As a supervisor in an industrial workplace I absolutely have to "mansplain" for safety reasons. I'm very aware of the delicacies of supervising women who may feel I'm manspaining but I won't have somebody hurt on my watch, I don't care what they have between their legs. I will never put myself in a position where I'm alone with a woman in the workplace, I judge that to be too risky, but with younger new employees I feel I have no choice.

Women need to understand that their seniors have a responsibility to get the work done correctly and ensure people dont get hurt. They arent 'mansplaining' or anything, they just want to help u and/or keep u safe. Also if u think whatever that person is explaining to u u just know about that stuff then a polite 'Yeah I know about that, thnx for ur help tho' would suffice.

Or some internal Karen shit. 100% of time I explain anything to a colleague( regardless of sex) I have no idea if they know, I am just explaining what I know and I expect them to do the same. If they no more that’s great share it. If you already know what I am sharing you can stop me anytime and say oh I know that I have X experience/ knowledge etc. I’ll say great, sorry I wasn’t sure or I didn’t know. No big fucking deal we can go back to working. I have never had this happen but I think if someone ever tells me to stop Mansplaining I am just going to say, please don’t assume my gender.

A (former) friend of mine went through the whole gender transformation bit and whatever, hormones and all of it but still pre-op. She/he/it/whatever got angry af when she asked ME for help with her car and said I was "mansplaining" as I was trying to help. I'm like "how the fuck am I mansplaining (which isn't even a thing) when you're in the middle of trying to be a man?"

Unsurprisingly she screamed GASLIGHTING so I told her to go to a shop since maybe they can "mansplain" better than I.

By the definition of this chart, I do a lot of mansplaining to new hires, irrespective of previous experience level.

I think it's common courtesy to verbalize what I am doing when working together with others, so they don't have to ask everything, and also spell things out better so I share the vocabulary, my mental model etc.

I feel like the intent behind the engineering tradition of sharing knowledge and trying to reason together is being questioned.

It's not about putting people down, it's about everyone verbalizing and sharing their reasoning with the others in order to get to the best solution.

You are expected to produce facts and logic and present them to the group. You should distance yourself from the facts you produce and be prepared to accept other better solutions if presented with convincing facts.

Those engineering virtues, which are supposed to be completely unselfish, are being misinterpreted as boasting.

The chart is useless. I used to teach courses for adults and I thought I was good at it until I realised a hard lesson. Don't assume anything based on a persons background or what they say. Just look at their actions instead.

I would constantly ask my students if they understood what I had just explained. Some people will naturally ask if they don't understand something without being prompted. They are the ones that lull you in the false confidence that you're doing a good job.

Others however would just nod that they did understand while in reality, they were still struggling with their exercises.

That's when I effectively learnt that simply asking is not enough, I actually had to individually check each student on how they were carrying on with their exercises to verify if they really understood what they were doing.

Anyone following the above chart is discriminating people who are likely afraid to speak up for themselves.

The second flaw in this chart is assuming knowledge is accumalitive. I would say I am an expert in my field with decades of experience but my knowledge still has plenty of holes in it and I am constantly learning new things from people with less experience than me or are involved in completely unrelated fields.

Anyone who wishes to be treated according to this chart is effectively sabotaging their own growth.

I assume all hires are equally stupid; I teach everyone equally. Years ago an young lady didn't like that I was educating her in a public setting, which I also do for the benefit of everyone. She had a sit down with her line manager afterwards where she tried to accuse me of mansplaining and belittling her competence.

Her manager was a female, so she thought she would get sympathy and put me in hot water. The problem is that I have a reputation for both expertise on this topic and as someone who educates whenever possible, regardless of who is the target. This manager told me she looked at this girl in the face and said that if I was teaching her something that she would do well to be quiet and listen. But more importantly, that if I identified an area where I thought she was deficient in the future, this manager would be happy to set up a system where I report these deficiencies to her manager instead of trying to fix them. Apparently she became more comfortable with being taught real quick.

Moral of the story is to be consistent. Guys and girls both have ego issues or problems of pride. There is no room for that kind of BS in the STEM industry, so be even in how you teach and the management system should support you, assuming you have a decent employer.

Let it happen, it's the world they want. No stopping to help, no deference, no 'benevolence' whatsoever. Let them experience the world the way men do. Why are so many men so keen to prostrate themselves for people who wouldn't even piss on you if you were on fire?

If you're a man and experience any difficulty from minor to monumental no one cares or stops to help, or offers assistance, or gives benefit of the doubt if you're having a difficult time. A woman with a minor set back will have people falling over themselves, bending over backwards to assist, even when they act a cunt its excused.

If you absolutely have to due to employment, make sure you have someone else present. Have meetings booked in the calendar - formalise it. Some of you will laugh at that, but good luck to you when you have an informal chat, or after hours, or closed door mentor session, because if "she says" and you catch an accusation of a any impropriety, your say counts for nothing.

I think the tone is important; once someone detects condensation, they shut down and consider it 'mansplaining.'

People generally can pickup on intent, though, so if you're coming from a good place, it doesn't usually come across negatively. However, you can't please everyone.

It seems to be that if you take away the gender bias here. The real issiue is how people react to being told what they already know. It they react logically or emotionally this isnt a man woman issue. Its a emotional intelligence issiue that effects both sexs. Under some instances of safety and rigour there is no room for an emotional responce the concequences are too extreme to allow miscommunication such as in a industrial setting. In other cases a more measured method of education might be best based upon the individuals personal experiance and allow some room for failer as a necessity to not offend. Good mentoring shouldn't need specific rules for men or women. Both can make stupid mistakes and be overqualified. Both can be easily offended or reassured.

Due to the nature of my job, I have to train new employees on our applications. Rather than deal with people one on one, I recorded thorough video trainings. I'm available for questions if necessary, but so far no one has come by. I try to limit my interactions at work with anyone- always professional, cordial and responsive if a request is made. Beyond that, I'm a ghost.

If someone specifically asked me, "Do I need to explain this to you?" I would wonder whether they were insinuating that I should already know the information and am therefore stupid if I say "yes, please explain." I'm pretty sure that the woman who made that chart would feel the same if someone asked that, so you just can't win with her type. When is the sharing of information ever bad? Even if I already know something, it's useful to get a fresh take on it. If I already know the information, I share what I know and then, depending on the circumstances, it becomes an exchange of ideas or confirmation that I am correct. Women who call this "mansplaining" must be very insecure and possibly have no ideas or thoughts to share.

Feminists did not mean by that men explaining "things" to woman "as if women can't understand" but men explaining on behalf of women what's good for women. If you feel the need to explain something without prompt to a guy or girl, you're probably just an asshole either way. Like, in no profession that I have been a part of have I welcomed someone explaining simple things to me without a prompt. So, I feel there needs to be some. Basic communication education before even getting to this chart.
