I'm software developer who fascinating how corporations solve women shortage in this field. They literally give all management position to business oriented women and then complain how hard for them to lead all men.

I have to explain why I need to go to conference to a woman with zero tech background. All tech tasks neglected by them, because they are care only about business side and maintenance is something unimportant for them.

But still women have extreme advantage in hiring. I really wish I could label myself as minority to gain just a bit of this advantage.

Every year they remove those subjects from STEM counting in which women dominate to readjust the victim complex narrative. This is why even though women are 2/3rd the majority in colleges, they are still able to say that women are not in STEM. This corruption gives them gender quota, free scholarships and research funding. Because of this men with good academic performance are not able to get admissions in their desired universities.

It seems like every other week there’s a new acronym to get our heads around.

But whilst some come and go, ‘STEM’ seems to be the mother of all acronyms, that has become a household name.

Science, technology, engineering, maths – aka “STEM”.

These are the (few remaining) subjects where women are underrepresented in education.

It is an acronym that has given us wonderfully cliche images of young women in white coats high fiving, or others peering into microscopes with a big smiles and thumbs up.

But whilst the artwork is humorous, the numbers don’t quite make sense.

As what people don’t know about ‘STEM’, is that it is just yet another politically motivated term, that has manipulated the data to give us misleading perspectives.

Because actually 54% of STEM students are women, not 35%.

And we can only arrive at 35% by ignoring the many, many, sciences where women continue to dominate.

Biology, psychology, neuroscience, medicine, veterinary science…

These are all sciences… all areas where women dominate… and none of them are considered STEM subjects.

Yes. Biology. Not a science. Somehow.

Meanwhile the epidemic of men and boys falling behind and dropping out of education remains ignored.

Yup, the crisis of educational attainment continues to look in the wrong direction.

So what is to be said about STEM?

And can we drop the acronyms and political neologisms, and look at the whole picture?

Its lying is what all this is. ALL degree depts in universities qre filled with white, middle class women from private schools. They are not a minority, they're a majority.

Feminists want icky males to not be allowed to outnumber female students in any area of academia while at the same time want to hold the female dominated areas in place. That is clearly a deceptive position they hold and is there for everyone to see.

Love this post so much.

As a STEM major at a private university that prides itself on research, I never could believe that women were underrepresented. I attended large lectures with upwards of 500 students, and most of them were women. Most of my study buddies were women. I have even found myself being the only guy in many recitations. Now this shows that not only was I not crazy in doubting the stats, the stats have been manipulated themselves! They are literally changing the narrative to diminish men’s struggles. They are the exact people they condemn!

Side note, you know they’re reaching with some of these things when BIOLOGY is not considered a part of STEM in their study. Also, it’s often joked that psychology is not even a science (which I call BS on), so knowing it’s heavily predominantly women, I can toss it in those people’s face that they diminish the role of women in that field. Throw the idpol back at them, to say the least.

It's pretty funny calling psychology "STEM". That's where you go to get easy A's (and your classes are suddenly filled with women), along with sociology, anthropology, etc.

I always thought that this was a funny misconception. Because I never knew many girls who liked/were good at math. And then everyone acts all surprised when there aren’t as many of them in physics/math/engineering. Like there may be a cultural boys club factor but to say that’s the only thing that matters is ignorant.

As a stem student, this is interesting. So far my undergrad classes have been fairly evenly split between genders. Except for my calculus classes, they’ve been mostly men

You did the math wrong. How did you find 35% women in the data? I added up the numbers from 2021/22 (which has the 701,460/594,385 f:m ratio that you showed) for those four areas and the total number of males is 341150 and 122005 for females. 463155 total (except "others") and that is 26.34% female.

Your main point still stands, but not the recreation of the incorrect headline.

Edit: I added "Biological and sport sciences" and "Architecture, building and planning" to the sum. Those two are also male "dominated".

(I'm surprised about the biological science being over 50%. I think sports science being bundled together is the culprit.)

With those two categories and the four on the image I got 31.77% women in STEM. Just like you said, it really is only taking into account the fields that are left to be dominated and painting those over the whole picture, but there is still something else in there missing to find 35%...

I could say actual surgeons are STEM but something like nursing staff isn't STEM at all. I don't support passive feminist stance on STEM, they are virtue signalling on that there are no women in STEM, but then continue with gender studies degrees.

Yes, there are no women in STEM, but feminism is again not the solution.

Although I'm generally in favor of Men's Rights, your's is just a bad argument, because you are arguing semantics.

When people think of STEM they 100% think of the exact sciences, like maths, physics, engineering, computing, etc. And those are exactly the ones where men dominate. While it's definitely true that women dominate in other areas, most notably medicine and adjacent fields, those are not considered STEM for most people. Your argument only works by using a specific, non usual, definition of STEM.

I was in Big Tech for decades, as a hard-core system-level software engineer. I designed complex software systems and wrote metric tons of code.

There were plenty of women around during those decades. But mostly not in the role I described. They were instead mostly in less technical roles. Yes there were exceptions to this rule but they were rare. (The women I did work with were universally qualified and just as proficient at their jobs as the men.)

Trying to increase female representation in deeply technical roles was chasing unicorns; there aren’t enough qualified women to go around. The only explanation ever offered for this state of affairs was “sexism”. Even considering the mere possibility of other factors was utterly taboo, and genuinely career-ending.

Based on my experience I agree with the other commenters calling this “STEM” label a ruse, something made up, to rally around, to justify the unicorn hunt and deflect away from certain hard conversations that dare not be had, e.g. males and females are different in some ways, and that don’t make men bad.

Exactly. They want a female majority (at least) in all subjects. If that weren’t the case they’d put at least as much attention to boosting men in education, veterinary science, clinical psychology, medicine etc. The fact that they don’t shows it’s solely about boosting women, not equality at all.

It ALSO proves that the “positive discrimination” imposed in employment and promotion is going to be entrenched anti-male discrimination, since education shows that it doesn’t stop once the proportion of women goes well over the so-called magical 50% mark.

I work in biotech and we have more women than men. Our statistics professor favoured women over men when sending them to another country for an Erasmus semester. Yet, there have been plenty of articles about how "we need more women in biotech". I see countless of colleagues on LinkedIn post about female empowerment in the biotech industry.
