people right and making wise decisions, something sorely lacking when government is run as a soulless bureaucracy and a corrupt and inefficient business.
