Apparently the speakers were chosen "blind", i.e. the proposed topics were put to a panel without any details about who the speaker was who'd be presenting that topic. That way the panel was able to choose the speakers for the event without knowing their names, sex, race, sexual orientation or anything else about them. They were choosing purely on the topics the speakers wanted to present.

Result: a whole lot of fucking white males!

Obviously that's unacceptable, so naturally they had to cancel the conference rather than host a lineup of speakers chosen purely on merit. ^/s

Forced diversity, in other words choosing people specifically because they're not male rather than because of their skills, interest in the topic, etc.

And somehow this is supposed to fight against sexism; rejecting speakers because they're male is against sexism in the minds of feminists

Github should have stood strong and explained their selection process. As is it, I have no respect for how they handled this situation

He's a full-on Kool Aid-drinking feminist, who's angry that MRAs are standing up for him in this situation. It's hilarious, but also kinda sad.

This kind of crap is exactly why people are sick of hearing about "diversity" and "Affirmative Action".

Here we have a group of people who were chosen to speak purely on merit (equality of opportunity), without reviewers having any idea of their race or gender. When the end result reflects an all-male group (again, chosen on merit), the conference is postponed in order to force more diversity (equality of outcome).

I'm a white male in STEM, and this shit pisses me off. I might as well just phone it in every day, because my work can be discounted due to my skin color and gender.

I currently give technology classes at my workplace about Javascript and HTML including how to create your first web page and why Apache is a problematic name for a web server in the 21st century.

Also, for anyone who's interested, check out Justin Reynard's Twitter. He totally supports the reasoning for the conference being canceled and is actively insulting MRA's and anyone else who's trying to defend his previous spot at the conference.

Who wants to bet he gets a spot in the next conference, but with a much more diverse angle?

This is the same company that adopted a code of conduct that excludes "privileged" people from the protection against discrimination and harassment. See https://github.com/blog/2039-adopting-the-open-code-of-conduct. I've considered them boycott-worthy since they did so, and this is just one more mark against them.

This is happening in my field, these attempts to get around 50/50 splits at conferences. It's usually like "here's some men with radical new concepts," then "here's a girl who does production work on an existing tool," and the thing is they're not idiots — it must be depressing having to get up and pretend to be "equals" when in fact the real speakers, the men, are flying their spaceships around your wooden canoe.

I prefer Bitbucket... they have unlimited free private repos. And free teams (up to 5). SourceTree is by far the best Git/Mercurial front end I've used too.

Here is the selection method:

Submissions will be initially blind reviewed by a panel of GitHub employees from a range of departments and backgrounds. Speaker information will be used in any final reviews necessary to break ties and bring a balance to the speaking line-up.[1]

(Funny aside, but the photo on the conference promotion page shows a crowd with the camera focused in on two women.)

So the only time gender would even be known to the selectors would be in case of a tie, in which case it would presumably be resolved in favor of the woman to "bring a balance to the speaking line-up."

But apparently thats not good enough for feminists, and it is a shame to see github cuck to them.
