I've never understood that either. I occasionally heard "boys will be boys" growing up, but about things like boys breaking things or getting themselves hurt roughhousing or other such trivial things. I hear feminists complain about it being used to marginalize rape, but I've never actually heard anyone use it to marginalize rape. I'm sure some person has at some point, but "guys are just going to rape people, so it's no big deal" is certainly not an opinion held by the general public

Either way, the phrase "boys will be boys" however it's used demonstrates a pretty narrow view of males: they're all violent, messy brutes; they're all rapists; etc. It's a dumb thing to say. But to say that it has to do with a "rape culture" seems like an unfounded assertion by whoever wrote that

Yes, "boys will be boys" is used to ignore boys rough housing or boys abusing other boys. Not even sure of I've ever heard it used in my life, but "Never hit a girl" is definitely more prevalent.

When I was being brought up around a bunch of feminists, they used to have an expression, 'toys for the boys', that was intended to convey that nuclear weapons were created as kind of a plaything for men. I remember seeing a sticker with an infant playing with toy-sized nuclear missiles with that phrase as a caption. This was in the 1980s, and we were all pretty terrified of nuclear war, especially living quite close to some strategic 'attack sites' (an RAF base and nuclear power station), so I think the phrase and sticker had quite a big impression on me.

I just did a little Google right now, and it seems this concept is still in circulation.

"We need to combat rape culture!" If you think about what culture is in this context, it means widely practiced and accepted. Rape is a crime, it is not widely accepted as being ok, the majority of men do not wish to rape and nobody thinks rape is a normal every day thing.

Not only have I heard the "boys will be boys" phrase used more than once to explain away the misbehavior of boys (and I worked with kids for six summers so I should have heard it a lot). but it was done to excuse a couple of boys fighting. Boys fighting is boys being boys. Nobody sees a boy try to penetrate a girl against her will and say "ah, youth. Boys will be boys!" These people are fucking nuts; when there isn't actual evidence of rape or rape culture, they misuse a relatively rare phrase to "prove" rape culture.

in Finland the Green Party, which is very feminist and quite big, published a report on the problems boys have in schools.

It was, of course, pure bullshit from start to end, not acknowledging how big the problem is and what are the real and academically studied reasons behind it.

One of the frustrating claims was that boys do so much worse than girls is that the are too privileged. In other words teacher think that boys will be boys and don't demand them to work as hard as they demand the girls to work.

There was no source for the claim. It was probably just one of those Feminist facts. But it seems to be in the air, perhaps there has been a new collection of lies circulating in their secret newsletters or something.

Actually, in India, this is a common (and hated) response to justify rape, because girls shouldn't wear provoking clothes and if they do, "boys will be boys" and there's nothing you can do to stop that. Pretty fucked up.

Here in Australia there have been courts that have decided that muslims didn't understand the culture and therefore got lighter sentences for rape. Boys will be boys should (by the writers logic) mean raping should be OK because it is a cultural norm. I can't support that because I think rape is never good.

"Boys will be boys" is a pass for young boys. The idea here is that it's okay for boys to breach consent barriers with girls because it's "just how they are." Obviously no one is physically raping anyone and using the expression. The problem is that conditioning boys and girls to accept this type of relationship can lead to complications with consent as they grow up. Teach a boy he doesn't need consent to do x y z to a girl and when he's older he extrapolates that into not needing consent for sex.

It really comes down to shitty parents who think "boys will be boys" is an acceptable excuse for their inability to teach their boy to respect girls.
